headcanons about celebrating life day with luke? :D
funnily enough i actually have a point in my notes to do something like this so thank you
i accidentally went crazy and did multiple different situations. oops. first life day (apart), second (together) and one after the war with the gang and chewie's family on kashyyyk. some creative liberties taken but i love you star wars holiday special. um also sorry if the presents are totally bad, its hard to come up with ideas idk. also my first time testing out using a nickname, i feel like it went well with the gift so thats why. it feels a little awkward here but i think it'd flow better in a properly written story
your first life day together...
typical, luke is on a mission.
the two of you had agreed not to do anything. it was a busy time, and you were apart
a few days after life day, his x wing touched back down in the hangar
after a quick reunion, luke climbed back up into his x wing and pulled out a bunch of wilted flowers.
a little dead from being in his x wing the past few weeks, but you didn't care. it was the first time a boy had ever gotten you a life day present
you playfully shoved luke's shoulder, showing your fake annoyance. "we agreed we weren't getting each other anything," you murmured as luke pulled you into a hug, further squishing the flowers and pressed a kiss to your hair
luke, giving you his puppy dog eyes, told you that he really was going to follow the agreement, but the flowers were pretty (at least they used to be, he added. you still thought they were, no matter what they looked like) and he couldn't not get them for you
you couldn't help but smile, he was so sweet. you hadn't even been together for very long yet, only a few months. it was very new
but you could tell he liked you very much
you put the flowers in a makeshift vase next to your bunk, feeling giddy every time you looked at them. luke got them for you. you didn't care how wilted they were, it was the thought behind them
once they started to really die, you pressed them and turned them into a little stone and always it in your pocket as a sort of good luck charm
your second life day together...
finally, this year you were together for life day
on the rebel base, chewie and the other wookiees helped set up as life day originated from kashyyyk
the mess hall was transformed, with string lights hung up among other decorations, and a makeshift tree of life, not a real wroshyr tree but just a small one that had fallen down near base, was placed in a corner, along with what looked like the glowing life day orbs
it was a nice sight to see, and the cooks of the rebellion even promised to make a festive meal for all those on base
it kept both you and luke in a good mood, which was difficult during a war. but life day was a nice distraction, if not for a little while
luke loved how you were secretly actually very excited for it. every time the two of you were eating in there, or walked past the mess hall in the days leading up to the celebrations
your eyes would linger on the decorations and lights
once again, you and luke had promised each other that you werent going to do presents
but you remembered last year. you werent going to not get him something
but the question was... what?
for months leading up to it, you asked han, leia, chewie, and even wedge and his other rogues for help. but they all told you that you'd know him best
you were worried. you wanted to get the perfect gift. you wanted to make it a perfect life day for luke- he didn't really get to celebrate it growing up. his family didn't have many spare credits
in the end you settled for a little tool kit that he could keep in his x wing. he was always working on his ship, or opening up his fathers lightsaber to see how it worked. he liked to do stuff with his hands and a small set that was portable could be useful, you thought
the other gift was a pair of socks that you had knitted, of a green colour. leia taught you over the months leading up to life day. they were ok for a beginner but at least he could use them. base was cold, and luke was from a desert planet!!
you weren't totally happy with the gifts, you knew it wasn't very personal, but there was little you could do whilst part of a rebellion. you know the presents could be left behind in an escape from the empire
you carefully wrapped the presents in some scrap fabric from blankets and uniforms and really hoped luke would like them
when the morning of life day arrived, you were snuggled up to luke, a rarity. however, he had a very early shift, leaving you to sleep longer
not before giving you a quick kiss and wishing you happy life day, of course
you braided your hair extra nicely, making sure it was smooth and secure before weaving a bit of tinsel through
the whole day, despite everybody working hard, there was a happy atmosphere around the base
the food that day were souped up with a few festive touches, their own take on bantha surprise (as best as the cooks could do with rations), and in a few supply runs, fellow rebels had collected up whatever cider they could and warmed it up for everybody throughout the day
when you and luke finally went through to the mess hall together for dinner, your eyes widened. you didn't notice luke's soft smile as he looked at your reaction to the place decked out in the festivities with the glowpanels dimmed, the string lights providing a warm soft glow around the mess hall
he squeezed your hand and the two of you made your way to receive your rations and drinks, before choosing a table next to the life day tree
after eating your food, a very enjoyable meal (and you hated thinking it, for once) but your tummies were filled and warm, the cider giving a nice buzz, you pulled out the presents you had gotten luke and placed them on the table
"i know we said nothing..." you began, pushing the packages towards him. "but i wanted to get you something."
luke had a guilty look on his face as he pulled a little box out of his own pocket. "i'm glad you said that, because i wanted to get you something too. something better than those flowers, at least," he added shyly
you reached out a hand and took his. "i really liked those flowers, you know."
you and luke exchanged gifts, the threat of war fading to the background of your thoughts
he was beaming when he opened both his gifts, touched at the thoughtfulness. one, for the tools, something he would always be in need of, and secondly for the socks, something you had made yourself
it was your turn to open your gift. it was in a small box, a little battered up, but you didn't mind. it made your heart race that luke had even gotten you anything at all
you inhaled quietly as you opened the box, revealing a simple, pretty silvery star necklace
luke looked very nervous. he hoped you liked it
and you did.
after helping you put it on, he apologised profusely for not getting something useful like you did for him, but you stopped it and promised that you were happy with it. you liked that a little reminder of luke would always be with you. it was also special because star was a nickname that he used for you occasionally, although he usually preferred to call you by your name
you continued to sip at your warm ciders, soon moving next to luke as han, leia, chewie, wedge, and the other rogues came to join at your table
it made you happy to see your friends happy, if even for just a night
walking back to luke's quarters, you confided in him that you had asked all your friends for help on his gifts, but they had told you if anybody could pick the perfect gift for him, it was you
luke just kissed the top of your head, knowing they were right. this was his best life day, and one of his favourite days ever
after getting ready for, and snuggling into his bed, you fiddled with the star charm on your chest. it was cool against your skin, but you didnt mind. you loved it
luke took your hand and pulled you to sit back up, much to your protest
with his other hand, he held up a little bunch of leaves from the tree that was being used for display in the mess hall. "a kiss?" he asked, holding it above your heads
of course, it was tradition to kiss under a sprig from a wroshyr tree. you indulged luke by leaning in, giving him a passionate kiss
your first life day together... once the war had ended
you were sat in the home of chewbacca's family, surrounded by your own family as well as his. han, leia, and luke, who was sat right next to you on the huge, soft sofa
the group had joined chewie for a traditional life day, finally able to celebrate with malla and lumpy all together on kashyyyk
the scent of the festive food filled your nostrils, as you held luke's hand and fiddled with the charm on your necklace with the other, a habit you had
you and luke had already done gifts this morning, you presenting him with a lovely thick cloak, and him gifting you plenty of new data books and, what had become a tradition at this point, a small bunch of flowers. you pressed and saved every one
chewie's family home was cosy and warm, filled with the sounds of lumpy playing with his new toys, showing han, the background noise of the recipe malla was following to make the bantha surprise, and life day tunes
luke was nursing a hot chocolate, one of his favourite treats
later in the day, more of chewie's family joined the group, meeting his sister and father
you all enjoyed the meal together, feeling completely full, before the wookiees all got dressed in their red robes and your group followed them to the life day tree display outside, where all the families gathered
you and luke took a globe yourselves, enjoying getting to see the outdoor festivities and decorations. you thought back to your past life days with luke, grateful now that you could celebrate without the threat of a war
luke looked back at you, eyes glancing down to your necklace, but not without lingering on your lips for a moment. it was clear he was thinking of past life days too, as well as the traditional kiss
"later," you giggled quietly, snuggling up to his arm as you continued to walk to the main display
the ceremony was beautiful, even if c3po's translation was a little loud
you felt honoured to be there on kashyyyk, where life day originated, to celebrate with your loved ones
as the night drew to a close, you and luke found a secluded spot under one of the many wroshyr trees around, and he pulled you closer to him, resting his hands on your waist
"happy life day, star," luke murmured against your lips
"happy life day, luke," you replied, leaning in to close the gap
you knew it was the perfect ending to a perfect day. you and luke both loved the festivities of life day, and would always find the time to celebrate together, never wanting to spend it apart again
