the adventure capital of africa: livingstone is known as the adventure capital of africa due to the substantial number of adrenaline-inducing activities on offer, centred around the zambezi river and victoria falls. what livingstone has built over the past thirty years is genuine.

the activities: white-water rafting on the zambezi's batoka gorge rapids — grade 5, rated among the best commercial white-water in the world. bungee jumping from the victoria falls bridge — one of the highest commercial bungee jumps in the world, 111 metres above the zambezi. microlight and helicopter flights over the falls — the full 1,708-metre width revealed. sunset cruises upstream — elephant at the river's edge. devil's pool — the natural rock pool at the lip of the falls, accessible in low-water season, where swimmers look directly over the edge 108 metres below.

the bundu adventures model: bundu adventures has been offering adventure activities on the zambezi since 1996. zambian-owned operators who started with a raft and a permit and built businesses attracting visitors from europe, north america, and asia. no longer should livingstone be considered victoria falls' poor cousin.

the economic argument: tourism is zambia's most realistic near-term path to economic diversification away from copper. as much as 80% of zambia's export earnings come from copper. what has been built in livingstone — one raft, one bungee cord, one microlight flight at a time — is the proof of concept for what the northern circuit, the kafue, the lower zambezi, and the luangwa valley could also become. the template is here.

the record: zambia recorded 2,199,820 foreign arrivals in 2024 — a 35.3% increase on 2023, and nearly four times the 554,000 arrivals in 2021. between 65-70% of all 2024 arrivals landed in livingstone — between 1.43 and 1.54 million international visitors in a city of approximately 218,000 people. a ratio approaching 7 times its own population annually. hotels reporting 70% occupancy.

the visa waiver bet: the single most important policy decision behind the boom. visa waivers now extended to citizens of 167 countries. the logic: visitor spending would far exceed visa fee revenue foregone. the 35.3% single-year increase is the most direct evidence of what removing entry barriers to a genuinely attractive destination produces.

the KAZA univisa: allows visitors to move freely between zambia and zimbabwe on a single visa. livingstone's tourism product uses both sides of the zambezi. neither country can fully sell the product without the other.

the accommodation landscape: the radisson blu mosi-oa-tunya, the avani victoria falls resort, the protea hotel by marriott — international brands bringing global distribution. plus a strong mid-market and boutique sector: the river club, thorntree river lodge, sussi and chuma, waterberry lodge — intimacy, zambezi frontage, and specifically zambian character.

the beginning: before zambia was zambia, there was a crossing point on the zambezi. the old drift — a few kilometres above the falls — was where people crossed: first by dugout canoe, then by iron boat pulled by eight lozi paddlers, then by steel-cabled barge. by around 1897, a small british colonial outpost had grown up there — the first municipality in what would become zambia. mosquitoes ended that experiment. malaria killed enough settlers that the europeans moved to higher ground, and as that settlement grew into a town it took a name: livingstone.

the explorer: david livingstone reached the falls on 16 november 1855 — the first european to see mosi-oa-tunya from the zambian bank, shown there by local chiefs. what he did was document them for a european audience. the victoria falls railway bridge, completed in 1905, placed livingstone at the crossing point of one of colonial africa's most ambitious infrastructure projects.

the capital years (1907-1935): livingstone was the capital of northern rhodesia. of all the towns in northern rhodesia, colonial livingstone took on the most markedly british character — edwardian buildings lining the main street, deep racial segregation. in 1935, the capital moved to lusaka — closer to the copperbelt's economic heartland. but livingstone did not collapse. timber, hides, tobacco, and cotton continued. and the tourist trade became the city's new identity.

the independence era: zimbabwe's post-independence instability from the late 1990s onward was, paradoxically, good for livingstone — visitors who might have chosen zimbabwe's side of the falls began choosing zambia's. a genuine revival followed: new lodges along the zambezi, bungee jumping from the victoria falls bridge, white-water rafting, helicopter and microlight operators.

livingstone today: 177,393 people (2022 census). the livingstone museum — the oldest and largest in zambia — holding five galleries including the david livingstone memorabilia collection donated by the livingstone family.

livingstone is the only city in zambia retaining a non-african colonial name unchanged since independence — because kenneth kaunda, whose father was educated by the scottish missionaries who followed livingstone's footsteps, chose to leave it. the city carries an explorer's name across an independence he never lived to see.

victoria falls — the asset: at approximately 1,700m wide and more than 100m high, the world's largest curtain of falling water by the combined measure of width and height. UNESCO-designated mosi-oa-tunya national park on the zambian side, offering the more dramatic view of the main cascade and the knife-edge bridge.

livingstone's adventure tourism product: white-water rafting on the zambezi (rated among the best commercially rafted whitewater in the world), bungee jumping from the victoria falls bridge (111m — one of the highest commercial jumps in the world), helicopter and microlight flights, sunset river cruises, kayaking, elephant interactions, game drives.

the zambia-zimbabwe dynamic: zimbabwe's tourism infrastructure has traditionally been better developed. zimbabwe's recovery under mnangagwa has re-established the competitive dynamic. for livingstone's investors, the most important near-term question: can zambia's airlift improvement keep pace?

the airlift investment case: harry mwanga nkumbula international airport remains limited in direct international route connections. no direct route from london or any european gateway to livingstone. a visitor from london must fly via johannesburg or lusaka — typically 16-20 hours of travel time each way. every increase in visitor volume makes the direct airlift case stronger.

the livingstone investment opportunity: (1) mid-range accommodation between budget backpackers and ultra-premium lodges. (2) the activity operator sector — professionalising and scaling existing informal operators, particularly in community tourism. (3) the livingstone-lusaka-lower zambezi-kafue circuit: visitors who combine these parks get a wildlife experience competitive with tanzania's or kenya's classic circuits.

adventure tourism is livingstone's story. but livingstone is not zambia's tourism story. it is the entry point to a much larger wildlife and wilderness experience the world does not yet fully understand is there.
