Design Tour: Flying Fox Vineyard & Winery

Victoria Pouncey and Beth Ann Kallen, the owners and design team at Folly, love a fun challenge. That’s what they got when they took on the task of designing the new Afton, Virginia Flying Fox Vineyard & Winery Tasting Room. “The owners, siblings George Hodson, Emily Pelton, Chloe Watkins and their spouses, were inspired by The Fantastic Mr. Fox and wanted to go with that quirky, world-traveler theme,” Pouncey shared. To that end, Pouncey and Kallen transformed the raw, former-industrial space into an inviting, sophisticated tasting room. Here, they take us on a tour of the Flying Fox.
This is first room that guests visit, and the owners wanted to make it a warm and inviting hang out space. "The large-scale antique map of London became the focal point of the room,” Pouncey says. “And since the parents are from London, it was the perfect homage.” The other maps in the room are of Nelson County, where the Flying Fox sits, and Jacksonville, FL, where the owners spent most of their childhood.
All of the leather throughout the tasting room is from Moore & Giles, including the red lampshades featured here. Red is an accent color throughout the space, tying into the Flying Fox logo and a key element in the wallpaper.

The wallpaper in the men’s room is a quirky surprise, featuring a jaunty fox in a red riding coat, and a direct reference to the Flying Fox logo.
The centerpiece of the main tasting room, where the wines are poured, is the unique round sofa from Century Furniture, with leather by Moore and Giles. The concrete floor and high ceilings maintain the industrial feel while the leather and natural wood accents lend a clubby, warm coziness, reminiscent of a London pub.

“The wallpaper in the entrance was a key element and a jumping off point for the design,” Pouncey shares. Showcasing fantastic flying machines that hover among the clouds, the design evokes the carefree, whimsical wonderful feeling the designers were going for.
Pop on over to Flying Fox to experience their marvelous space — and taste their lovely Virginia wines and vermouths for yourself.
