R.I.P, Abuelita Ana Ferrand. Many humans go on living without ever experiencing love. As many family members have already pointed out, Grandma made the best flan, and her natural sense of humor would make the most uptight ass crack up insanely. Grandma poured honey all over the house to make my cousin a sweeter person; Grandma brought the fire extinguisher whenever we engaged in a heated argument at home (if you are a Cuban, you know we fight until death). Two years ago, I came out to her on her 90th birthday and after having introduced her to my first ever partner, she said, “Me encantan los patos—son mis animales favoritos; no pun intended!” When she left Cuba, she gave mom and dad everything she owned including the Colonial house where I grew up. I just wish that her spirit watches over me and bestows upon me her immense, boundless capacity for love. Abuela Ana didn’t love people because they deserved it; she simply loved them in spite of themselves. Edited with: @carbonblackandwhite
