"We may also share a sense of freedom in wearing clothing of choice, the ability to experience psychologically satisfying sexual interaction for the first time, being recognized at last as a member of the gender category in which we feel most comfortable, and the sense of doing something for ourselves rather than always trying to please others.
It is this euphoria, self-interest, or self-satisfaction that leads others to criticize us for being horribly self-centered. Many of us have spent much of our pretransition lives trying to please others in order to fit in or to compensate for our own internalized sense of incompleteness or inappropriateness, so accusations of self-centeredness seem doubly wounding, surrounded as we are in the US with meta-messages about the positive ramifications of self-indulgence.
The cisgender general public hears Be all you can be, but trans people hear, "How could you do this to me?" Indulge yourself. "You only think about yourself. Take your time; get away; enjoy; make the most of your life. "How could you be so selfish?" Live free or die. "How could you? How could you?"
Indignation, disgust, contempt, or disappointment burst through these simple words. They are intended as a slap across the face, a punch to the vital organs."

I'm struggling to articulate this right but to me, Mack/Will, Mack is like - it's not that he doesn't like Will, but a lot of it comes from what Will represents. Like this is his league-assigned rookie to be codependent with, he's been looking forward to that for years! He's a bit older and not necessarily easy to please, so bonus father points! He's pretty and blond and willing to do a couples costume with him and also down for some handies at the very least, girlfriend material! He laughs at his jokes, sometimes, everything Mack ever dreamed of! Whereas Will is like *blank face* oh no I like Mack I like Mack specifically I like him a lot. And like I'm sure Mack could get there eventually, but Will is gonna be having an extended crisis in the meantime.
you get it. YOU GET ITTTTTTTTT
