Levon Helm recording “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” in West Hollywood, 1969. Photo by Elliott Landy.
“You can hear what he’s singing just from seeing that picture,” Landy says. “He is just so beautiful.”
I think the problem with Wei Wuxian is that because of the circumstances he grew up under , he has the tendency to intellectualise his emotions and feelings a lot . Add in the fact that he's a genuinely intelligent person, it causes ....not a very few problems .
And since the novel is primarily from his perspective he appears very rational because he's constantly analyzing the situation while being under the influence of his emotions and he *appears* and agrees with himself that he *is* acting rationally and practically .
Even under duress , or rather , especially under extreme stress , Wei Wuxian has a tendency of rather than dealing with his emotions, ignoring them and searching for a means to *cure*himself of the *problems* causing him said emotions while simultaneously counteracting the external situations presented to him .
It's not that Wei Wuxian has strict forms of morality or principles , like most people state , it's that his intellectualization often stems from a *need* of having morality he internally couldn't counter . Because he's gone too far in several cases and he really wants to not have to deal with emotions like the guilt and regret and so many unnamable emotions and having a strict code to fall back on in times of indescion .
I also think this to be a reason why he was so tremendously drawn to Lan Wangji . Curiosity and his constant need to analyse his situations and implement the appropriate characterization and mental defences .
It's a survival tactic . Because undeniably he faced abuse growing up .

I love that they’re both able to relate to each other on a similar experience

“Lan Zhan, where are you? I’m… I-I’m here! Lan Zhan!”
There is only silence.
He shouts his throat hoarse, calling out again and again, until suddenly he’s pulled forward, arms wrapping around him in a familiar tight embrace, and his eyes immediately starts to water.
“Found you…” the voice whispers, resounding exhaustion but not without relief.
Clutching tightly at broad shoulders, he doesn’t let go. He’ll never let go. Not ever again. Not even when he feels the lingering of fingers brushing against the back of his neck before the warmth of soft lips desperately captures his own.
