"Spring Thaw Near Klamath", 8" x 10" oil on gessoed hardboard 2019 I've been wanting to start a monthly challenge in the spirit of Inktober for the month of January. #januartree2020 (original name coined by @epooleart) was going to be a tree related painting or drawing every day, and I was planning to create a prompt list and everything! Instead, I've gotten swamped with freelance work for the month and am preparing work for a solo show I have going up on January 5th, so I think this isn't the right year to make it happen. I'll still try for at least a tree a week, though! Lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta, has a common name and scientific name that seem to contradict themselves. The common name would make you think it always grows straight and tall (well, 50 meters or 160 feet tall or so). The scientific name tells you that it grows contorted, but that actually applies to the pine needles. The little bundles of needles (they grow in twos) twist as they grow out giving it the contorted name. (And let’s not confuse it with the variety of lodgepole that grows along the west coast and can be quite twisted by the winds and weather. Ah, trees, you keep things interesting.)
Lodgepole pines are common throughout the Rocky Mountains but can also be found in the Cascades and other mountain ranges of the west coast. In fact, if you look hard enough, you can find an outcrop of them in Longmire, along the Trail of Shadows.
You wouldn’t expect to find such a sun-loving, shade-intolerant tree growing deep in the woods of the westside of the Cascade Mountains. A story is told that the seeds may have found their way here in some hay brought in for the horses of the old Longmire Springs hotel. True or not, the lodgepole pines have found their little place in the sun, right here in Longmire.
Next time you drive or ride through, stop and look for them near the start of the Trail of the Shadows. Not the tallest of trees, straight with thin, gray bark, and needles in bundles of 2 about 3 inches long. Like their common name, the lodgepole pines in Longmire grow very straight. Have you enjoyed the sight and smell of these pines? ~ams

These two shafts of light stopped me in my tracks while wandering through the Lodgepole Pines and Aspen in Island Park several weeks ago. They looked so resolutely defiant against the shadow that was slowly engulfing this little meadow as the sun set. . #lightandshadow #light #lodgepolepine #islandpark #idaho #idahoexplored #blackandwhite #post_evidence #flakphoto #foammagazine #aintbad #phroommagazine #humbleartsfoundation #photographmag #myfeatureshoot #fstopmagazine #somewheremagazine #pupilsphere #subjectivelyobjective #contextnotebook (at Island Park, Idaho) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1y41D4g0W3/?igshid=162s1gbc52rys
