Little Corella (Cacatua sanguinea Cacatuidae) So this happened today.. a brand new addition to our feathered deck visitors! I haven’t had a close-up look at one of these guys before. He(she?) is a type of cockatoo called a Little Corella. Little Corellas are unique in that they often indulge in an activity that is uncommon in the wild bird world — they like to play! For instance.. sometimes they slide down the steep roof on a house, fall off the edge and then fly back to the top to slide down again. Normally we have those much larger Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos .. (Cacatua galerita Cacatuidae) They’re the big white ones that most people are familiar with... like that one on the old TV show Baretta. They have that super loud raucous screech. They are also very gregarious, so they’re always in groups. A flock of hundreds of snow-white birds with pale-yellow crests can be a spectacular sight when seen in the distance, but up close their calls can be deafening.
