Language decline --- language attrition, bilingualism patterns in PPA,
Presentation: The Dynamics of Language Dominance in Bilingual Primary Progressive Aphasia : Preliminary Evidence
Summary:
Bilingual Language Profile Dominance changes in PPA (Spanish and Catalan
Directionality
More balanced vs less balanced
92% of participants experienced changes in their language dominance following symptom onset
55% became less balanced, with one language becoming even more dominant; 37% became more balanced in their dominance
Magnitude
Most individuals with PPA maintain relative stability in the magnitude of change in dominance index from before to after symptom onset
Even though most participants showed a difference in their dominance index from before to after symptom onset, most of these changes were relatively small (numerically)
2. Language Impairment Profiles in Confrontation Naming and Self-Report (Decline) from BLP
Parallel Decline/Naming Impairment (Comparing Spanish and Catalan)
55% Reported parallel decline on the BLP
61% showed parallel naming impairment on the MINT
When decline is asymmetric (MINT or BLP), the non-dominant language tends to be more affected
The strong alignment between BLP self-report of decline and objective testing supports patients’ insight into their language difficulties
These findings emphasize the importance of comprehensive assessment and adaptive therapy in both languages to tailor interventions for bilingual PPA patients
