Magnus finds them in the living room when he steps through the portal after a grueling three-day trip with the warlock council in Mozambique.
Itâs the delighted cry of âPapa!â from his five-year-old daughter that greets him first, followed closely by a tiny figure barreling into his legs. He looks down to see Amayaâs face shining up at him, a wide grin splitting her face. Almost immediately, the fatigue gripping his neck and shoulders dissipates as he bends down to pick her up, and he laughs as she winds her arms around his neck and holds on tightly.
âOh my baby, I missed you so much.â He says, hugging her close and letting the sweet smell of her strawberry scented shampoo fill him with indescribable warmth.
She pulls her head out of his neck. âYou wanna come to my tea party with Daddy?â
Magnus looks over her shoulder to see the coffee table covered in what looks to be a brand new tea set. An assortment of Amayaâs toys occupy different spots around the table, including the green Frankenstein sheâd begged for for her last birthday, her figurine of Shuri, and the blue teddy bear with the eyepatch sheâd gotten after coercing her Uncle Simon into buying it for her. The Chairman skulks about, looking incredibly displeased at the flower crown and Superman cape that his daughter seems to have been successful at forcing on him.
And in the midst of it all, Alec sits on the floor next to the coffee table. Heâs got this small, beautiful smile on his face as he takes in the two of them. The kind of smile that only comes out around Magnus and Amaya, like he canât believe that this is his reality. The bright, sparkling purple tiara sitting atop his messy dark hair tugs at something deep in Magnusâ chest, sending a burst of something peaceful, something calm, something that only his husband can elicit, rushing through him.
âHey.â He says softly, in a voice that Magnus could hear for the rest of his life.
Amaya begins bouncing in his arms, impatient and wanting to get back to her tea party. Magnus laughs and sets her down, allowing her to take him by the hand and drag him to sit next to Alec on the ground beside the coffee table.
He leans in close and presses a kiss to Alecâs lips, relishing the feeling after three days of not being able to do so. A small noise of contentment escapes Alecâs throat, and Magnus feels his lips curve up in a smile against his, just as his fingers come up to touch his neck, to touch the beads of his necklaces.
When they pull back, Alecâs eyes are shining with unbridled joy. Itâs a look Magnus wants to paint into permanence, so that it could exist long after theyâre both gone, if only to add some beauty and wonder to the world.
Amaya stamps her feet and clears her throat loudly to call their attention. Magnus turns his gaze to her, grinning.
âWell, Iâm certainly glad I made it back in time for this wonderful occasion.â He says, winking at a giggling Amaya as he takes a tea cup from her, âThank you, darling. When did you come up with this idea?â
âShe heard one of the girls at daycare talking about tea parties and she just had to have one.â Alec says fondly, tugging gently on one of Amayaâs tight, black curls. âSo of course, we stopped at the toy store on the way home and picked up the worldâs best tea set.â
âWanâ a cookie?â Amaya holds out an empty plate to her parents, who each pick up a âcookieâ with enthusiasm.
âMmm, this is good, sweetie.â Alec says, making exaggerated noises of content as he takes bites of his âcookie.â Magnus nods along in affirmation, going so far as to pick up another one from the empty plate. The resultant beam that spreads across his daughterâs face is worth everything.
âThanks Daddy.â
Amaya turns her attention to Frankenstein, and soon becomes embroiled in a deep conversation with him, refilling his tea cup every two seconds and taking sips of her own, pinky stuck out. Magnus is filled with a sense of wonder, as he so often is, when he looks at his daughter. Nothing in the entire course of human history has ever looked so beautiful, and nothing probably will. She was a little warlock who had come to them after Alec had found her abandoned in a feral werewolf hideout on the outskirts of the city when she was but a month old. She was barely alive, and it had taken weeks of close monitoring and every drop of magic Magnus had to slowly nurse her back to health. When the time came to put her up for adoption, Alec had taken one look at him and Magnus knew that they felt the same â Amaya was their daughter. And theyâd be damned if they let anyone take her away from them.
Magnus looks at Alec, then. Heâs wearing sweatpants, and a dark blue sweater, worn and soft with use, the same one Magnus has slipped over his own head more times than he can count. His feet are bare, tucked under him. When heâs like this, Magnus loves him more than he can put to words. When heâs just Alexander, his husband, and the father of his child. To no surprise at all, Magnus finds that he just canât tear his eyes away from him.
Sue him. The sight of this ridiculously tall, strong Shadowhunter man who also happens to be the Head of his Institute wearing a princess tiara and graciously accepting a refill of his tea cup from his five-year-old daughter is more adorable than it has any right to be.
Alec catches Magnus smiling like a lovesick fool at him. âWhat?â
âYouâre wearing a purple tiara.â Magnus notes, warmth curling in his chest.
âI am wearing a purple tiara.â Alec says proudly, grin widening and gazed fixed on Magnus as he picks up his tea cup, sticks his pinky out and takes a sip from the cup, eliciting a giggle of delight from their little girl. Alec turns to her and presses a kiss into her curls.
God, Magnus loves him so damn much.
âWhoâs sitting there?â Magnus asks, gesturing to an empty spot right next to Amaya.
âAh.â Alec says solemnly, âThatâs for Mr. Rags.â
Magnus bites back a grin and schools his features. âOh. So I take it Mr. Rags isnât back from vacation yet?â
âNo.â Alec sighs along with Amaya, who looks at the empty spot with a forlorn look.
Mr. Rags, bless his soul, was Amayaâs stuffed tiger who had gone missing after Madzie had accidentally created a portal to an alternate dimension during one of her lessons with Magnus. To prevent a complete and utter meltdown, Magnus and Alec had made up the story that Mr. Rags was away on an extended vacation travelling the world. Â
Amaya busies herself with pouring tea for her other guests, stopping at each one and having long conversations with them.
âGod, sheâs beautiful.â Alec murmurs, setting his cup down and shaking his head in disbelief, âSheâs so perfect. How can one person be so perfect?â Â
âShe gets it from her dad.â Magnus says, grinning. Alec rolls his eyes, but he takes Magnusâ hand and brings it up to his lips nonetheless, pressing absent-minded kisses to his knuckles, to the wedding band on his ring finger. Â
Everything that Magnus thought he would never have is alive in front of him right now. A family, his family, something thatâs worth any adventure the world could offer him. His world centers around this. His daughter sitting across from him with an earth-shattering smile on her face, and the love of his life sitting next to him, his hand clasped around Magnusâ, holding on the way heâd promised he would at their wedding. Â
Itâs a life heâd only ever dreamt of, on cold nights when he had nothing but his thoughts to keep him company. A dream brought to life by the best person heâs met in his centuries of life.
âLetâs have another kid.â He blurts out then, turning to look at Alec.
Alecâs face holds no surprise, or shock, but rather his eyes shine with the promise of Magnusâ future. He tightens his grip on Magnusâ hand, just as Amaya comes to them to crawl into his lap, resting her feet on Magnusâ thigh. Alecâs smile becomes impossibly wider.

âI will fix it. I will use the last drop of my power if itâs the death of me.â
His voice is laden with guilt, and sorrow, and resolve, and it sends a torrent of pain through Alec. He pushes aside everything that had happened, from that disastrous breakfast, to the image of the box still branded into his memory, and steps forward. He tugs Magnus to him, wrapping his arms around his shoulders tightly.
It takes Magnus a second to sink into the hug. But then he does, and Alec feels him melt against his body, feels the residual tension from their meeting with the others earlier slowly leave his shoulders and fall to the floor. Suddenly, everything fades away. The noise of the Institute melts into the background. All Alec can feel is him, his grounding presence against the chaos of everything.
When they break apart, he lingers close. He canât step away. Not now.
Magnus glances up at him then. âAre you coming back tonight?â His voice is soft, barely above a whisper, apprehension lingering. Like he still expects Alec to push him away. Â
Alec swallows, trying to ignore the painful muscle that pulls in his chest. Thereâs nothing he wants more. He wants to forget everything, for just a moment, wants to go to the loft that he had thought of as home, wants to feel Magnusâ arms wrap around him. He wants to shove aside the storm brewing inside him, the fear for his parabatai. The pain of the argument, and Magnusâ eyes, brewing with anger, cutting into him not a day ago.
The steady beat of his own heart, something that had begun to feel like a countdown.
âDo you want me to?â He asks carefully, because he wonât, not if Magnus needs his space.
âYes.â The word rushes out of Magnus, quiet, yet fervent. His eyes are open, soft brown, lined with muted black, gazing into Alecâs.
Alec brings a hand up to touch his face, slowly at first, asking for permission, and cups his face gently when Magnus leans into his touch. His eyes flutter shut for just a second, before he opens them again.
âOkay.â
No sooner than the word falls from his lips, Alec feels the familiar surge of wind from a portal hit the back of his neck. He folds his fingers into Magnusâ, and walks backwards until the wave of magic envelopes him. Portal travel has never been the most comfortable experience, but itâs different when itâs Magnus. To Alec, it feels as familiar as Magnusâ rings pressing into the palm of his hand, as familiar as his smile on a warm morning. As familiar as his lips, mapping out constellations on his skin.
And Magnus keeps his eyes fixed on Alexander as they step into the bedroom of the loft. The light is softer here. The rushed voices and sounds of the Institute linger in his ears, slowly softening into silence.
Magnus waves his free hand to change both of them out of their clothes and into more comfortable ones. He walks them over to the bed. Feels Alexanderâs fingers tighten their hold on his own as they slip under the covers.
It feels different. A line of tension winds its way down the contours of Alexanderâs shoulders, a residual crease between his eyebrows. Thereâs a space between them on the bed where they lay facing each other. A space currently occupied by their intertwined hands.
The curve of Alexanderâs lip cuts through the soft light of the room. Magnus allows himself to memorize every inch of him. Allows himself to find peace, and home, in the luminous hazel of his eyes.
âIâm sorry.â Magnus whispers, and almost immediately, the burning begins in his throat, and his eyes sting with the promise of tears. Â
Alec brings Magnusâ hand up to his lips, eyes wet. He presses a small kiss to the back of his palm. âIâm sorry too,â he murmurs against his skin. His gaze finds Magnusâ again, âWe both said things we shouldnât have.â
Magnus licks his lips before reaching a hand to place it against Alecâs cheek. He runs his thumb over the expanse of his cheekbone, feeling the prickle of day-old stubble against his fingers. Alecâs eyes are wide, and soft, and heâs looking at him with the kind of look Magnus only sees when itâs directed towards him. Like the doors to heaven could open up for him and heâd still want to be right here, in Magnusâ arms.
Heâs so beautiful.
âI was reminded of something today.â Alec says quietly, thumb drawing small circles over the back of Magnusâ palm, âI donât know if you already know this, but I hadnât remembered it till now.â
He swallows, takes in a breath before speaking again, âNephilim â we only love once.â
Magnusâ fingers stop in their gentle movements, âWhat do you mean?â
Alec shifts closer to him, âI mean, we only fall in love, like truly fall in love, once. In our whole lives. We could be with a number of people, but once we find the one? Thatâs â thatâs it. Forever.â
Magnus had known of the intensity of a mortalâs life, how they felt everything more in every sense of the word. But he hadnât expected this. Hadnât expected to find the beat of Alecâs heart tied inexplicably to his own. And he canât remember when his heart had picked up its pace, when it had begun to feel like nothing outside this room and this cocoon of blankets and this man lying across from him mattered.
âSo what you said over breakfast, itâs not true. Even if I had been with someone before you, it wouldnât have made a difference,â Alec continues, completely oblivious to Magnusâ heart thrumming an erratic rhythm against his chest, âbecause youâre it for me. You were always going to be it. You are, quite literally, the love of my life.â
Itâs in moments like this, when Alexander speaks to him as though there is a direct connection between his mouth and his heart, that leave Magnus lost for words. Alec has always been the kind of person who, when he feels something, feels it to the core of his being. The intensity with which he feels, and loves, is something that Magnus loves endlessly about him.
And itâs the wrong time to be at a loss for words, because all Magnus wants to do now is tell Alec that there is never going to be anyone else for him either, that this, what they have, this is it. This is what he wants forever, that Alexander Lightwood is the love of his life. That Magnus would move heaven and earth and hell and everything in between to find a way to keep this until time itself became obsolete.
He leans forward and closes the distance between their lips. Itâs a kiss meant to love, and affirm. A promise, that this is as real for him as it is for Alexander.
When he pulls back, Alecâs eyes remain shut for a few more seconds, like he had found himself again. Magnus drinks in the way the hazel of his eyes reminds him of the forest, and of sunshine, and of honeyed kisses all at once.
âDo you have any idea how much I love you?â Itâs not a question Magnus expects an answer to, and he sees the effect of the words in Alec, in the way the crease between his eyebrows softens immediately, the way his lips part. The way pure adoration pours from his eyes.
Magnus pulls him closer, until Alexanderâs breath ghosts over his collarbones. He wraps his arm around Alecâs torso, pulling the one still locked with Alecâs up to his chest.
âIf I could have my way with the world, Iâd have you by my side forever. Iâd never let you go.â
He presses his lips to Alecâs knuckles. âI meant what I said, Alexander, all those weeks ago,â he says quietly, âThat youâd unlocked something in me. This â this is it for me too.â
And I will do whatever it takes to keep it that way.
âI love you.â Alec whispers, and Magnus can sense the underlying promise in his voice, and he knows that even though the fight to find their forever will be long, and arduous, he wonât be alone.
He kisses Alexander again, for that promise. For a love that feels like that the stars had aligned themselves right in front of him.
The words hang in the air for a minute after the door closes behind Maryse. Magnus looks at it for a few seconds, a sense of comfort and ease washing over him, something he never thought heâd ever associate with Maryse Lightwood.
Alexanderâs eyes are trained on him. Magnus turns to see him, luminous hazel eyes looking at him as though heâs the reason behind everything good in the world.
Itâs a smile that seems to float its way into the deepest recesses of his heart. For a moment, this moment, everything falls into place. Nothing is too difficult, or painful. Magnus can forget about the demonic activity ravaging the city, can forget about the infuriatingly smug expression on Lorenzo Reyâs face, because none of it matters. None of it, not when he has Alexander smiling at him like this, in a moment of peace.
Magnus feels like heâs loved him for years. Like their love was woven into the fabric of the universe from the moment of its inception.
He reaches forward and cups Alecâs face, and lets his thumb run across the curve of his cheekbone. Alec leans into his touch, smile widening. Magnus feels his heart flutter when he turns his head and presses his lips to Magnusâ palm.
Alec watches as Magnus drops his hand and walks back into the loft, watches as he lets out a sigh and stretches his arms out. And he wonders how heâd ever gone a day without feeling like this. Without feeling his stomach twist itself into knots, without feeling like forever was something that could have meaning.
He follows him inside, stopping right behind him and wrapping an arm around his waist. Alec presses his lips to his shoulder, and Magnus turns around in his arms, eyes shining.
âThereâs nothing to thank me for, my love.â Magnus leans forward and pressing a soft kiss to Alecâs lips, âAnything for you.â
Alec smiles at him, lets himself memorise the soft uptick of Magnusâ lips. But soon, his motherâs face finds its way back into his mind. He remembers the tears that sprung to her eyes, tears she hid behind an unwavering voice and steadfast strength. His father had escaped the wrath of the Clave unscathed, and his mother was taking the brunt of everything. The injustice of it burns its way through him.
âI have to help her, Magnus.â Alec murmurs, letting his thumb draw little circles over the cloth covering Magnusâ hip, âSheâs â sheâs made her mistakes in the past, but deruning? It would ruin her life, everything sheâs ever worked for. Itâs so unfair.â
Magnus cups his face gently. His hands are warm, a contrast against the cool bumps of metal of the many rings that adorn his fingers. Itâs a feeling Alec has come to associate with safety, and love, and home.
âWe will help her, Alexander.â Magnusâ shine with conviction, âWhatever it takes â we will fight this. I promise you.â
Alec takes him in, the other half of his soul. The man who changed his life in the best way possible. Magnus gives him a smile then, a smile that sears itself into his memory. It touches the very tips of his being. Itâs like a breath of fresh air, like feeling his head break the surface of water. Alec leans forward and rests his forehead against Magnusâ. A small sigh falls from Magnusâ lips, a sound that grounds Alec against the chaos of the world raging outside. He pulls him closer, until all he can fathom is the adoration in his eyes, and Alec finds himself again in the steady beat of Magnusâ heart against his own.
Itâs finally here! I finally got my shit together, and Iâm so excited to get started on my first ever multi-chapter for malec :â) This is inspired by the 2015 Bollywood film Dil Dhadakne Do. If you haven't watched, I HIGHLY recommend you do so. Your life will be Changed⢠for the better.Â

And then she gets this knowing look in her eyes, setting her nail file down. âUnless of course, thereâs an underlying reason. And if that underlying reason just happens to have dark hair, and hazel eyes, and âthe crooked smile that sets fire to every vein in your body.â Thatâs what you said, if I remember correctly, hm?â
