#loblolly pine

I went and sat under the elder cherry tree (Prunus serotina) this afternoon in an attempt to snap a shot of the view through the branches while seated on the ground. I took a little break last night and sat there under the cherry tree staring up at the nearly half a moon and enjoying the frigid air, but forgot my phone in the house. Last night was our first frost.

While seated under the tree this afternoon I glanced down at one of the larger roots and noted some resin. When I got up and searched the tree I found more.

The cherry tree resin was used by children as a sort of chewing gum. This resin was also used as a treatment for coughs, and when dissolved in wine, it was used to treat gallstones and kidney stones.

I tried chewing a bit and found the flavor pleasant, but the texture not so much.

Since I was nearby I stopped at the loblolly to check its resin, which is still abundant. This winter when other foraging is slowing down I may attempt some more salve.
