This stuff is all canon, but it is necessary to establish this au.

Envy demons are fairly rare, yet they are incredibly powerful. They seek out mortals of significant renown and power and take steps to become them. They may spend weeks studying their target in order to learn the how to act in this new role. After they gain enough knowledge, they “usually leave the poor soul to rot.” I interpret this to mean that the demon takes over the host body and abandons the host’s soul instead of disposing the body, but Lord Seeker Lucius uses the demon differently. Despite their strength, they are notoriously cowardly and will abandon the body they're in if found out, hiding behind magical barriers. These creatures are never satisfied and always seek out new targets. Once they set their sights on a new person, they jump from body to body and the cycle starts anew. It’s during this transition that they are weakest.

Our Envy demon follows the basic structure as well with one exception. Lord Seeker Lucius stays in Caer Oswin while Envy remains in Theirinfal Redoubt with the Templars. Lucius even has a replica of his ceremonial armor made for Envy in order to convince his subordinates of the farce. This may be due to the fact that he willingly cooperated with the demon and utilized it as a pawn for his own purposes, but regardless, there are two bodies. I’d say this is an exception rather than the rule, but this is the only incarnation of the Envy demon do far in the series, so I cannot say for sure. 

Envy eventually grows dissatisfied with wearing the Lord Seeker’s face and sets its sights on the Herald when it sees how many influential families walked with the Inquisitor to the fortress. It gains information about the Inquisitor by inviting them to Theirinfal. By asking them to raise the banners to learn their values, ordering the Templars to attack them to discover their fighting style, and finally pulling them into their own mind and gaging their reactions, Envy learns more about the Herald. It’s plan fails however, when a spirit of Compassion comes to help. Cole instructs the Herald to keep moving upwards because they’re more “themselves” there.
