Late-Night Drives & Mixtapes
Rodrick Heffley x Fem!Reader | Fluff | 1.2K words
The low rumble of Rodrickâs van was the only sound in the stillness of the night. The neon glow from passing streetlights cast fleeting shadows over his face, highlighting the sharp angles of his jaw and the way his fingers tapped restlessly against the steering wheel. You sat beside him, your legs tucked under you, basking in the comfortable silence that only came with being around him.
It was past midnight, and the world felt softer, slower, as Rodrick drove with no real destination in mind. The cool night air seeped through the cracked windows, carrying the scent of asphalt and pine. Your town always felt different at nightâquieter, almost like it belonged to just the two of you.
Rodrick exhaled through his nose, tapping the dashboard with his palm. âAlright, Y/N, serious question,â he said, his voice scratchy from a mix of exhaustion and whatever energy drink heâd chugged before picking you up. âIf you had to listen to only one band for the rest of your lifeâlike, no skips, no varietyâwho would it be?â
You hummed, pretending to give it deep thought. âLĂśded Diper, obviously.â
Rodrick groaned, dragging a hand down his face. âThat doesnât count. Youâre just saying that âcause you feel bad for us.â
âMaybe.â You grinned. âBut also, I like your music, okay? So sue me.â
He side-eyed you, lips twitching like he wanted to argue, but he didnât. Instead, he flicked on the stereo, and the van filled with the opening chords of a song you didnât recognize.
âWhatâs this?â you asked, shifting in your seat as the steady drumbeat kicked in.
Rodrick shrugged, gripping the wheel tighter. âJust a mix. Youâll like it.â
You didnât miss the way his knuckles flexed, how his knee bounced as if he was waiting for you to say something. His usual cocky attitude was nowhere to be foundâjust nerves, poorly hidden under the dim glow of the dashboard.
You leaned closer, letting the song wash over you. It was a mix of classic rock and some heavier alternative stuff, but then, a song that was unmistakably different played through the speakersâsomething softer, melodic, almost sweet.
You turned your head slowly. âRodrick⌠did you make this?â
He snorted. âWhat? A playlist? Yeah, Y/N, thatâs not exactly rocket science.â
âNo, I mean⌠for me?â
Rodrick drummed his fingers against the wheel, gaze fixed on the road ahead. âI dunno,â he muttered. âMaybe.â
A warmth spread through your chest, something soft and fluttery. You had known Rodrick for years, and despite his general âI donât careâ attitude, there were always these moments where heâd surprise youâwhere heâd let that tough exterior slip just enough to show the messy, endearing boy underneath.
âRodrick,â you pressed, smiling despite yourself. âDid you just make me a mixtape?â
âI didnât put it on a tape, did I?â He groaned, but you saw the tips of his ears go pink. âJustâugh, donât make it weird, okay?â
You let out a small laugh, watching as he shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He was so bad at thisâat being soft, at admitting when he did something thoughtfulâbut that just made it all the more endearing.
âI love it,â you said simply, because you did.
Rodrick peeked at you, and the tension in his shoulders eased, just a little. âYeah?â
âYeah.â
For a moment, there was nothing but the hum of the engine and the music filling the space between you. The city lights faded as Rodrick turned onto an empty backroad, the kind lined with trees where the only illumination came from the headlights slicing through the dark.
He ran a hand through his already-messy hair. âAlright, your turn. One band for lifeânot LĂśded Diper.â
You tapped your chin dramatically. âHmm⌠Nickelback.â
Rodrick gasped, swerving the van slightly. âTake that back.â
You cackled, throwing your head back. âMake me.â
Rodrick shot you a glare, but there was no real heat behind it. âYouâre lucky I donât pull over and leave your ass on the side of the road.â
âYou wouldnât dare,â you challenged, poking his arm. âYouâd miss me too much.â
Rodrick rolled his eyes. âWhatever.â But his grip on the wheel tightened, and there was something softer in the way he glanced at you, in the way his lips parted like he wanted to say something else but couldnât quite figure out how.
The mixtapeâhis mixtape for youâkept playing, the tracks bleeding into each other, each one carefully picked by him. It was so painfully obvious now, what this was. He hadnât just thrown together a bunch of songs he liked.
Heâd picked songs with meaning. Songs that told you things he didnât know how to say.
The van rolled to a stop at the edge of a hill that overlooked the town. It was a spot the two of you had come to before, but tonight, it felt different. The lights below twinkled like tiny stars, and for the first time in a while, everything felt⌠easy.
Rodrick leaned back in his seat, stretching his arms before resting one over the back of yours. He was pretending to be casual about it, but you could feel the warmth of his fingers, just barely brushing your shoulder.
âYou wanna know something?â he asked suddenly.
You turned to him, resting your cheek against the seat. âAlways.â
Rodrick licked his lips, drumming his fingers absentmindedly against the dashboard. âI, uh⌠I donât really do this. Like, the whole, yâknowâŚâ He waved a hand vaguely. âFeelings thing.â
âI never wouldâve guessed,â you teased.
He shot you a look. âIâm being serious.â
âI know,â you said, a little softer this time. âGo on.â
Rodrick exhaled sharply, like he was bracing himself. âI justâlook, I like having you around, okay?â He squirmed, like the words physically pained him. âAnd not in, like, a âyouâre cool to hang out withâ way, but in a âshit, I think about you all the time and itâs annoyingâ way.â
Your heart stuttered, heat creeping up your neck. âRodrickââ
âWait, Iâm not done,â he interrupted, squeezing his eyes shut for a second before forcing himself to look at you. âI made the dumb mixtape because every time I hear a song I like, I wonder if youâd like it. And I wanna know what you think about it, andâugh, this is so lame.â
You laughed, but it wasnât mockingâit was light, breathless, because God, he was a mess, and it was adorable.
âRodrick.â You reached over, slipping your fingers through his. His breath hitched, and he tensed, but he didnât pull away.
ââŚYeah?â
You squeezed his hand. âI think about you all the time, too.â
Rodrick blinked. âWait, seriously?â
You grinned. âYeah, idiot.â
For a second, all he did was stare at you like he couldnât quite believe what he was hearing. Then, with a sudden burst of confidence, he leaned in.
The kiss was quickâjust a hesitant brush of lips, warm and a little clumsyâbut it made your stomach flip all the same. When he pulled back, his cheeks were red, and he was trying so hard to act cool about it.
âWell,â he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. âThat wasnât terrible.â
You rolled your eyes and grabbed him by the collar, pulling him back in.
This time, he kissed you properly.
And if the mixtape continued playing softly in the background, with lyrics about love and late-night drives and stupid teenage feelingsâwell, neither of you were complaining.
hii! soo i have a rodrick heffley request! (sorry if it's a bit vague) also id prefer if they're fem-focused but if you wanna do gender neutral that's cool too
rodrick heffley x childhood next door neighbor reader troupe where:
reader has always had a crush on rodrick since they were kids and they used to be close to rodrick, but as they got older rodrick got a bit meaner and they distanced a little bit (still friends at school, just rarely visits)
reader still likes rodrick but he's so infatuated with heather hills that all they can do is hurt on the inside like HURTT like YEOWCH MY HEART type hurt
however, when reader and rodrick's family have a little neighborhood party they start talking more and rodrick starts to see reader as a romance-able option. like, wdym this hottie has been next door the entire time!
so now rodrick starts thinking about them more and getting more nervous around them but rodrick wants heather! right..??

Hii ! I tried my best to write this how you wanted, but again, I am new to writing. If this isn't what you were hoping for, I am so, so sorry! Xx
BACK TO YOU
Rodrick Heffley x Fem!reader
: ĚĚâ part 2
It was a warm Friday evening, mid-summer, and the Heffley family had decided to throw a small neighborhood party. You stood in your own backyard, glancing over at the bustling sceneâcolorful lights strung around the trees, laughter mingling with the scent of grilled burgers wafting through the air. Your heart ached at the thought of a certain heffley child, Rodrick Heffley, your childhood friend and long-time crush, socializing with his friends, all while seeming completely enthralled by the fact that Heather Hills was in his backyard and had even spoke to him.
You had known Rodrick for as long as you could remember. The two of you were inseparable as kids, your summers filled with bike rides, silly games, and dreams of becoming rock stars together. But as puberty hit, things began to change. Rodrick started hanging out with a different crowd, often acting like the cool, disinterested boy who had little time for anything other than his music and Heatherâs captivating smile. It hurt seeing him shift away from you, but you tried to respect his space, even if it felt like your heart was slowly crumbling into pieces.
The party was in full swing, and you debate whether or notyou should join in. Yes, you had received an invite to the get together, Mrs. Heffley knocking at your front door to do so and to make it known how much she missed having you around the house. However, it seemed awkward. You hadn't spoken to them in a while. Maybe you could just be a quiet observer, sipping lemonade and enjoying the glow of the festivities from a distance.
You glance around the party and caught sight of Rodrick, laughing with his friends, his signature smirk plastered on his face. As pride swells in your chest, a pang of longing follows closely behind.
âHey, you okay?â Your best friend waves her hand in front of your face, pulling you back to reality. âYouâve been staring at Rodrick for like, ten minutes.â
You shrug, forcing a laugh. âYeah, Iâm fine. Just thinkingâŚâ
âAbout him, right?â She raises an eyebrow, a teasing smile creeping onto her lips. âYou know heâs been crushing on Heather for ages, right?â
You nod, feeling the familiar sting of jealousy surge through you. âI know. It doesnât matter. Besides, weâre just friends now.â If even that anymore, you mentally scoff.
But deep down, the truth was hard to ignore. Every interaction you had with Rodrick was laced with an unrequited tension, one that left you feeling both hopeful and hopeless.
--
As the night continued, you finally decide to suck it up, push your nerves aside, and get a plate of food. You stroll towards the grill only to bump into Rodrick himself, carrying burgers and hot dogs, a look of surprise washing over his features. âOh, hey,â he says, running a hand through his messy hair.
âHey,â you manage, your voice faint.
A pause stretches between you, both of you searching for something to say. âDidnât expect to see you here,â Rodrick admits, glancing toward the large crowd of people in his yard before focusing back on you. âYouâve kinda been MIA lately.â
âYeah, I guess so.â You shift your weight from one foot to the other, suddenly feeling shy. âJust busy with school and stuff, you know?â
Rodrick chuckles, an easy sound. âItâs crazy how fast time flies, huh? We used to hang out every day.â
âI miss those days,â you find yourself saying, surprising both of you. âI miss you.â Why would you say that?, you groan internally.
His expression softens for a split second before he regains his composure, clearing his throat. âYeah, me too. But hey, did you hear about the new band Iâm working on? Itâs going to be sick!â
Your heart flutters at the mention of musicâthe one thing that always connected the two of you. âI didnât! Is it going well?â
As he launches into an excited explanation about practice sessions and his plans for the band, you can't help but get lost in the way his eyes light up when he talks about his passion. For a moment, all thoughts of Heather vanish from your mind.
Suddenly, Rodrick pauses mid-sentence, regarding you with a contemplative look, looking almost embarrassed. âYou, uh, actually want to hear this, right? I'm not boring you?â He asks, recalling just 20 minutes ago when he tried telling Heather Hills the exact same thing, before noticing how uninterested she looked.
âOf course I do!â You reply, genuine enthusiasm spilling from your lips. âYouâre talented, Rodrick. Iâve always admired that about you.â
He shifts closer, his demeanor changing from cocky to vulnerable as he studies you with newfound interest. âThanks. That means a lot coming from you. I mean, youâreâyouâre really cool.â
Your breath hitches, heart racing as he leans in slightly, the air thick with unspoken words. Just then, Heather appears, giggling as she joins Rodrickâs group, flashing him a big, fake, radiant smile. The spell broke, and you felt your heart sink once again.
âRodrick!â She calls, and you watch as he turns, momentarily captivated by her presence. You step back, heart aching, the tension from moments ago quickly dissipating into thin air.
Heather spares you a quick, bitchy glance, before grabbing Rodrick by the arm and whisking him away from you all over again.
The night wore on, and the party continued, but you found it harder to join in. Instead, you sat on the porch, watching the festivities unfold from a distance. Rodrick stole glances at you throughout the evening, but each time he seemed to hesitate, torn between the allure of Heather and the strange pull you had on him.
Eventually, your best friend found you sitting alone, leaning against the porch railing. âWhatâs wrong? Youâre missing out on all the fun!â
âI donât know,â you confess, feeling the weight of your emotions pressing down. âI just wish things were different.â
âDifferent how?â she probes, nudging your shoulder playfully.
âLike⌠I wish Rodrick could see me the way he sees Heather,â you murmur, fresh tears brimming in your eyes, quickly wiping them away in embarrassment.
"Hey," She whispers, voice softer than before. "You're amazing. I mean, like, 100 times better than Heather Hills." She scoffs, "If he can't see that, then he really doesn't deserve you.
You smile, leaning your head on her shoulder and looking out at everyone enjoying themselves.
--
After some time, your friend had left you and you hear footsteps approaching. Lifting your head from looking at your shoes, you seen it was Rodrick, walking toward you with purpose, the party background noise fading into nothingness. You blink, trying to make sense of the expression on his face.
âHey,â he starts, his voice quieter than usual. âCan we talk?â
âUh, sure,â you reply, your heart racing.
He leans against the railing beside you, stealing a glance toward the party and then back at you. âI, um⌠Iâve been thinking.â
âAbout what?â you ask carefully, hoping to mask the tremor of your voice.
âAbout you,â he admits, his cheeks slightly flushing. âI know Iâve been kind of a jerk and distant, but⌠I realized something tonight. Iâve been so focused on Heather that I didnât notice just how much I've missed you and how amazing you are.â
Your heart soars, but the fear of rejection lingers. âRodrick⌠youâve made it pretty clear how you feel about her.â
âYeah, butâŚâ he hesitates, searching your face for understanding. âI donât want to overlook someone whoâs always been there for me. Heather isn't you. Youâve been my neighbor since forever, my best friend, always stood by me... even when I treated you terrible. And tonight, it hit me that I like you⌠I-I've always liked you.â
The words hung heavy in the air, âYou like me?â you repeat, disbelief dancing in your voice.
âYeah. I do,â he confirms, a shy smile breaking through his earlier doubt. âI just didnât fully realize it till now.â
For a beat, silence envelopes you, a shared weight in the moment. âSo⌠what does that mean?â you ask, heart pounding.
âMaybe we could start again? Like, forget all the awkwardness and go for ice cream or something?â He rubs the back of his neck, a nervous habit you found endearing. "Or.. There's this concert Saturday night that I got tickets to. I, uh, was gonna invite a buddy from the band, but I'd, um, I'd rather go with you." He stutters nervously.
You felt giddy, disbelief slowly melting away. âIâd like that,â you whisper, unable to suppress the smile that's spreading across your face.
Rodrick grins, a boyish gleam returning to his eyes as he reaches out, intertwining your fingers. âGreat. I'll come get you at, like, 6 o'clock, Saturday..?âÂ
"Yeah, sounds good." you laugh, cheeks burning bright red and hands starting to clam up with nerves.
As the night continued, you and Rodrick hung out with his friends, cracking jokes in the Heffley's backyard. However, all you could think about was, what on earth were you gonna wear Saturday night?
Iâll keep you
