Buddha Purnima 2026 falls on May 1. Lumbini, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath will be glowing with butter lamps from before sunrise. Pilgrims from across Asia gather here every year on this day.

The pre-sunrise lamp ceremony at the Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini is one of those experiences that is genuinely hard to describe. Thousands of people standing in silence in the dark, waiting for the first lamp to be lit.
