The Garrison training grounds were buzzing with even more activity than usual, with every notable name in the Salainen militia turned out with their skull-clad armour polished and weapons keenly sharpened. A group of mages sat in the corner discussing elemental advantages whilst a senior soldier ran aerial drills amongst the gnarled branches and tight-knit vines.

“All this fuss for a mere tournament?” a dark skydancer mused, approaching a group of Garrison officers with his brow raised. 

“Good morning, Lyric,” Aysel chucked, making room for the other dragon in the shade, “I see your opinion on Warrior’s Way hasn’t wavered from last year.”

“We’re stretched thinly enough without sending our finest warriors half-way across Sorneith,” he replied bluntly.

“I’m inclined to agree.” Briallen shrugged, the nocturne tilting his head up from a broken axe he’d been fixing. “Our leader seems very certain of us showing ourselves there, however.”

“It’s the one week a year we can show our strength to the whole of Sorneith. I understand the value in it,” Aysel reasoned. “With larger Nature and Shadow settlements pushing at our borders, we’d be fools to let the opportunity pass us by.”

Lyric rumbled noncommittally, sweeping his tail in a gesture toward the training soldiers. “Maybe if our recruits put this much effort into their border patrols, we wouldn’t be having the issue in the first place.”

A few other officers offered their agreement.

“A fair point, young Lyric. Perhaps you should bring it up with Roxo at our next council.” 

“If you want your head lopped off and fed to some bonepickers,that is,” Briallen added with a snort, giving his axe a final once-over before taking flight to join the fray.

Aysel shook his head with a smile. “Well, it gets Narcissus out of my whiskers for a few days at least. I just hope he doesn’t come back with another broken wing like last year - the healers were most irritated when he refused to rest it.”

The rising star of the Garrison came crashing through the canopy above as if summoned, the guardian only a plum-hued blur in their vision as he hounded a cluster of petrified-looking youngsters down into the shadowy depths of the forest floor. His bellowing battle cries sent birds scattering up and out into the sky, making both officers exchange grimaces.

Battle was the lifeblood of the Salainen, deeply ingrained into its society for better or worse; this new Sorneith tradition was certainly something that ignited their forest into a blaze that swept the entire nation.
