The genius of season one and two is that we get a clear split between what is remembered and the tangible, “real” events playing out in the Dubai penthouse. Louis’ memories can be challenged by his interviewer. He can struggle with the archives. He can bicker with Armand in bed between recording sessions. When we see NOLA or Paris, we know we’re in Louis’ mind. We are constantly reminded of that. “Memory is a monster.”

In TVL, “the Failures” album overlayed with the documentary overlayed with scenes that are technically part of both is just… confusing? For me? It certainly isn’t as effective as iwtv. Like, is the Claudia seance as Lestat remembers it? Is what we’re seeing— such a powerful moment for Claudia’s ghost, for her rage— just Lestat trying to recount what he remembers her saying? Or did it “really happen” exactly like that?

The first few episodes do a better job imo of having Lestat narrate book-style about the scenes as they’re unfolding. I really, really wish this was consistent throughout the season. “The Failures” audio could be used as a constant reminder that what we’re seeing onscreen is Lestat’s memory of recent events— not the events themselves. In episode one, we have jumps in timelines and Lestat’s voiceover scrambling to piece his story together. It’s chaotic and SO different than the Dubai interview frame, but it honors the Vampire Lestat book in a really charming way. It keeps the “memory is a monster” theme alive and well. It milks the show’s brilliant friction between what we think we know about ourselves and what actually happened to us.

I’m holding out hope that the finale addresses some of this and centers “The Failures” project in a meaningful way. I hope the auction scene that launched the season is at the very least alluded to. I actually do have faith in these writers and their vision but there’s been a lot of odd, challenging choices made re: storytelling, and after six episodes it’s making me scratch my head.
