A case of sartorial indulgence: IGN Joseph’shirts and ties

Sartorial aficionados are usually familiar with the elegant Ignatius Joseph sporting his legendary outfit featuring red shoes, grey trousers and blue jacket. What may sometimes go unnoticed is the actual quality of his clothes. Though based in Dusseldorf, his brand, IGN Joseph, offers made-in-Italy products that are completely in synch with the prevailing contemporary style, a mixture of classic style and special sartorial flair.
He sent me a shirt and tie for review. I already owned an IGN Joseph shirt, with soft collar and dark Bengal stripes, in a very easy-to-wear cut. Unsurprisingly, this new shirt is on a par with the excellent craftsmanship that I expected.
This time, the collar is a stunning cutaway with a slightly rounded curve that adds a refined character to the usually very straight and aggressive lines of most cutaway collars. This one has another nice touch, a stitch that runs along the collar, about one inch from the edge, adding a lovely detail. It also makes sure that the tip of the collar touches the shirt, resting nicely under the jacket. It keeps its shape but without any stiffness.
The rest of the shirt is replete with such detailing: triangular hem gussets, one piece yoke at the back, no placket, horizontal last button with contrasted zampa di gallina stitch, French seam, excellent pattern-matching and perfectly polished mother-of-pearl buttons.
The two-fold cotton has a gorgeous feel, the hand alone letting you know this is a quality garment. By the way, the packaging is impeccable—and smells very nice too—  and you get a pair of extra collar stays.
As for the fit, given that this is ready-to-wear the sizing will depend on each person’s body shape. As far as I am concerned the balance between collar size, torso and arm length is good — arms a little too long for me but it’s something I can live with.
The navy tie ranks among the essentials of any wardrobe. For what is supposed to a basic staple, there’s actually a lot to admire: it’s silk and cotton and there’s a slightly textured hand, bringing depth of colour and feel. The finishing is very thorough: self-tipped, with slip-stitch and a lovely cross-stitched travetto. Yellow branding is subtle and contrasts well with the dark colour. The knot is full and easy to give shape to. At 7cm in width, the tie has a straight cut without any excessive flare.
One could go on about every single aspect of the products. Although technical points are important, it’s not what really matters if you’re not a tailor. As a simple connoisseur, the feel of the garment is always what you make out instinctively. It translates into that special pleasure of well-made clothes, a mixture of reliability and stylishness, of sharpness and snugness. And ultimately this is what we acknowledge when we open our wardrobe to pick our favourites.
