The stationer's shop had gone completely still. The shopkeeper quietly locked the front door to keep the gathering crowd from pressing inside.
"Lay her here."
A blanket was folded beneath your head. Even unconscious, your hands remained tightly clasped over your chest, fingers digging into your own sleeves as though holding yourself together.
Your breathing came in quick, uneven gasps.
"...She's having a nightmare," the shopkeeper murmured.
Coco knelt a short distance away, worried.
"Shouldn't someone wake her?"
The elderly shopkeeper shook his head.
"Not like this."
Your lips moved.
"...I'm sorry..."
A whisper.
"...Please..."
Another.
"...I'll be good..."
The words barely carried across the room. Agott's brows knitted together.
"Who is she talking to?"
No one answered.
"...Don't lock..."
Your voice broke.
"...Please..."
The apprentices exchanged uneasy glances. These weren't random dreams. They sounded like pleas. Qifrey hadn't taken a single step toward you. His hands hung motionless at his sides.
He knew, with painful clarity, that if you woke to find him standing over you, it would almost certainly make things worse. So he stayed where he was. Far enough away that you might feel safe.
After several minutes, your eyelids fluttered. You woke with a sharp inhale. Your gaze darted wildly around the room.
People.
Too many people. You immediately scrambled backward until your back struck the wall. Your chest rose and fell rapidly. The old shopkeeper raised both hands.
"It's all right."
"No one will touch you."
Those words seemed to reach you. You stopped trying to retreat. Still trembling, you looked from face to face... Until your eyes landed on Qifrey again.
Your body froze.
Not because you recognized him. Because something deep inside you screamed that he was dangerous. You lowered your gaze immediately.
"...I'm sorry."
Your voice was hoarse.
"I...I bumped into you..."
The apology sounded automatic.
As though it had been repeated thousands of times before. Qifrey felt something tighten painfully in his chest.
"You don't need to apologize."
You flinched anyway.
The calmness of his voice didn't matter. Your body had already decided. The old jeweler hurried into the shop, breathless.
"There you are!"
The moment he saw you pale and shaking on the resting bed, his expression softened.
He didn't rush to embrace you. He remembered.
Instead, he stopped several feet away.
"...May I come closer?"
You looked at him.
After a long pause... You gave a tiny nod.
Only then did he kneel beside you, careful to leave space between you both.
"You gave us quite a scare."
You lowered your head.
"...I'm sorry."
He sighed gently.
"There it is again."
He smiled, though sadness lingered in his eyes.
"You apologize too much."
You didn't answer.
The apprentices watched the exchange in silence.
Tetia whispered,
"He asked permission..."
The jeweler nodded without looking at her.
"She doesn't like being touched."
"Never has, since she came here."
"If I need to hand her something, I place it on the table."
"If she's frightened, I don't corner her."
"I let her choose."
He glanced at you with quiet affection.
"Little by little, she's begun to trust people."
Then his eyes briefly met Qifrey's.
"...Today was the worst panic I've ever seen."
No accusation.
Just a simple observation. But it landed like one. Coco looked from the jeweler to her teacher. She had known Qifrey as a kind mentor, someone who protected children and taught them with patience.
Yet she couldn't reconcile that image with what she had just witnessed.... a stranger collapsing in terror at the mere sight of him. She didn't ask any questions. Not there.
Not while you were still shaking, clutching your own sleeves, whispering one last apology that no one had asked for.
The days after your collapse were quiet. The old jeweler insisted you take time to rest.
"You've been working too hard," he said gently.
You nodded, though you weren't sure that exhaustion alone explained the strange nausea that lingered every morning. The women who visited you pestered The village healer to check on you...So here is the village healer examining you with practiced care.
When they finished, they sat beside you with a warm smile.
"I have some news."
You waited silently.
"You're going to have a baby."
The words seemed to drift through the room without meaning.
"A...baby?"
The healer nodded.
"You're several weeks along."
You stared at your hands.
"I..."
Nothing came.
No joy.
No fear.
Just confusion.
"I don't remember..."
The healer's expression softened.
"It's ok .. you just have to remember today."
Tears welled in your eyes anyway.
"i don't know who... "
Your voice faltered.
"I don't know how..."
The healer reached for a chair instead of reaching for you, remembering your discomfort with touch.
"Listen to me."
"You are not to blame for what you cannot remember."
"You deserve kindness, whatever happened before is past..."
Those words broke something loose.
You cried.....not loudly, just quiet tears slipping down your face. The news spread through the small village. Not as gossip. As concern.
The baker began leaving an extra loaf thinking if you may come for errands to give you for your meals.
The florist sister who took walks with you tucked fresh flowers onto your windowsill every few days.
The jeweler shortened your working hours.
"No polishing fumes all day," he said with a smile. "Your little one will want a healthier mother than that."
For the first time in many months, people spoke to you about tomorrow instead of yesterday.
"Have you thought of names?"
"Would you like me to knit a blanket?"
"The baby will keep us all busy."
You didn't always know how to answer.
But sometimes... You found your hand resting unconsciously over your stomach.
Far away, concealed by magic beyond the village outskirts, Olruggio stood frozen.
"...No..."
His voice barely carried.
Qifrey looked toward the healer's cottage, his face unreadable. Olruggio's thoughts raced.
The timing.
The months.
The captivity.
A terrible possibility formed in his mind.
"If..."
He couldn't finish the sentence.
Neither of them could say aloud what they feared. If the child had been conceived while you were imprisoned, then it was another consequence of what had happened in that basement...... a life that began under circumstances neither you nor the child had chosen.
Qifrey closed his eyes.
There was no certainty.
Only questions that should never have existed.
Olruggio spoke again, his voice unsteady.
"...She doesn't even know."
Qifrey looked toward the cottage window.
Inside, you were sitting with the healer, listening as they explained what foods would help keep both you and the baby healthy.
You looked overwhelmed.
Lost.
But when the healer asked, "Would you like to hear the heartbeat next visit?"
You hesitated...
Then gave the smallest nod.
It wasn't happiness.
Not yet.
But it was the first decision about the future that anyone had seen you make. Outside, neither Qifrey nor Olruggio stepped forward.
Whatever the child's parentage, one truth was undeniable: you were finally surrounded by people who cared for your well-being without demanding anything in return, and that fragile chance to rebuild your life was something they had no right to take away again.
