Litti Chokha: A Taste of Bihar’s Rustic Culinary Legacy
Litti Chokha isn’t just food—it’s a story. A culinary symbol of Bihari pride, this rustic dish made of whole wheat dough balls stuffed with sattu (roasted gram flour) and paired with smoky mashed vegetables like chokha (usually brinjal, tomato, or potato), has found its way from rural kitchens to metropolitan menus.
What makes Litti so special is its earthy preparation—traditionally cooked over cow dung cakes, and now often baked or pan-fried for urban kitchens. The filling is spiced with mustard oil, ajwain, ginger, and green chili, creating a robust flavor profile.
Chokha, on the other hand, balances the dryness of the Litti with its juicy, roasted, and mashed ingredients, seasoned simply with salt, mustard oil, and fresh herbs.
If you’ve never tried it before, or want to revisit this hearty dish, we suggest exploring the Litti Chokha recipe designed for modern kitchens while staying true to traditional roots.
✨ Experience the depth of Indian regional cuisine—one wholesome bite at a time.
What is Litti Chokha and How is it Made?
Litti Chokha is a traditional dish from Bihar that has gained popularity across India for its smoky flavors, wholesome ingredients, and rustic appeal. This dish consists of Litti (whole wheat balls stuffed with spiced sattu) and Chokha (a mashed vegetable side made with roasted eggplant, tomatoes, and garlic).
Why is Litti Chokha a Must-Try Dish?
Protein-Packed & Wholesome – The stuffing is made from sattu (roasted gram flour), a powerhouse of protein and fiber.
Smoky & Earthy Flavors – Traditional littis are roasted over coal or baked, giving them an irresistible smoky taste.

Long Post Alert Okay there's a funny story behind this Bihar's special delicacy😁 We, @richi_gladiston & I never had Litti Chokha ever before. Of course, we knew it as -The very demanding cuisine of Bihar but nothing extensively So, as usual, I was just going through the feeds & found a video of Litti Chokha Recipe and surprisingly I liked it so immediately decided to give it a try on this weekend. Now, as soon as I prepared the chokha don't know how come, my all excitement just got faded away in seconds😂 because one thing that started to disturb me was -how come Chokha is not supposed to be cooked [Though it was roasted]😅 Anyway, somehow I got the courage to proceed further and prepared the dough for Litti & Sattu to stuff in it [not too much because I had second thoughts in my mind already 🤫]. And of course aise karte karte Litti bhi ready ho gai 😬 So here comes the final cooking part- cook Litti in appam maker & once it's ready, dip it in clarified butter and serve hot with Chokha, onion rings & lemon wedges. The funniest part of this story- the moment we had our first bite, trust me we couldn't believe that a partially cooked dish (Chokha) could taste this much better with Litti. Now the thing is - bana to tasty hai, hame to kafi accha laga but compare kaise kare ki aisa hi banta ha ya koi feedback bhi hai? 😂😆 P.S: We didn't add raw mustard oil in Chokha & Sattu as we don't prefer it that way. ❓: Litti Chokha served with Onion rings & Lemon wedges. 👩🍳: @bliss_bharvi 📍: #homesweethome #litti #chokha #indianfood #easternindia #bihar #foodporn #yum #instafood #yummy #indianfoodie #instagood #photooftheday #breakfast #tasty #blogger #delish #delicious #eating #foodpic #delhi #eat #hungry #foodgasm #hot #foodblogger #lockdown #quarantine #homemade #dilli_k_2_foodie (at New Delhi) https://www.instagram.com/p/CC0O4iuFdLL/?igshid=132ichj6d2p3x
