Pre-HoT, the Commander's search for Aurene's egg meant they had to "abandon" Destiny's Edge and Trahearne. They deliberately prioritized a different task, one that they believed was more important, which led to their absence during the initial attack on Mordremoth and, indirectly, to people dying. To Trahearne and Eir dying.

I am not saying the Commander could have prevented anything. They may well have died in the crash. I am saying they probably feel intense guilt about it and wonder, to this day, if things could have gone any differently, had they stood side by side with the others.

Yes, they had to retrieve the egg. But also, Caithe did eventually bring it to Tarir's general vicinity on her own - perhaps the Exalted could have contacted her and convinced her to deliver the egg to safety. I can just see all these thoughts run through Commander's mind incessantly. It's downright torturous, especially if they were extra close to Trahearne.
