I have a headcanon that D-class personnel call each other by their names, not by their numbers, in everyday life, because why would they suddenly stop doing that? What, sir scientist, you need to dehumanize us and simplify accounting? Not me nor my homies give a fuck; my cell, my rules. And well, higher staff also don't care what the disposables do for fun with each other.
However! Numbers are also in use among the D-boys — as an insult, one that is not acceptable to throw around. In fact, it's a short and succinct way to say, "you're not a human being, unlike me; you know how they treat us, and you deserve every bit of it, personally". Sometimes you can still stay friends after that, but it's still an equivalent of a challenge to a duel, and if you use it lightly, you'll lose respect among all your cellmates, not only the one you insulted.
