AN: Running a prompt meme on CFAA and wrote a little something as a warm up for it :) Sub Diego is good btw
Lorena floated in the water, letting herself drift in the currents as sunbeams filtered down through the waves overhead and fish swam around her. Like this, it was easy for appreciate the beauty of the water. If she didn't think too hard, if she just let herself be carried along, she could love her new home. Unfortunately, she was the restless type.
All to soon, she couldn't keep herself still anymore. Making a couple of loops in the water, she started to swim back down to Sub Diego proper down below.
Back before, when she still lived and breathed on the surface, she'd got to the beach with her parents and they would lie around, enjoying the sun while she ran here there and everywhere with her friends. Once upon a time, she'd charged into the waves again and again, reveling in the excitement, the joy of the water splashing against her.
And then there had been the terror of that day at the zoo: the sudden rush of cold water, the force and the weight and the darkness. It would be easier, she thought, to accept it all if she could forget the fear.
Everything was much stiller down here now. The water gradually grew cooler, darker, and heavier as Lorena swam further and further from the surface. The transition was familiar now, but still not quite comfortable. Those first few weeks spent trapped in the heavy dark below still made her shiver. Compared to that, surfacing had been a rush of light and warmth before Aquaman had swept her away again.
Somewhere between the blinding light of above and the suffocating darkness of below was life now. She had a drowned apartment, both familiar and alien at the same time. So much darker than bright condo she'd lived in above, but cozy all the same. Home sweet home.
