“The Lokiarchaeota are part of a group called Archaea that have relatively simple cells lacking internal structures such as a nucleus. But the researchers found the Lokiarchaeota share with eukaryotes a significant number of genes, many with functions related to the cell membrane.”

In an article published in the journal "Nature", an international team of researchers described the discovery of new microbes that constitute a missing link in the evolution of complex cells, those of eukaryotes. They were called Lokiarchaeota because they were found in a hydrothermal vent in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean between Greenland and Norway called Loki's Castle.

Sono stati chiamati Lokiarchaeota perché trovati in una sorgente termale nelle profondità dell'Oceano Atlantico tra la Groenlandia e la Norvegia chiamata Loki's Castle.
