Futoshiki vs. Sudoku: What’s the Difference and How Do You Play?

How to Read Futoshiki Inequality Signs
The inequality symbol always points toward the smaller number.
is correct because 2 is smaller than 4.

You can think of the open side of the symbol as facing the larger number.
When the cells are still empty, the sign gives you a relationship rather than an exact answer.
does not tell you the two numbers immediately.
It only tells you that whatever number goes in the first cell must be smaller than whatever number goes in the second.
How to Solve a 6x6 Futoshiki Puzzle
A 6x6 puzzle uses the numbers:
Each number must appear once in every row and once in every column.
Here are a few useful ways to begin.
Look for Rows With Several Numbers Already Filled
Suppose a row already contains:
Only one number is missing.
This is the same kind of elimination you might already use in Sudoku.
Suppose an empty cell must be greater than 5.
In a 6x6 puzzle, the only possible answer is 6.
Likewise, if a cell must be smaller than 2, the only possible answer is 1.

Never solve a cell using only one direction.
A number might fit the row but already appear somewhere else in the same column.
Before placing a number, check:
Does the number already appear in the row?
Does it already appear in the column?
Does it satisfy every nearby inequality sign?
All three conditions must work.
What Makes Futoshiki Feel Different From Sudoku?
“Where can this number go?”
Futoshiki frequently adds another question:
“How does this number compare with the cells beside it?”
That makes the puzzle feel more relational.
You are not only looking at individual numbers. You are also looking at the relationships between them.

Is Futoshiki Harder Than Sudoku?
It depends on the puzzle.
Both Futoshiki and Sudoku can range from beginner-friendly to extremely challenging.
