Warriors could not bring himself to say it. Wind loved that thing. Time loved it. Wild loved it. Even Hyrule liked it.

But the bright orange lizard, now the size of a small dog, had been staring at him unnervingly for over an hour. He had not seen it blink, just slowly lick one eyeball after the other. And worse was… the name.

“Greg!” Wind scooped the lizard up. “There you are!”

Greg. That was what Wild had called the Lizalfos they had fought in that dungeon. True, he had then also electro-bombed it with a half-dozen Sparks, and it had almost certainly died. That had been three portals ago too.

If Warriors had not been surrounded by living, breathing proof of apparent reincarnation, he would feel a lot better about his chances.

As it was, he was pretty sure Greg was out to get him.

“You’re being paranoid.” Time’s voice made Warriors jump a foot in the air.

“What– we told you, no more using that weird mask to read our thoughts!”

“I wasn’t reading your thoughts, you just have that look.” Time smiled thinly. “Admiring the sailor’s pet?”

Greg had settled into Wind’s arms, head resting in the crook of his elbow in seeming contentment. But his gaze never left Warriors.

“Are we sure it’s not a Lizalfos? It’s gotten kind of… big.” 

“He’s a lizard. And he doesn’t seem to mean any harm.” Time snorted. “I’m surprised he’s lasted this long. But perhaps that’s a testament to the sailor’s rearing.”

“I watched it eat a Miniblin whole yesterday.” Warriors shuddered. “It’s growing so fast. What happens when it hits full size?”

“It’ll probably be able to eat a full Moblin then.”

“Not funny. I mean… if it becomes aggressive–”

“Captain, everyone here is a capable hero.” Time’s expression grew stern. “The sailor’s killed plenty of terrible monsters. He can handle a Lizalfos.”

“Well first of all, when the Shadow looked like a Lizalfos, it stomped on him. Twice.” Warriors ran a hand through his hair. “And I more meant the emotional pain of having to kill his beloved pet.”

Time’s face darkened. “I had to do that once. A little dragon I…” He shook his head. “Well, we will just have to spare the Sailor if that happens. But I think Greg is perfectly happy as he is.”

Greg had closed its eyes, making tiny whistling snores. Wind laid him down, but Greg clung to his shirt, whining slightly until Wind dramatically rolled his eyes and kept holding him.

Warriors looked at Time. “So you… had a pet dragon?”

“Yes.” Time sagged. “His name was Volvagia. A sweet little thing, but during my quest I had to leave him behind and… well, Ganondorf got to him.”

“Volga?”

“No, Volvagia.”

“... I knew a dragon named Volga.” Warriors shook his head. “He worked for… for the other side of the war. But in the end, he rejected their aid and fought on his own terms. Perhaps he is related.”

“Was he a big dragon?”

“Well, when he was in dragon form he was… I dunno. About as tall as that tree?”

Time bit his lip. “‘In dragon form’? Wouldn’t… all his forms be dragon forms?”

Warriors gave a little shrug. “Sometimes he looked human.”

Time looked back at Wind, who was trying to teach Greg to walk on his back legs while Wild and Hyrule cheered him on. “So… so you’re saying I thought I had killed my friend… but I might have actually made him… a dude?” He looked pained. “Is this what the Champion meant when he asked how I would feel if Epona might just be ‘some lady?’ If the Sailor keeps raising Greg is he going to turn into a man?!”
