so it starts with Ronan having a hard time falling asleep

the last thing the narration states Ronan thinks about before he finally falls asleep is “the dark bags beneath Adam's eyes”

Ronan takes note of how Adam is doing sO often

then Ronan does fall asleep, and this short chapter is dedicated to the wildest religious-guilt-sex-type-dream i'm gonna go ahead and say Ever ✨

Adam was in the dream, too; he traced the tangled pattern of the ink with his finger. He said, "Scio quid hoc est." As he traced it farther and farther down on the bare skin of Ronan's back, Ronan himself disappeared entirely, and the tattoo got smaller and smaller. It was a Celtic knot the size of a wafer, and then Adam, who had become Kavinsky, said, "Scio quid estis vos." He put the tattoo in his mouth and swallowed it.

Ronan woke with a start, ashamed and euphoric.

The euphoria wore off long before the shame did.

He was never sleeping again.

there's so much going on and I'm not the most qualified person to unpack all this~

but like. we might not know entirely how Ronan feels about Adam up to this point but now we Know Ronan dreams about Adam tracing his tattoo 👀👀👀 (Manifesting~)

Ronan interweaves the idea Adam and K saying ‘I know what this is’ and ‘I know what you are’ Ronan wants someone out there to understand him especially while Ronan doesn't feel like he understands himself

K and Ronan are obviously very similar, K is a twisted reflection of Ronan’s worst aspects. K is distinctly in one of the best positions to understand Ronan, as one of the only other dreamers around, but K’s advice to Ronan in regard to dreaming is more of a set back than a help, and his influence makes Ronan feel lower as opposed to feeling truly understood

Adam and Ronan are in very early phases, but Ronan wants to be understood by Adam, specifically. Ronan dreams about trying to communicate with Adam. such a significant part of Ronan and Adam’s development is them coming to know one another, and feeling known. Ronan and Adam match well together, because they both have similar thornier aspects and they both have similar positive aspects as well. over time, they're able to help each other through learning about magic, and the things that magic acts as metaphors for, they learn about themselves and each other and are able to be good support systems for one another

I think one of the most significant themes in the books is how developing that sense of connection with other people is what makes the heavy stuff in life seem worthwhile

and in a way, this religious-guilt-sex-type-dream is kinda a warped funhouse mirror of what does actually end up happening for Ronan

one of thE First things Adam does after he and Ronan start making out for real is check out Ronan’s tattoo ✨ and Adam understands so much more about Ronan by that time.

here Ronan thinks “he was never sleeping again” because he feels ashamed of what he dreamed about, and down the line after he and Adam kiss he thinks “he was never sleeping again” because he feels so happy he doesn't need any dreams 🥹
