#lost princess

I saw a TikTok of a Princess being burned at the stake with a Jester because they had fallen in love and the Prince she was married to had her and him burned for her infidelity. The Princess and Prince were in a loveless political marriage.

The priests were wrong, as they often are. Magic did exist in their world. The queen, belly swollen with the child of her true love, watched as her love, beaten and battered, smiled at her for the last time as the flames licked at his feet. Her own pain not registering as she watched her love smile at her for the last time.

They did not know that the Gods were watching and they were disturbed by what their followers had done in their name. One villager who had stayed, cried for the couple. This one villager believed love should have no status, no limits and no borders, stayed and wept for the couple. She wept for her queen, she wept for the love that shown in the jester’s face even as he was burned alive. Wept for the unborn child. When she had cried herself dry, her throat raw and near bleeding and her father had come to find her, that is when she heard the sound. Barely there. A cry. A coo. Coming from the burned alter of the queen. 

The villager moved without thought to the rubble and ash. Ignoring her father’s pleas and the stares of a growing crowd. Moving the chard beam that held the queen’s shriveled body hostage she saw what had made the sound. A baby. A beautiful baby girl blanketed by the ashes of her mother.

The Gods were pleased, it seemed, with who found the baby they had saved. They placed their blessing upon the woman in hopes she would keep the child. 

With whispers from the wind in her ear the woman fled. No guard was able to capture her. Her feet were sure and no path was hidden from her sight. She ran far, farther than she had ever ran before. Her legs felt no pain nor fatigue. Her lungs stayed full of air. She did not hunger.

He was a shepherd. He shepherded stars. He was to put them where the Man in the Moon said. He knew. Jack knew. But the she was lost. And weren’t stars meant to guide lost princesses home?

And the funny thing is, both of them actually ended up being a princess/prince.
