Loungin' Lizards
What would pectorals and abdominal muscles in humanoid reptile-people (and other non-mammalian humanoids) look like? Because when looking at the anatomy of fish, birds and reptiles human chest and belly muscles stand out as unique: only humans seem capable of getting "ripped", but I don't know if it's something unique to mammals or human anatomy specifically due to our evolutionary history.
I've got an alien species based on reptiles who like humans also evolved from tree-dwellers who eventually left the trees, which means that their anatomy is quite human-like:
Art is quite old. The red symbol on its chest is paint which in my head means that the individual depicted has completed their ritual of adulthood.
The human-like chest looks sexy but I'm not sure if it makes sense for my aliens, and other non-mammalian humanoids in fiction to have it.
I would be very happy if you could help me!
I managed to dig up one really useful resource for reptilian musculature!
The website of palaeontologist and artist Matt Dempsey
Matt Dempsey has lots of good artist references like this, I'm very glad to have found his site.
this underside view of a komodo dragon's musculature from his site does a great job of showing the pectoral muscle shapes
(image description: 3d model of a komodo dragon froom beneath, showing the muscle structure. The pectorals are longer than those of a human, having a more triangular shape that goes towards the belly. end description)
And yeah, probably a lizard would not get "buff" the way humans do, but even humans don't actually get chiseled muscle definition without some pretty extreme work. And quite often a serious case of dehydration. The chiseled muscle look is actually less durable than they look, all size and no real long term strength. But that's a rant for another post maybe lol.
I think the way you've drawn the musculature on your four armed lizard person looks pretty good! being bipedal, it makes sense their pectorals might start to look a little more humanoid, since the arms move very differently on an upright body than they do on a quadruped body.

If you’re a fan of scalies/lizard folk/kobolds, like I am perchance you’d be interested in reading a little story I made. It was highly inspired by “I married a lizardman” and it’s squeal “I married a naga”
Summary: Ariah is desperate to find a husband, but a lizard-snake man?? Never in Rafael's life would he consider bonding to a human. Together, they traverse being mates.
What kinds of temporary prostheses/mobility aids could be used by a lizardfolk/salamander-like alien race who *can* regenerate lost limbs, but only slowly and will have to need assistance for at least about two or three months while the new limb grows in?
since the limb is growing back, it certainly wouldn't do to have the prosthetic cover up the stump and block its growth. so they would probably invent hollow prosthetics instead! for weight bearing, and to prevent it from sliding around, it would need to be strapped around the body in a way that doesn't put too much strain on the healing limb.
(image description: sketch of a bipedal lizard person wearing prosthetics over one arm and one leg to cover them while they regrow. the prosthetics are sketched in red and have many straps keeping them attached to the body. end description)
they would also want a cane or crutch for a while if they're missing a leg. they could just opt for crutches or even a wheelchair and not use a prosthetic at all! missing arms also may not require a prosthetic. if they need extra protection from cuts and infection during the regrowth but they don't want a prosthetic, they could perhaps just wear a soft and stretchy material over the limb, like a real big sock. this would also help with temperature regulation, and it would be useful under a prosthetic for comfort reasons.
Commission for one of my DnD friends!
Thank you so much for commissioning me! Never drawn lizard folk or even dragonborn, but I felt like this came out decent! Enjoy ✨️
