“Explain it to me again - why do we need to pretend to be married?” Selene asks as she tugs uncomfortably on the plunging neckline of her dress, gloved armlooped through Melanadahls.

“Because,”he explains for the third time that night “My extended family keepstrying to marry me off to strangers and I’m sick of it. I told them Iwas already married and your name just sort of…slipped out.”

“Sure,right,” she accepts “Not your boyfriends name, but mine. Smart.Why am I actually here though?”

“Becausethey didn’t believe me. Can you believe that? My own family thinksI’m a liar!”

“Notsure your fake-wife is the right person to give that complaint to,”She points out.

“…Fairenough.” Melanadahl pulls her slightly closer to him and offers hera large smile “Still, it’s not all bad, right? We never hang outjust the two of us anymore.”

“That’sbecause my boyfriend doesn’t trust you as far as he can throw you.”

“Rude.I’m not the one with the awful family.”

“Isn’tyour brother in jail for treason?”

“A)Whetheror not that is true is entirely unrelated to this conversation and B)How did you hear about that?”

“Ihave connections,” Is all the information Selene gives him.

Melanadahlraises a quirked eyebrow at her before deadpanning “It was thatnight we had the elfroot wasn’t it.”

“Youbawled for like three hours about how much you missed him. It wasadorable, really.”

Melanadahllets out a long groan in response before perking back up when one ofhis Aunts passes by.

“AuntArla!” He waves “Have you met my wife, Selene?”

Theolder woman sniffs, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose asshe wanders over. “Oh…She’s Dalish…” she observes,hand shrinking back from Selenes. “Where did you find her?”

Selenegrits her teeth while Melanadahl tells his rehearsed story about howthey fell in love between the bookshelves at work, and his Aunt Arlanods along with unsubtle glances at Selene’s vallaslin.

“Well…I’mhappy you’re happy,” She finally comments, before scurrying off tofind some other relative or member of the party to gossip aboutMelanadahls ‘wife’ with.

“Arethey all going to be like that?” Selene sighs, slipping her phoneout of her purse and sending Dirthamen a text. She really wishes shehad gone on the date with him, instead. But Melanadahl had pleadedand begged and coerced, and she owed him. She’ll have to makeit up to Dirthamen later. Maybe in some way that could involve destroyingthis dress.

He’lllike that.

“I’dlike to say No but she’s probably one of the milder cases you’ll meettonight,” Melanadahl admits “Youare, however, under no obligation to be a ‘well-behaved’ wife, if ithelps,”

Selenesown eyebrow quirks as she looks down at him “Really?”

“Whatsort of husband would I be if I told you to stifle your true self?”

Selenehums, before realizing the appeal and returning with “Plus, theworse I am, the better Mahvir will look when you finally bring himalong, right?”

“See,I knew you’d catch on. A fellow genius, truly.”
