Modern science is discovering massive landmasses beneath the ocean. Could they prove the ancient myths? 🗺️

Scientists have discovered that several ancient landmasses lie submerged beneath the Earth's oceans. While these geological discoveries have fundamentally changed our understanding of the planet’s history, they have also reignited debates among alternative historians who see them as potential evidence for legendary lost continents like Lemuria, Mu, and Atlantis. 🌊

Most of us are familiar with these legends. According to various esoteric texts and folklore, the Earth was once home to massive continents that have since disappeared. One of these is Lemuria, a hypothetical landmass that some 19th-century theories claimed stretched from India to Australia. Like Atlantis, Lemuria was said to have vanished beneath the waves tens of thousands of years ago.

The concept originated in 1864, when British zoologist Philip Sclater published an article titled "The Mammals of Madagascar." He noticed that lemur fossils were abundant in Madagascar and India but entirely absent in Africa and the Middle East. To explain this, he proposed that India and Madagascar were once connected by a lost continent he named "Lemuria."

While modern plate tectonics later explained these fossil connections without needing a lost continent, recent geological research has indeed proven that massive landmasses can sit underwater. For instance, geologists recently mapped Zealandia, a submerged continent of about five million square kilometers in the South Pacific. Today, only about 5% of it is visible, forming New Zealand and New Caledonia. Zealandia was not lost to a sudden cataclysm, but rather submerged gradually due to tectonic shifts over millions of years. 🌋

Similarly, other historical structures are often cited by alternative researchers. Between India and Sri Lanka lies Adam’s Bridge (or Rama Setu), a chain of limestone shoals. According to Hindu tradition and the epic Ramayana, this formation is the remnant of a bridge built by Lord Rama to rescue his wife, Sita. While some independent researchers and alternative authors argue the structure shows signs of artificial origin, mainstream geologists maintain it is a natural tombolo formed by wave action and sediment deposition.

Further south, in the Indian Ocean, scientists recently discovered traces of Mauritia, a prehistoric microcontinent buried beneath Mauritius. Geologists found three-billion-year-old zircon crystals in young volcanic rocks, proving that a fragment of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana had sunk into the ocean.

In Tamil tradition, these ideas resonate deeply with the legend of Kumari Kandam, a mythical sunken continent said to have existed south of modern-day India. Because Tamil culture is one of the oldest in the world, some scholars suggest that these legends might preserve a cultural memory of rising sea levels. At the end of the last Ice Age, around 15,000 years ago, sea levels were over 100 meters lower than today, and the melting glaciers undoubtedly swallowed vast coastal civilizations. 🏛️
