Tracy Scarpulla's son, Remmington, became fast friends with Xavier, an African-American boy she babysat. The boys both loved superheroes.

In 2008, Tracy Scarpulla was a stay-at-home mom home schooling her three kids in Washington. When she answered an ad to babysit a 5-year-old boy, she didn't think anything of the fact that her family was white and Xavier was black. But she soon learned that others did.

Scarpulla spent many days taking the four children into Washington to see the sights, museums and the zoo. Xavier's grandmother, who was caring for him while his father served overseas in the military, worked long hours as a nurse, so he often spent the whole day with the Scarpullas and sometimes slept over.

Her children, especially 6-year-old son Remmington, became fast friends with Xavier. The boys bonded over their love of superheroes, Legos and G.I. Joes (Scarpulla's husband had also served in the military). Scarpulla remembers Remmington always being disappointed on days when she wasn't looking after Xavier and asking when he'd be coming over next.

The boys loved each other so much, in fact, that Remmington took to introducing Xavier as his brother.

But caring for children of different races – especially ones who introduced themselves as brothers – seemed to mean that strangers felt entitled to comment on Scarpulla's situation. As someone who was "raised in a family where racism was not present," she wasn't prepared for it.

"Walking around D.C. with a child from 'another race' was not something that my children or I viewed as different or unusual," she explained. But apparently, not everyone felt the same way. Scarpulla began to notice that her brood was attracting "bizarre looks" and even invasive questions.

"I was not prepared for the significant amount of people who would ask me, "Are they all yours?'" she said.

She never really got the chance to reply. "The people who would ask this unnecessary question would almost always give me a truly bizarre look and walk away. I was truly saddened to see that racism, even in small ways, still existed."

Thankfully, "the kids had no clue what was going on" when people would make comments, she said. "They were just happy kids on an adventure."

Five years later, Scarpulla has broached the subject with her children. The family left Washington for Denver and now lives in Albany, New York, so they don't see Xavier anymore – Remmington "cried for days" over not being able to see his friend after the move – but the subject came up when Scarpulla decided to share her experience with CNN iReport.

"When they read my article, my kids were questioning why people were so rude, and so we had many talks about racism and how it affects people," she said. "They still think it is odd and very wrong that people would treat someone differently based upon skin color."

"I don't pretend to know how it feels to be black or Hispanic or any other race," she added. "All I know is racism should not exist. … But this nation will not be able to move on and become equal if we continue to glorify racial divide."

Scarpulla hopes that her son's generation can help make even the subtle racism she experienced a nonissue. She's cautiously optimistic about the future, citing Hollywood movies and TV shows as important cultural role models that are "portraying multiracial families and friendships as normal" more and more.
