Dear Gus & Magnus,
There are homeless people who live in the woods around our office. They dig through our outdoor ash tray for discarded cigarette butts and things like that. We're mostly cool with it, but I don't like it when they trash up the parking lot. Or the woods. And this weekend we caught a woman on our cameras stealing our door mats, which was a bridge too far. Shannon called the cops, who mostly said there's not much they can do. I asked if we could go retrieve our doormat. The cop said we could and that he would go with us.
We found the mat in a woman's tent and decided we didn't want it back. I've wanted to come out here for months to see what the encampment looks like, so this was a highly satisfying exercise. And, honestly, other than all the trash and complete disrespect for nature, it was really peaceful out there.
When I told Mom we'd gone out there, she said, "Please don't become a target."
Dad.
