“ 𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐃 𝐎𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏, ” Saavik informed the commander, a bit of a defiant edge and she stood at his door with her arms folded across her chest. Her chin lifted to give off an impression of toughness, for the very last thing she wanted to admit was that she was scared. On Hellguard, admitting to fear and letting it show was practically a death sentence --- you had to be strong to survive. Why would it be any different here ?  If she told Commander Spock that she was frightened of the noises that she could not identify, of the unfamiliar darkness of her room, and that she’d never actually slept in a room by herself until a few days ago (always surrounded by the other kids in her survival pack) --- then maybe he would think less of her and deem her not worthy of his attention. “ It’s much colder than Hellguard and I’m not allowed to change the temperature in my room. So, I can’t sleep. ”  While it wasn’t a lie, it was far from a complete truth. Yet, it was going to have to suffice as explanation for why he had found her knocking on the door to his quarters this late.

“ 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐀𝐒 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐀 𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐑 𝐀𝐒 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐀 𝐒𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐒𝐓, 𝐁𝐀𝐁𝐘 𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑. ”   a gleeful look sparkled in her eye despite her attempts to combat the grin that wanted so badly to slip out. Michael’s hand rested on his shoulder, reaching past him for her mug so she could sip at her morning tea. “ Jim has practically spent the last two weeks here, and the days you’re not here --- you’re there. Down play it all you want, but it looks like things between you two are starting to get serious. ”  She did her sisterly duty, teasing him the right amount about his boyfriend --- but underneath it all she was nothing but thrilled for him. They’d both grown up so alone, she’d been lucky --- and their father’s connections had set her up somewhere early in her career where she’d been forced to expand her social circles; but Spock had been left alone as she did. She’s always been worried about him, it wasn’t until she had people in her life to love and care for that she realized how suffocating and lonely their life had been. So despite her digs and prods for catching his boyfriend spending the night --- Michael was just glad he was opening up more.

“ 𝐂𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐍 --- 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝐓𝐎 𝐁𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐁𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐇 𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘. ”  Saavik’s voice held a practiced and groomed Vulcan aloofness, despite the fact that addressing her adoptive father as anything other than as her father on the planet was a jarring experience. “ I trust you are recovering well then ?  I spoke to Doctor McCoy earlier today and he appears to have suffered no long term damage from holding your Katra. ” he was her father, he had died and she wasn’t allowed to address him as the relieved and grateful daughter she was --- but as a subordinate giving a report. It felt like a knife inside her heart. The Romulan in her wanted to scream, but the Vulcan won out. Her father needed the Vulcan more right now.

            She presses fingers to her temple as if to ease the growing pressure in her skull. It fails to help.    ❛ Don’t you think it’s a bit early for philosophy, Spock? ❜     Una laughs under her breath, once, in a single exhale of breath.    ❛ But congratulations: I think you may just have solved the entire conundrum of human existence. ❜

            She doesn’t mean to tease him — no, that’s a lie, she absolutely does. She’ll take the offered distraction from her early morning dullness and aching head. The coffee clasped tightly in her other hand ought to help as well. Somewhat against her better judgment, Una pushes aside the padd she’d been examining prior to his arrival. Though the padd yet lingers within reach, the gesture invites him to join her.
