Ladybug and Chat Noir stood together, hand in hand, in front of the Miraculers.
"What are we doing back here in the abandoned tunnels?"
"Are we doing more training?"
"No, there's no akuma," Chat Noir reassured the team. "But we will be doing some new training. Kinda."
Ladybug took a step forward. "We've managed to learn something about the new butterfly holder. They seem to have inherited not just Monarch's miraculous, but his secrets. This puts any members of the team whose identities Monarch learned in a highly precarious position. While I think I know which identities were leaked to him, I cannot be certain that I caught them all, nor whether the new butterfly holder has managed to dig up more identities on their own. Chat and I have talked it over and we've decided that it will be necessary for everyone to give up their miraculouses."
"Please! I don't want to stop being a superhero!"
Ladybug held up a hand. "I have every intention of this change being a temporary measure--as soon as we believe we have convinced the butterfly holder that they cannot trust Monarch's information, you'll be able to reunite with your kwamis. I will provide you with decoy jewelry matching your miraculous' camouflaged forms to further obfuscate your identities. Also, there are certain Miraculers who we feel are particular assets to the team that we cannot give up so easily, so we will be reassigning them to a different miraculous. We will let you know who you are individually and hope that you will use the opportunity to better understand the other powers we have on the team."
Chat Noir and Ladybug exchanged a glance with each other. In actuality, nearly all of the Miraculers would be sticking around after all this, just wearing a new mask. They'd spent the better part of the afternoon debating who would switch to what miraculous and were pretty satisfied with the results.
Except for... the only two heroes would actually be stepping down.
Chat Noir squeezed Ladybug's hand. "My lady and I have decided that it is not fair to ask this of so many of you without being affected ourselves. Therefore, once all of the reassignments have been made, we will both be giving up our miraculouses."
"Who could possibly lead us!"
"I will find someone suitable for Chat Noir's ring," Ladybug promised.
"And I have someone in mind who will be perfect for Ladybug's earrings," Chat added.
"We will make sure to keep in close contact with our replacements and with all of you. You are all so important to us and to all of Paris, and though we may need to hide in the shadows, we will always support you."
Redistributing all the miraculouses took a while, but eventually each of the kwamis had been taken to their temporary homes. Finally, there were only two heroes remaining.
They held each other in their arms, neither wanting to let go. Eventually, they had to.
Hiding on opposite sides of the sewer wall, they let down their transformations. They held out their precious jewels to each other and made the exchange. They squeezed each others' hand. Promised to return them safely. And then, they were gone.
Adrien looked out his bedroom window and sighed. At least he wasn't trapped in the mansion anymore, but it still didn't feel right being here like this. Not without Plagg's constant presence at his side.
He caught a glimpse of black on the skyline. As the shadow grew closer, he realized he recognized it: Lady Noire. She must be on her way to the guy who she'd chosen as his replacement. He hoped that whoever she'd picked would be someone who deserved his lady's trust.
Adrien turned away, not wanting to get any hint of where the new black cat holder lived. He breathed in and out. He could handle this, letting go the one thing that felt like it gave him an actual purpose in life. He had to.
A knock tapped at the window.
Adrien turned to see what was causing it and... it was her.
"Hey, Adrien!" Lady Noire said, waving with the biggest smile on her face. "Can I come in? I have a ginormous favor to ask you!"
Lady Noire gave a similar spiel to the one she'd given him before he'd become Aspik, this time with extra encouragement that--even though last time had been a disaster--she knew he was exactly the right sort of person who could be trusted to wield the forces of Destruction.
Adrien closed his eyes and slipped off the replica silver ring he'd borrowed from Felix and had been planning to wear for the near future--now, no longer necessary. He held out his hand and, after seeing the light of her detransformation flash across his closed eyelids, he felt the familiar jewel slip onto his finger.
He focused. Then, he spoke the words. "Plagg, claws out!"
"Oh!" the girl who once was Ladybug yelped. "It's you!"
Catwalker smiled. "It was a pleasure to meet you again."
After helping his lady escape back to the street, his eyes closed all the while, Adrien was feeling more confident about this plan. Chat Noir would be able to stick around, not that anyone knew it was him.
Now, all he had to do was approach his new partner, the one who would wield the ladybug miraculous.
There wasn't a doubt in his mind who he wanted it to be.
Mister Bug tapped on Marinette's balcony door. A moment later, the girl he loved with his entire heart and soul appeared.
"Uhh... what are you doing here?"
Mister Bug for the first time was glad that Multimouse had been prematurely retired--she wasn't one of the heroes affected by the miraculous rearranging, so she was perfectly free to take up the mantle once held by Ladybug.
Marinette protested. She was 'madly clumsy' and 'not cut out for this' and 'a walking disaster waiting to happen'. He refuted her every claim--she was brave and brilliant and quite possibly the only person he knew who came anywhere close to the person he knew Ladybug to be. She was perfect. And, he promised, she'd have a purr-fect partner by her side the entire time.
Eventually, he managed to persuade her to at least consider the offer. He left the earrings in her care, telling her where to go to meet up with the boy Ladybug had selected to be her partner. He snuck away from Marinette's home and, at the first opportunity, transformed into his Catwalker persona and headed for the rendezvous point.
Hours later, long enough that Catwalker was starting to wonder if Marinette really wasn't coming, he heard a pair of feet lightly hit the roof behind him.
He turned and saw the most beautiful princess in all the world. Unlike Ladybug, this girl wore pink and hearts and her suit sparkled like glitter. Her hair was down, the wind blowing gently through it and making the strands around her cheeks curl. And on her face was a smile of pure delighted joy that no one--least of all him--could fail to fall in love with.
"Are you the new Chat Noir?" she asked, the edge of her mouth quirking upwards. Almost like she suspected that her boyfriend lurked behind the mask--though, of course, she couldn't possibly have known.
"Yes," he replied, giving a princely bow. "I'm Catwalker."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Catwalker." She took his hand and placed a gentle kiss on the back of it. "I'm Loveybug."
