Head of a Woman, 1935, bronze

Baxt: Photography Project by Andrew Miksys About Lithuanian Roma
de-gendered lithuanian speech encountered today on the bus (in reference to myself no less). i will be riding this high possibly until i'm done with this degree
Hi, I discovered the show only recently and it seems really cool! I have a question that you might have anwered before, but was Jogailla's name inspired by the Lithuanian duke/Polish king also named Jogaila? I'm Polish myself so it immediately jumpt out when I was watching the first episode ha, wishing much luck with the second episode!
Hello ! Yes you're the second person to have caught on. And the Second person that's polish in fact haha. Thanks for watching the pilot and thank you for your support regarding episode 2.
For folks who don't know....
Jogailla's name is in reference / inspired by Jogaila the Grand Duke of Lithuania who ruled in the late 1300s and also became King of Poland where he changed his name to Władysław II Jagiełło and converted the Pagan folk of Lithuania to Christianity through unifying with Poland.
My husband is Lithuanian and in learning from him and my in laws I wanted to showcase a bit of Baltic/ Eastern European identity that we don't really see showcased. We see Vampires from Romania etc all the time in the mainstream vampire mythos... So I wanted to intentionally be specific by 1. Having more black vampires obviously and 2. Showcase a vampire from a small European nation not many know about and highlight a bit of that culture .
To some Lithuanian people Jogaila is considered a little controversial in history. ( from speaking to my family about it and research and their words ) as the Lithuanian folks at the time as mentioned were pagan and were kinda just vibing doing that before Jogaila made everyone convert ..many unknowingly.
Jogailla's name is intentional. It's his heritage, a hint at his origin and to the path he'll take later in the story.
