It was wild to think the yesterday in her memory was sixty-five years ago. the cook, the few diner patrons and herself lined up with their hands behind their head and back to local police and military as they commanded them to stay where they were, screamed at like criminals while the blue smoke from the mysterious bomb subsided.
no one understood what was going on or what the diner had been hit with. but from what ella could gather amongst the chaos was that they weren’t either, and worried it was a biohazard that needed to be contained.
MAY 14TH, 1947, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
and then it all went dark.
LATE 2012, MANHATTEN, NEW YORK.
“ we’ve got brain function ! give her more oxygen. “ a loud ringing in her ear alerting the waitress while she dipped in and out of consciousness, bright lights and shadowed figures crowded around her nearly lifeless body on a surgical table.
“ welcome to the twenty-first century. “
the entire first week of being unthawed was full of so many new things and surprises...and a lot of physical therapy. your body being frozen for sixty-five years made you have to strengthen things you hadn’t used in a while, apparently. but those words stuck with her, the shock of it all. though she passed each phase of her integration and recovery so far with flying colors.. she just still couldn’t believe it.
out of everyone else who had apparently been frozen alongside her to contain what they feared was a biohazard, ellanor was the only one to survive and able to cope with the news.
she was alive..so the only logical thing to do was to move forward. there wasn’t much choice. It seemed everyone here at the S.H.I.E.L.D medical wing was counting on it.. and she was too afraid to let them down.
there was just a lot of catching up to do. while she rested and they monitored her, the television was her best friend. eyes lighting up with such wonder and piles of new snacks on a cart by her bedside.
“ well I think it’s very sweet you’re here to see her. “ ella’s main nurse katie whispered just outside her door to the man, the two of them just out of sight.
the current open bag of snacks was skittles, ellanor shaking them into her palm while her gaze glued to the sight of man landing on the moon. “ oh my days, katie ! we went to the moon !“
the blonde smiled softly, chuckling under her breath and leaning to project her voice loud enough for her to hear. “ yup, we sure did. we’ve got a rover on mars now, too. “
“ what’s a rover ? “ ella asked.
“ you’ll get there. “ katie responded.
shaking her head while she held ella’s medical chart to her chest. “ it’s actually perfect that you’re here. 2e were planning on letting her outside for a walk today. I think it would be best if you took her.” if her vitals were fine after the shock.
katie turned to walk into her room now, putting the chart back at the end of her bed and adjusting some things, inhaling deeply with her hands on the edge of her bedside. but she looked a tad choked up. “ so.. ella, um. you actually have a visitor if that’s alright. Is it okay if he comes in? “
the last skittle was put in her mouth when she paused, staring at her nurse in confusion for a moment before continuing to chew and swallow the last bit of her candy. “ .....really ? “ perplexed, she paused the tv, pushing her cart away and smoothing down her new hairstyle her nurse had helped her with. simple and straight, it was pretty.
adjusting her cardigan, she sat up, pulling at her hospital gown and craning her neck as if that would make whoever hadn’t appeared yet appear.
her nurse began to leave the room, patting his shoulder on the way out to give them some privacy.
“ well hold on--who is it ? “ but it was too late, she was already gone.
the sudden sight took her breath away. wide eyes quickly turned glassy while the tears welled up, the hand that had at some point lifted to her mouth dropping to her chest.
one of the biggest things to break her heart. the death of one of her dearest friends and attending his funeral. yet here he was in the flesh. it broke her heart all over again. was it really him ? was this a test ?
“....bucky ? “ she asked just barely above a whisper, like speaking too loud would make him disappear into thin air. but let it be true. just let her have one thing in this terrifying uncertain future.
tears began spilling down her cheeks from crinkled eyes, the former waitress unable to help herself from laughing and crying, fingers trembling. the only valid response to this confusion. perhaps it was just everything at once spilling over.
all of those letters she had sent him during the war. all the things they had planned to do when he returned to celebrate. oh please let it be true.
