I saved this newspaper ad for one of my first ever concerts: Danzig with Type O Negative (December ‘94). This was the 4p tour, and Danzig’s opening song was Brand New God. It was incredible. I’d never heard of Type O before the show, and they blew me away (Too Late: Frozen made me a convert on the spot).
I went to the men’s room after TON’s set, and then felt this huge presence towering over me while I was standing at the urinal. I turned my head and then looked up, then up, then up some more to finally lock eyes with Peter Steele (the only time I’ve intentionally made eye contact with another dude while urinating). I maintained the flow like a professional and kept my cool until everything was zipped up. We made our way to the sinks and I slipped in a “your band was awesome” type of comment. In response, Peter’s baritone voice filled the cavernous room with a message of gratitude. He shook my hand (his was so huge that his fingertips nearly reached my elbow), and took off into the crowd. I ran to the merch booth and bought a TON hat and Bloody Kisses CD. It was a good night.
Fun fact: the Danzig logo is upside down in this ad.
