Day 11 - Rain
———————————————————————
Luka stood out on the deck of the Liberty ship, leaning back against the wall of the cabin outside. It was storming out, rain pouring from the sky in fat droplets but he was too numb to really care at the moment. He had gotten into a rather rough fight with his sister and felt it was still to recent to try talking to her. So he instead had chosen to sit outside in the rain, letting himself be soaked. His hair dropped into his face, slick and dark looking while it was wet, looking closer to midnight blue than the usual dark teal. Sass idly floated next to him, a small frown on his face. “You should try to talk to her.” He hissed, a worried tone in his usual wise voice. “Usually I would Sass but it’s been a bad day..I’d probably just lash out again.” He huffed, a water droplet running down his nose and landing on his bare foot.
He sighed lightly, sliding down against the wood and sitting down. Thunder rumbled in the distance faintly with a bright crack of lightning, arching across the gray skies. The sound of the rain against the wood was a bit satisfying, like millions of pellets thudding against the boards. Sass stayed silent for a few more moments, his hood protecting his eyes mostly. He slowly floated down towards his chosen’s hand and circled his tail lightly around his finger. “Perhaps you could message your friends on the magic light box?” Luka chuckled lightly, his mood lifting momentarily. “It’s called a phone, Sass. Not a magic light box.” Sass bared his fangs in a smile. “My apologies, I am still learning modern human technologies. But my point still stands, why not message your friends?”
Luka shook his head once again. “I don’t wanna bother them, they’re probably busy with other stuff. Hanging out and things like that.” Sass bit his finger lightly. “Luka, stop thinking like that,” he hissed, “It’s raining outside and your friends care about you. I doubt they are hanging out.” He hissed before continuing. “If you are not gonna talk to them, then talk to Bunnix.” Luka turned his head. “But last night she told me she nearly had a panic attack! I don’t wanna scare her more by being upset. I’ll just burden her.” Sass was about to lecture his holder again, going to say something along the lines of, “If you comfort her and she won’t comfort you then she isn’t a real friend.” But suddenly, the rain had stopped. Not that it had stopped raining everywhere, just specifically over them. Sass glanced up, eyes widened upon the sight of Bunnix sitting above them, her legs kicking gently as she held the umbrella over him, her hair quickly turning a deep cherry red from her usual pink as it was rain filled. “Those are signs of depression, blueberry. Oh and by the way, it’s physically impossible for you to burden me.”
Luka jumped slightly, quickly glancing up. “Bunnix?! What are you doing, my mom could see you here!” The rabbit heroine narrowed her eyes. “Luka, hush. She won’t, because I’ve made sure she won’t come out here.” She jumped down, standing next to him. Currently, she appeared taller but that was only because he was sitting down. Her umbrella continued to protect him from the onslaught of rain, while she was drenched in it. “Why don’t you get under the umbrella? You’ll get sick.” Bunnix smiled. “It’s out of politeness, you seem like you need space at the moment.” She shrugged. Luka was quiet for a moment, his ears tinted with color now. “If it were anyone but you, I would agree. But..you’re you.” He murmured, barely audible over the sounds of the thunder rumbling in the distance. Slowly, Bunnix sat down, meeting his eyes. She found herself staring into them for a moment, watching the lightning behind her in the distance flicker in his eyes. Almost on instinct she moved closer, nearly in a trance like state. Her umbrella lowered, both once again having the rain drip around them with soft plunks against the wood.
Luka shifted onto his knees momentarily, Sass having left after Bunnix made her appearance to give the two their privacy. His hair was stuck to his forehead, plastered there by the onslaught of water. Their eyes met momentarily before they leaned in, not really paying attention to the world around them. It was mainly the heat of the moment that drove them together, lips meeting softly, barely even feeling like they were there. It felt like velvet to both of them, their eyes closed. The kiss didn’t last long however, as they snapped out of their moment from a loud burst of thunder right above them. Bunnix was the first to lean away, rather quickly with her face flushed hard. Luka glanced away, embarrassed. “Ah..sorry. Don’t know what happened there.” Bunnix stuttered momentarily, her fingers touching to her mouth repeatedly. She hadn’t really expected to enjoy it that much, nor did she know why she had even done it in the first place.
“Uh..” Not really sure what else to do, Bunnix raised her umbrella again, shielding them both and pressing into his side to hide underneath the umbrella as well. “Sorry.” Luka said quickly. “N-No, it’s my fault! I initiated it..I think. God I can’t even remember?” She wondered, rather confused. “Neither can I to be entirely honest. Something just..possessed me to do that. Maybe it’s having a pretty girl next to me.” Bunnix gave a light-hearted laugh, a sound that Luka had become addicted to rather quickly over spending time with her. It was his version of alcohol at this point. The same was true for Bunnix when it came to seeing her partner smile. It made her want to tackle him and kiss him for the rest of eternity, now that she thought about it. When had her longing been this powerful? She hadn’t really realized she was in love, or so deeply in love for that matter, up until this point. Was her denial about him that powerful she had managed to not realize it?
“Luka..what are we exactly?” Bunnix said slowly. The boy blinked, turning to her. A small strand of deep pink hair was layered over her eye, which she shifted over but it remained stuck to her skin like glue from the dampness. “What do you mean?” The guitarist knew exactly what she was talking about. “I can’t tell what our status is. We’ll jokingly flirt, get much closer to each other, or even carry each other. And now..well..” Bunnix’s face tinged a darker shade. Luka went quiet. “I don’t know I..I feel attracted to you on some level but..it’s complicated.” Bunnix stayed quiet for about a minute or so, her face twisting as she thought. “My..my brother described us as friends with benefits..does that fit us?” She asked, looking at him. Luka chuckled, “..Yeah. Yeah it does. We aren’t dating but we aren’t friends.”
Luka hooked an arm around her quietly. “What exactly happened?” Luka hummed in response to her question, prompting her to explain what she meant. “Why were you upset? Did something happen?” Luka sighed, “Me and Juleka..we uh..got in a fight.” Bunnix frowned. “I’m sorry, I’ve fought with my brother before and it sucks. What was it about?” She kinda had a feeling she knew what it was about already. She had heard Juleka talking about it in class yesterday. “It was about our..my dad.” Bunnix blinked. “Only your dad? I thought you were twins?” Luka shook his head. “No..it turns out mum lied. Juleka’s only my half sister, she has a different dad and well..we got in a fight. There’s also the fact Juleka doesn’t really like Jagged anymore, and says he left us to raise a crocodile over being with his family.” Luka muttered, lightening flashing overhead once more.
Bunnix stayed quiet, a thoughtful look on her face. “She’s kinda right.” Luka made a noise in protest, a small frown on his face she vaguely found to be adorable. God, how was she just noticing these things and only now being able to acknowledge them? Though maybe that was a blessing, as it could’ve let to some..moments being a little bit more than what they were. Such as the concert night..god he must’ve been hysterical internally and she hadn’t even realized. She had been in close proximity to him, her fingers basically caressing her face. God knows how she would’ve felt in that situation and she blessed the fact Tigress had spared her from that. Though she did wonder if she had set her up to do Viperion last on purpose though. It might’ve even ended up worse if she had any of the wine before-hand. Luka was still staring at her with a slightly hurt look. “You agree with her? I don’t get it really..”
“Luka, if your dad had really cared about family over his career and a crocodile, he would’ve stayed with you rather then leaving your mom alone when she was most likely pregnant, considering you had no memories of him. He would’ve raised you alongside her and Juleka would be your full, biological sister rather than your half sister. I’m sorry, but it is the truth.” Luka stared at the wood boards for a few moments, before making a small noise of distress. Bunnix immediately melted, guilt welling up in her heart. She had never been made upset so quickly in her entire life, and all from a small noise from him. “Oh dear god I’m so sorry..” She quickly pulled him up, lifting him into her arms and standing, pushing the umbrella beneath her chin and opening the door to inside.
Bunnix stepped below deck, the noise of the storm becoming muffled above them. She shuffled her way to his room, sitting him down on the bed and wrapping him in his towel that was hanging from the door. She was now realizing that perhaps, sitting in the rain might not have been the best decision, even if it was mid-summer and the rain was warm. A small squeak left her as her arm was tugged, pulling her over back to Luka where he clung to her side. “So I got in an argument with her for being right..” Bunnix glanced away for a few seconds before turning back to him. “You just need to apologize. But for now though..that can wait.” She shifted her position around him, leaning against the back wall of his bedroom with him facing her, before pulling him close to her chest. His head hung over her shoulder, leaning into her neck, his body shaking with muffled cries. “Shh..let it out. It’s ok, I won’t judge.” She murmured, rubbing his damp hair between her fingers. “I’ll always be here.”
