A big topic to consider. We started this discussion on our igtv, specifically about using the judgment statement "good job". ⁣ ⁣ "Good job" has become an empty statement, because we overuse it. It is also a judgment statement where children are just looking for the judgmental praise instead of the observational positive statement. Instead of our children doing something for the inevitable "good job", don't we want them to do it for themselves and feel that empowerment? Instead of "good job" try "you did it!" Tummy time tip: Using props during tummy time motivates babies to reach out in front of their bodies. As a baby tries to grab a prop while on his or her belly, he or she has to reach with an arm and hand, twist the torso, and shift body weight, all without losing balance. Mirror play can be significant to your child’s emerging self-awareness. During the first year of a child’s life, mirror play develops from (a) looking into the mirror and seeing what is perceived as an extension of the world, not a reflection of it, to (b) perceiving what is in the mirror as different from the surroundings, to (c) recognizing that what is seen in the mirror is unique to the viewer. At that point, there begins an identity relationship between the self as experienced from within, and the self that is displayed on the surface of the mirror. Recognizing “self,” interestingly enough, is the first step in your child’s journey to empathy. Adults should talk to children about what they see in a mirror. “See your face.
