kingopain: I sometimes see well-intentioned exercises prescribed, but the attention to detail is missed. On my first visit with this athlete, I assessed his training program, and the exercise on the left, a form of cable cross-body chop, had been prescribed. The problem is this athlete had an ongoing issue with his T-spine which often had to be treated with manual therapy. If you pay attention to what his spine is doing in the region of the red arrow, you will see an inability to organize and stack the spine, and resist shearing across several segments. Further, the state of his pelvis below is not in a quality inverted T position, but instead tilted and dropped to the right, reducing the competency of the spine to align from below. The video on the right is a progressed and adjusted version of this exercise to a split stance rather than the 1/2 kneeling position after we worked to create the correct alignment of the spine with such a motion. Not yet perfect, but a much higher competency. The intention of a chopping movement is to place overload on the ability of the trunk to create a quality point of fixation with shoulder activation and as such, if the actual competency of the spine is lost, then the purpose of the exercise is lost as well.
