@Regranned from @princearchives - Happy Birthday to one of Prince’s closest collaborators and source of inspiration, Sheila E. Sheila was already a successful percussionist by the time she met Prince, having toured with acts including Herbie Hancock, Diana Ross, and Marvin Gaye. Although they met in 1978, her collaboration with Prince began in 1983 and lasted throughout his lifetime. They began working together during the Purple Rain sessions. Her vocals can be heard on “Erotic City.” Prince then co-wrote and produced her first two albums and biggest singles, “Glamorous Life” and “Love Bizarre.” Sheila continued to tour with Prince to promote his next several albums and eventually became the band’s musical director. Sheila E. has admitted in recent interviews that she and Prince were briefly engaged. Although Sheila officially left Prince’s band in 1989, the two continued to collaborate throughout his career.
