Hard work is giving, and it’s also taking when you need to. The past few months have been filled with a varying magnitude of highs and lows, all of which I believe are necessary to keep my character scale aligned. Separation from a long-term relationship, live shows, recording, musical cars, a career change, personal relations, and moving. My partner and I of nearly eight years split up a few months ago, and with that brought about the need to slowly begin separating our belongs, our finances, and our friendships therein. I ended up selling my car, borrowing one, getting one back from my ex-partner, selling that one, borrowing another one, and purchasing a new one in roughly a three-week span of time. I managed to get a lot of debt paid off using the equity I got from selling the two vehicles, and it helped to set myself up in a new apartment in about two week’s time. It’s been easy and difficult separating - it felt right for both of us to me, and I hope that I’m right in what I felt. I know that it was what I needed in the end, as much as it hurt to go through with it.
We had a live stream show about a month ago, and it was a 3-hour absolute blast shooting the shit with Ricardo at R&R.
Later the same week, thanks to the hard work of our family and friends who helped set up and coordinate, we held a midday benefit show that raised +$12k for the AFSP. A midday show in July in Texas is one of the most brutal things on the body, both for the performers and for the crowd. I’m so thankful for everyone who came out to join us and raise money for the cause. At that show, my ex of about nine years came out with another friend of mine, and I was able to meet with her the next day and talk about what happened nine years ago when we last saw each other. I didn’t every question answered that I wanted, but I feel like it was a good choice to reconnect and clear the air between us.
I’m seeing someone - she’s been out to many of our shows this year, and she’s had my eye for a while. We started off slowly, which I’m grateful for because I haven’t been in my usual headspace. We went to see the Barbie movie on July 23rd - the day after I went to BFE with the guys to support our friends’ show, got cross-faded, and was too messed up to drive home for the first time. I saw her tweet about wanting to invite someone to it, and lo and behold it was me. She showed up at the Astros game the following Wednesday that I went to with my coworker. We went to the Young the Giant concert at 713 Music Hall the next day. I’ve seen her a lot since. We’re seeing each other now, and my head is deciding what it wants to about it. I’m still weeding out my emotional conflicts, but most of this has felt so natural and it’s exciting and terrifying at the same time.
Me and the guys are steadily working - playing, fixing, recording, and growing. Not at easy journey, but a journey is will always want. I’m going to get back to logging again. Memories are important, and being on a new path I’m really internalizing that in lieu of tunnel visioning to the end. I love everything that’s happening - all of it.
