A plain shot, but an exceptional Victorian gothic revival building. I am prompted to post the University of Glasgow by the obits this week of architectural historian and critic, Gavin Stamp. For many years Professor of Architectural History at the Glasgow School of Art, he was a promoter of Alexander (Greek) Thomson’s work and also wrote a biography of George Gilbert Scott who was the architect of this building and many others in UK cities. I have featured a few from both architects in my posts, and Scotland in particular is fortunate to have inherited some magnificent buildings, though it did not always care for them well. Stamp wrote for Private Eye as Piloti, and was instrumental is saving some of the best of Britain’s architectural heritage. Edinburgh Castle is celebrating St Andrew’s Day with a Saltire projected onto the rock. One year ago the idea was rejected too “political”. Also projected tonight is a short film with a series of messages aimed at inspiring the public to #BeLikeStAndrew . After a dreich start, sunrise in Edinburgh was briefly special. This is the Castle esplanade with Ramsay Garden and the gothic spire of the Hub on the left, formerly a Pugin designed Church. The sky was a surprise but lasted only minutes. Edinburgh's West End facing the late afternoon sun. It is more than 2 years since I pictured this street and this is now Charlotte Baptist Chapel, formerly St George's West. Between its opening in 1869 - following the Church of Scotland Disruption of 1843 -and until reunification in 1929, it was St George’s free Church. The way in which congregations have moved around Edinburgh’s West End over the last couple of centuries is fascinating. The 56 metre bell tower designed by Edinburgh’s Sir Robert Rowand Anderson was based on St Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Hard to believe that Edinburgh was like this first thing this morning, bathed in a warm dappled light. I know the Scott Monument is much photographed, but I haven’t posted it from this side. The monument was completed in 1844 and Scott is in white Carrara marble with his dog, Maida at his side. In total the monument depicts 93 people or literary characters, two dogs and a pig.
