Bonding over Metalslug
When I was younger I played a lot of Counterstrike. I was never good but there was something about play with other people that was exciting.  The game wasn’t hugely social since for the most part people weren’t using headphones at the time.  This really mostly lead to people only talking between matches or talking once they had died.  The game was supposed to be done cooperatively between members on a team but that never seemed to happen much.  Normally people were much more interested in killing the most people than accomplishing the goals.  The most that ever really happened was all agreeing to have a knife match which was when everyone wouldn’t use their guns and instead try to kill eachother with knives. Honestly it was hilarious to me as a kid everyone having their character jumping around and jabbing with their knives out.  I actually more enjoyed an offshoot of the game called Team Fortress which allowed for much more teamwork and conversation.  I can easily say I was addicted to the game for a long time. Â
My only other real experience with social video gaming happened at my friend’s house in high school.  She had two arcade games in her basement.  I believe it was Tekken 2 and Metalslug…. Im gonna guess 3?  I remember one day I stopped by her house and ran down to the basement cause that’s where my group of friends would hang out without her parents bothering us.  Instead I ran straight into her dad who had just started a game on Metalslug. I wasn’t straight at the time but I could tell right away that he wasn’t particularly straight at the moment either. I saw that he had just started and he mentioned that he had never beat the game before.  I immediately jumped into the game and told him, “Well today is the day you do!”  We spent about an hour and a half bonding and working together and I am very sure that he hated me until we beat that game together. Â
All that is to say that I don’t have much experience with social gaming, but just enough to know that I am missing out.  My roommate is a huge gamer and I constantly hear him chatting with his friends.  I admit sometimes I get jealous cause he really has built up some great friendships through social gaming.  He had one of his friends visit and stayed at our house that he had never met in person and the guy was great.  He mostly plays games that are very cooperative and open world which I respect. Jealous is the weird word to use since I could easily join in and play with him if I wanted (the article about libraries providing social gaming space, for it!).  I don’t think video games are below me when I hear him having a great time while I’m reading.  I don’t judge him for staying inside to play while I go out to concerts.  He is most likely being more social then I am.  I don’t think I am more cultured because I go to art museums since I think video games are most certainly art (even world of tanks I guess).  I’m just jealous because what he does sounds rewarding and awesome and I just happen to not particularly enjoy playing them.
