A Hundred Years - A One-Shot [Aliens AU]
Authorâs Note: So, this one is for my fellow Bishop Girlies! @mandy23bâ - Happy 4th Friend-Versay! (Youâre for sure stuck with me now!)
@suffertheseaâ because 1) Happy (belated) Birthday! and 2) because it was your lyric choice and so I had to make it Bishop, obviously! I thought youâd enjoy đ
Love you both TONS! đ
Amanda, I know OC fic isnât your preference, but, I hope you enjoy it anyway!
Please note there are some weird AF paragraph gaps in this that I just canât get to work nicely... so I apologise in advance đ
Warnings: Some swearing / Depressive spiraling / sex reference and innuendo / He might be *slightly* OOC... please judge this for yourself, I tried my best!
Premise: From this fun little request post. Thereâs engineering work to do, and Rex is spiraling. Despite Bishopâs valiant attempts to stop this from happening, it seems more like a delay. Sure, it started off as a joke - but now sheâs really thinking on the fact that for the next 100 years he can upgrade himself and she... canât. Not without drastic medical advancement. Sometimes itâs not about living for the future, but in the moment...

âA hundred years wouldn't be long enoughâ ~ Mean It This Time, Carly Pearce
---
It started, as it always did, with a game of chess. Although, by this point in their down time, the game had been practically forgotten in favour of general chat and gossip. The pieces used more as something to occupy hands â with the rules of the game being broken left, right and centre, as they were moved across the board with no particular destination. Travelling between planets on shorter journeys meant no need for Cryo, but right now Hicks would be glad of it, because he was bored out of his mind. So bored that really he lacked the concentration for a serious game of chess â and his feigned attempts at trying had quickly made Rex lose interest in playing any better. She had been the one to initially distract him with small talk and now the board was an absolute mess.
Though, being stuck together on a ship â and being close friends â meant really there was little to talk about beyond rumour and speculation. Or whatever bets the other crew members had going on this week. Hicks sank all the way down to the table, head resting on his crossed arms. She raised her eyebrows at him, âYou know at this point you might as well go back to bed, huh?â âAh, would that I could Rex⊠you know the second I do, something will actually happen.â âWell at least it will be worth it for the rest of us!â She tipped the rook she was messing with a little too far and it clattered off the board and rolled across the table, Hicks stretched his palm out to stop it, but even this was half hearted. âThis is the most down down time ever.â âThen go find someone to mess around with.â âYouâre the most fun to mess around with â suggesting chess was a screw up on my part.â Rexanna leant on her knuckles, eyebrow quirked. She tipped her head, and as she did so loose curls of dark hair fell into her face; regretting her change of position, she blew them out of the way. Maybe she should have tied it back today. âI noticed. And to think I could have kept going for an easy victory!â She looked back to the board â no point now with the state it was in. If they wanted to keep playing, theyâd have to reset the whole thing. âBut Iâll take the compliment that I think that was.â Hicks raised his head, but not by much, âItâs official, Iâve never been this bored in my life.â âSorry, I didnât realise you turned into Hudson on this trip-!â Rex folded her arms, looking away from him nonchalantly. That soon got her best friend sitting up. âYou did not.â âDidnât what?â âI KNOW I didnât hear you say that-!â She grinned, âWell, if youâre gonna complain I donât know what you expect me to say!â He leaned across the table, âYou are SO lucky I like you!â âOr what?â Rex couldnât help grin wider, teasing, before he smacked both her shoulders, âOW! Geez, Hicks, youâre a lot bigger than me!â She tried to lunge back across the table, but he had leaned out of reach. Now they were both laughing, and though she was rubbing her right shoulder, Rex wasnât actually hurting. âHey, you could always do work!â She suggested; that was always the easiest way to increase any kind of productivity, and on a ship this big, there was always something to do. âUh, no thank you.â He waved that one away â seeming to suggest that in honesty, the only reason he was sitting across from her now was to avoid working. Fair enough. Hicks swung his right leg up onto the bench beside him, now apparently interested in his combat boots, âNever known you to throw a game of chess.â Her eyes flicked back to the pieces in annoyance, âI didnât, but you werenât really taking it seriously so there was no point. Thereâs nothing in an easy victory.â Hicks was right though; it was her favourite game. From the âCHQ MVIIIâ on her armour, which had now also been transferred to a tattoo just below her right collarbone, always obscured by her blue flight suit. (Which sheâd now become partial to wearing when not in combat, for both comfort and the practicality of ad hoc engineering around the ship. Not to get too âmatchy-matchyâ with her significant other!) To the chess piece around her neck⊠it was pretty much how her whole relationship had started⊠âI dunno, I figure distracting you once or twice has given me easy victories.â Rexâs eyes narrowed, âAnd you think Iâve forgiven you for that!?!â âWell if I can beat you then I figure youâre not really the best on the ship.â This time instead of leaning across to hit him, Rexanna grabbed the piece nearest to her and threw it at him, âShut up!â Hicks merely laughed, âHave any of the newbies beaten you yet?â âNo!â She was clearly falling for his teasing at the way her voice was pitching - damn him! âI better teach âem that all you gotta do is mention-â âAnd how is that gonna work now, jackass!â She picked up another piece, âDonât make me throw another at you!â His laugh turned into a full-blown cackle before he calmed a little â smile still mischievous as he looked to her. âFrost, Spunkmeyer and Wierzbowski still got that stupid bet on how long itâs going to take anyone to figure out your relationship?â âI still think they should have had bets on the newbies thinking itâs us, but thatâs just me.â Rex gave a shrug, âI think so. Itâs not out there⊠itâs not hidden. It just is. Some of them know, Iâm surprised they havenât told the others⊠unless theyâre getting hush money!â Hicks picked up one of his bishops and studied it with interest, âThey do seem to keep thinking weâre a thing.â âYouâre not exactly pointing out that you have a girlfriend, are you.â âWell I think Iâd much rather be out in space with her than you, but thatâs just me.â Rex folded her arms, squinting and mouth open, but didnât even rise to it, âYou wouldnât be out here without me Hicks and you know it.â âUtterly lost!â He grinned and put the piece back down. Before his smile faded a little as he looked curiously behind her, âOoop! Your man is here to pick you up.â
Rex twisted around in her seat, and sure enough now standing in the doorway of the mess hall was Bishop. She tried not to immediately beam about it â but knew this only meant one thing. Mother had picked up a few knocks here and there with some of the shipâs internals and although not serious, they needed fixing. Rex had been putting it off until they had enough down time and no other work to do⊠apparently that time had come. She offered a wave, before indicating that sheâd be two minutes. He nodded politely, before she turned back to Hicks. âYeah, guess I now have work to do!â âAw man, you jinxed it!â Her best friend appeared momentarily sympathetic before his eyes narrowed, âWork? With Bishop? Câmon Rex, where are you really going? I know it ainât work!â âDo you want a functioning ship or not? Weâve been putting this fix off for weeks!â âYeah, uh huh, sure!â Hicks raised his eyebrows at her to indicate he believed otherwise, âHave fun getting your fix.â Rex hated that she could feel her cheeks heating, âScrew you!â âSounds like thatâs whatâs gonna happen to you, honey.â âIf I wasnât so scared for my life of what Ripley would do to me once we got back, Iâd kill you.â Hicks grinned a little wider, âThatâs my girl! Also, if weâre being honest, as you canât survive without me, youâd be throwing yourself out an airlock far before that.â Point noted â but Rexanna wouldnât say it out loud. She pulled her feet out from under the bench and made a motion to stand, but Hicks was intent on keeping her there as long as possible â now studying more chess pieces. âHey, didnât you play against his creator, once?â She was glad for a moment she hadnât mentally checked out of the conversation already, or she might have taken a while to pick up the train of thought going on here. Hicks was referring to Bishopâs designer and the lead engineer on the 341-B project. âMichael? Yeaaah, what about it?â âDidnât you win?â Rex wondered if he was being facetious. âNo.â âNo?!â Hicks genuinely looked surprised when he looked up, âI thought you got what you wanted?â âI did get what I played him forâŠâ   essentially the agreement that once Bishop became an âobsoleteâ model in Wey-Yuâs eyes, and especially in the eyes of their USCM missions, instead of being deactivated he would become completely Rexâs responsibility. She expected Android law to have progressed by then, but, until such a time, if this protected him it was the least she could do. ââŠI didnât win.â âFair enough. I wonât bring up any more of your losses, I was trying to big you up.â Rex scoffed, âAgainst a multiple time world chess champion? Try again â remind me of all the times I beat Hudson,â she leaned in, giving her hands purchase to push herself back and away from the table, âor you!â Hicks laughed again, âNo chance!â Rex stepped back a few paces, grinning at her best friend, âAlright, I gotta go â enjoy your single life on the ship, Hicks!â âYeah well, at least I donât have to hide away any time I want some action and pretend Iâm working-!â This time Rexanna laughed, winking at him before turning, âYouâre just jealous!â She held a hand up in a wave goodbye, âSee ya!â
Bishop was leaning against the wall outside as she rounded the corner; amused by her friends jabs as much as anything else. Sheâd get him back later. âRexannaâŠâ âSorry-! To be honest Iâm not sure if that conversation was worth finishing. But Iâm good now⊠this is about the fix weâve been putting off right?â âYes.â He regarded her steadily, âThis is⊠about work.â Catching on, she flicked her eyes back in the direction sheâd come from, âY- Yes, I know.â âDidnât seem thatâs what you and Hicks were talking about.â She very nearly snorted, âI think he was joking with me, but that isnât what I was expecting anyway. I knew this had to be done⊠down time comes after, thatâs okay with me!â She beamed, walking in step with him, offering a wink that was only met with a look of mild disapproval.
 ***
They were so close as they walked towards the source of the issue that they found hands and arms almost constantly brushing â pretty soon causing their fingers to entwine. They didnât let go at any point after that, including as they had to descend several flights of stairs â instead Bishop would walk first in order to keep her steady. Like a gentleman (as he so often was). Sometimes he made Rex wonder why anyone would rather be with a human male â honestly just one mission with any of the guys sheâd been posted with would likely put you off for life. Except maybe Hicks â but of course sheâd make that exception for her best friend. Even when they came across others in corridors the connection between them was never severed, even if it meant side stepping or doing some more awkward single file walking.
Theyâd been together a while by now, but any situation like this always made something spark within Rexanna â she never knew if it was excitement or dread, but it was definitely anticipation of what would happen. What would their reaction be; what would his reaction be. So often before sheâd unconsciously worried that he would drop her hand at the slightest sign of conflict or disapproval. Which took to Rex holding him just that little bit tighter every time they came to that impasse. Bishop picked this up so quickly that at this point the only way Rex was going to make him let go was if she dropped his hand first. On the ship where most people knew, she was much more relaxed about it; and with any of the first-time fliers, Rex was ranked high enough that staring them down would get them to drop any look of uncertainty.
Eventually she realised they had got this far without much conversation. Normally that would have been fine; they both knew exactly the issue to fix here and silence was always comfortable between them. In all honesty when she had to spend the majority of her day giving orders to the other engineers or fighting her way through marine banter, returning to a comfortable silence with Bishop was heaven. Everything else was simply exhausting. They didnât really need words to know how each other was feeling. He could simply hold his arms out for her and that would be enough.
Yet, Rexanna hadnât seen him all morning â and right now it was like she was neglecting to ask about his day. She turned, âHey, I thought youâd come and collect me earlier. You werenât around when I woke up, but considering I had no other work to do, I thought you might leave me a note or something to meet you down hereâŠ!â âOh.â Bishop smiled, âNo, I had to run some diagnostics. Still got a few to finish later, you can help, if you like?â âOn yourself? Sure⊠You okay?â âIâm fine â itâs just routine.â He gave a shrug, âThen I thought we ought to be getting on with this before it got too late.â Rex could agree with that, âRoutine? You sure?â Ever since sheâd found those weird lines of three-laws-defying code in him that he kept rewriting, she had to admit there was a certain level of paranoia that Wey-Yu would find some way of wiping them out of him. âWellâŠâ She didnât like the pause, this time stopping their walk to actively stare at him. She loosened her fingers from Bishopâs â as if to emphasise the importance of his next answer. ââŠItâs just upgrades, Ree, you donât need to worry. I promise. But there are some data chip changes I need to do.â His voice was so gentle with that particular use of her name that she believed him instantly. But she had other issues, chewing her lip momentarily and looking away from the weight of his own stare. Even now sometimes she couldnât hold those eyes of his. Truth was, she might have got his promise â might even have been given a written contract with a signature⊠but she didnât trust Michael and the company one bit. What annoyed Rex most was she didnât have a choice.
Instead, she made something more like a joke of the situation, continuing their walk. âIn 100 years I'll be nothing but dust, and you'll still be walking around upgrading yourself!â Bishopâs response was to chuckle, and she smiled just to hear him laugh, âYou don't know that! There could be many medical advancements between now and then.â Funnily enough he said it with every ounce of seriousness, so it was Rexannaâs turn to laugh, âWell they better hurry the hell up or I'll be too old! By that point they better put my brain in an android!â She didnât know if she were joking or not, but Bishop looked across to her, then looked away with a little smile. âThat... would be agreeable.â Rex shook her head, before nudging him playfully with her shoulder; âYeah, I bet!â She was smiling, and her joke was meant to be throw away⊠then suddenly she found herself really thinking on it. Her smile faded.
Not due to unhappiness but curiosity â every now and then this was something Rex would think on. There were a lot of things she couldnât give Bishop that an android partner could. They would be able to understand a lot of mechanical grievances; and that never ending fight for better rights. He was an Equal Opportunity Advisor for the USCM after all. Rex could live her life blissfully and never come into contact with any of that. She tried to be an active ally, for obvious reasons â but did she really give him the support he wanted⊠or needed? She couldnât help but voice it: âWould you⊠like that?â âLike what?â She got the feeling Bishop knew, but wanted her to voice the question anyway. âIf I was in an androidsâ body instead of mine?â If it was still her just less flesh and bone and more circuit boards and circulation fluid. âI mean would that even be the same to you?â Bishop suddenly frowned so hard that Rexanna thought he might have malfunctioned â this time she held his stare just because of how disbelieving it was; and she was starting to feel like sheâd asked something wrong. Her lips parted to say something, anything at this point that would get that look off his face. Bishop spoke first. âNo.â There was a hanging silence again, Rex blinked. âS-Sorry, to which part?â âAll of it. Why would I want that?â âWell, like I say⊠my life is so finite. As long as you have a way to keep upgrading⊠Iâll be long gone by the time anything happens to you. If I was an android I could⊠be around for so much longer.â He stepped a little closer to her, âRex.â It was too late; she was spiralling, âI donât know, maybe thatâd be better for you. My life wonât be long enough for either of us â even with the wonders of tech, and youâll outlive me for so long!â Would he be able to go on without her? Did Rex really want the answer to that question? âRexanna. Ree. Donât do that. Stop.â He took her hands back in his, but, as she kept talking Bishop moved his hands to her arms, pulling her closer before placing his forehead gently to hers. âHey.â Silence again, except she could hear the pounding of her heart inside her head. Brown eyes wide as they looked between his. âYou wouldnât be you. I wouldnât trade you for anything.â Snaking his left hand down her right arm he traced Rexâs tattoo â a swirl of stars and nebulae - before interlinking their fingers, âYou donât think the reason you are so complex and so⊠human is part of the reason I fell for you?â She wasnât really one for blushing, but Rex knew she was getting hot â and he was giving her very little room. Even now Bishop still had troubles with personal space. If Rex backed up, she knew she was about to hit the steel wall of the ship. She tried to look anywhere but his eyes, searching for something to say and stammering. What exactly was she supposed to say to that. In reality, Bishop wasnât expecting her to return the favour. And she noticed that his right hand was now clasped around her other wrist, fingers pressing against her pulse point â as if to really hammer what he was saying home. Duly noted.
Though heâd have to remind her, again and again and againâŠÂ
To break what for her was fast becoming too awkward of a pause, Rex deflected with humour, as her group of marines so often did. âAw man, and here I thought it was for my stellar good looks!â She made sure her grin was extra cheesy. Bishopâs laugh was almost painful, but his look softened. âWell⊠perhaps a little of that too.â At least she was giggling and not spiralling; he could cope with that â as apparently this was so funny to her, she ended up collapsing into his shoulder, hiding her face in his flight suit. Or, perhaps Rex was hiding for different reasons⊠He watched her for a moment, shaking his head, before taking a deep â and unnecessary â breath. âOkay, Ms. Mori. We have a computer to fix. Letâs go.â
Ah, her last name? Now she was in trouble⊠***
Rex had fixed plenty of systems like this before - but never in a room that looked quite so compact. Usually equipment like this was afforded areas that were wider, looking a little like rows of servers. For some reason on this ship, they had decided to place it in a cramped space; meaning instead of having rows of modules with gaps in between, they were all stacked on top of each other and screwed into the walls. Not only that, but it must have been stuffed into a tight angled part of the ship - given that the ceiling was an unusual hexagonal shape that seemed to cave in on itself. And there were modules screwed into that too. The saving grace was it was brightly lit. Unsurprisingly, everything they had to fix was up there. Both because a) of course it wasnât on the floor, and b) it was most likely the weird angles that were causing issues. Rex swivelled in place to Bishop, eyebrow raised, pointing a finger to the ceiling; âGuess weâre climbing?â âMhm.â He affirmed, before giving her an equally disbelieving look, âYou think theyâd design this a bit better though.â âHopefully we fix it well enough for this to be the one time it comes up, but I foresee further issues..!â âFixing it once in almost 2 years?â Bishop admired that hope and optimism, âI doubt it.â âYeah,â Rexanna sighed gently, âme too.â
On the far wall, it seemed that the company were quite prepared for engineers to fix any faults in this room; a storage locker conveniently labelled âtoolsâ (as if they wouldnât have bought their own? Well⊠at least Bishop had remembered to!) and several cables and harnesses tied neatly together that ran all the way to sturdy looking hooks in the ceiling. At least theyâd assist in climbing: but what an effort! Rex puffed out her cheeks with an eye roll; this was going to be a long day.
Before she hooked herself up to ascend though⊠Rex patted down the pockets of her flight suit, wait⊠She cursed herself for a moment; surely she didnât forget them!? Usually she had at least one in a pocket somewhere!! Bishop cleared his throat, and as Rex looked to him she realised heâd known exactly what she was looking for - extending his hand out with a hair tie. âAnd thatâs why I love you.â She took it from him gratefully pulling her dark hair up into it, before smiling, with a gentle, âthank you.â That didnât perturb him from his joke, though. âThought itâd be for much more than that.â Bishop bumped his arm against hers as he passed, ready to set himself up for the climb. Rex couldnât help snorting; âYou mean your good looks, right?!â Although he wasnât facing her, she could hear that smile in his voice. âSomething like that.â
It didnât take them long to attach the harnesses and ropes. Luckily they wouldnât need to also pull a tool box up with them, as the harnesses came with handy tool belts; and anything they couldnât fit in there was transferred into flight suit pockets. In reality, it wasnât necessarily so much of a climb, but having to pull yourself up to the level you wanted. Not so bad for him, she supposed, but an arduous task when this whole fix would require you using your arms. There must have been an easier way to do itâŠ?
Rex thought hard, staring at the rope in her hands for a long time. Either sheâd missed something Bishop had said or he was just being extra patient with her, because he hadnât moved to start either. Staring intently in silence and waiting for her to say whatever she was thinking. And then it clicked. âOh my godâŠâ she said softly, before laughing, âof course!â Seemingly Bishop knew she was about to say something typically Rex by the subsequent look on his face. âMother, could you please disengage the artificial gravity in this room?â
There was a beat with no noise. Rex wasnât even sure if she expected Mother to answer them. Sometimes Mother liked to remain silent when working on things and sometimes she could be overly⊠motherly.
Her eyes flicked across to Bishopâs as if to tell him it was at least worth a shot; but as Rexanna did so she noticed her clothes begin to rise, followed by her dog tags; escaping her flight suit and threatening to send the chess piece attached (a Bishop, what else?) sailing to the ceiling if she didnât keep hold of it. Before long, her feet were hovering off the floor as it really kicked in. That unsteady moment when Rex was never sure if sheâd remain floating or suddenly crash back down in a heap. The latter had happened many a time - especially when people werenât expecting it! Luckily the Zero-G held and they found themselves free floating to the top of the room where the work was needed. This time the ropes served as anchors to make sure that they werenât drifting off away from where they were meant to be. Hopefully no one would decide to check on them, or they were in for a nasty shock. Else the gravity would reengage and Rex would find herself with angry red marks where her harness caught her sudden weight in quite a large fall.
It would be no good doing this if you were afraid of heights.
The lack of gravity worked wonders; they could effectively âswimâ to exactly where they were needed. That would save them some energy; or, maybe a couple of percent on having to recharge later. Though Rex couldnât help but look over to Bishop for approval. He could tell, of course, so he made her wait for it. Luckily this time his stare included a blink or two. âWell I wasnât going to say it until it worked - but that is a pretty efficient idea, yes.â Rex couldnât help but give a little wiggle of a happy dance at this - Bishop just shook his head at her. Sometimes she could get so happy at the tiniest of things. She was still a mystery to him by all accounts. But he liked that.
She held her tongue for the first few minutes of work - because she actually thought sheâd miscalculated - if they needed to remove panels and screws, they risked them soaring off out of reach; and if they were very unlucky, either screws lost, or further damage created they didnât need to fix. This fear was soon abated when Rexanna realised that everything stayed firmly locked in even once unscrewed. Even those screws had a limit and didnât come fully out of the plates. The only thing she really need to keep an eye on was her data pad; making sure she was fixing and rewiring all the right parts, before moving onto the next one. They kept a back-and-forth dialogue to ensure everything was covered. And other than that, no small talk passed between them. They stuck to task. Professional. It was probably the main reason they were allowed to go on so many of these colonisation - or ATMOS - missions together. Because work was work; and the relationship came after or between those moments. They knew how to keep things separate. So separate that there were still several newer marines that, even about a year or so into this one, hadnât figured it out yet. They probably worked better together than most science and engineering teams in the entire Wey-Yu USCM roster. And, in this strictly professional way, they scaled themselves across their entire engineering fix.
***
After screwing her last panel into place Rexanna glanced over her shoulder. Bishop was studying the data pad - having long since finished his section (of course, he had precision and efficiency she didnât). This would at least tell him if all systems were back to functioning. She waited⊠and waited⊠He looked up slowly, almost as if he didnât know she was looking for the green light. âWeâll probably have to test it. But I would say everything looks nominal here.â He jabbed the pad with his index finger, âwe at least fixed everything on the list.â
This was good enough for Rex! Who punched the air. Theyâd been up here a few hours at least; it had been more work than she initially expected. And they were working in Zero-G; not as easy as sheâd hoped. Speaking of⊠now she was up here, she had less clue of how exactly to get back to the floor⊠If she asked Mother to reengage the gravity that presented the âall my weight at onceâ problem of before - likely not a slow process⊠Though then they could just abseil down⊠easy!
Bishop watched Rexanna look down to the bottom - the expression of concentration on her face that showed how her thought patterns were figuring their way out of this. âYou know,â he spoke up, âI have a system that can engage artificial gravity. I could just float us down to the ground again.â âWhat?!â Rexâs eyes widened, âYou do! Well that saves me a lot of hard thought!â She grinned. He pressed his lips together, thinking, âI mean you have to get to me, but, Iâm sure you can manage that.â âPretty sure Iâve been through hell and back and almost died that one time to finally get to you, so⊠yeah. A lack of gravity is not going to stop me!â Without warning Rex pushed herself off the wall - it didnât have quite the desired speed; but she let her rope out enough to sail across the expanse to him. Heâd at least pushed himself out to just about the middle of the room by that point anyway.
Realising there was very little to slow herself down now except Bishop, Rexanna latched herself to him; legs tangling with his and clinging to his shoulders. âUhhhh-! Not sure this is quite what I had in mind-!â He was busy trying to balance both to not send them careering into a wall - but he chuckled; voice teasing. âFunny, because I was.â Rexâs eyes narrowed âHuh?â âI got you over here. And that was the plan.â The silence of her disbelief really said everything, â⊠The extent of your plan was⊠Did you just lie to me!?â It took a while for Bishopâs smile to crack, but once it did Rex knew she had absolutely been played. âWellâŠâ One hand fell to her hip; and it brought back memories of the first time heâd teased her, âit wasnât the extent of my plan. No.â âOh? What was then?â Because no matter what; they did have to get down. So, he better have a way!
His smile was gentle, and he pressed his forehead back to hers, as he had in the hallway to calm her. âThisâŠâ His deep voice lowered to something gentle, not quite a whisper. Bishop closed the gap between them, lips to hers. Rexâs eyes closed on contact, hands tangling in his flight suit as she pulled him a little closer, savouring that contact. He kept her steady in their free float â the hand not on her hip supporting her back; running in soothing circles. He pulled away ever so slightly; but that was another tease, because he knew Rexanna wasnât going to let him get away with it, before she pulled him in for a deeper one. Oh yeah, this was way better than getting to the ground. Rex was getting to experience a Zero-G kiss! (And how many people could say that, in honesty!?)
***
The next time they really got a quiet moment together was late into the evening, after having to fend off a million comments when Hicks decided to loudly proclaim that the last thing theyâd been doing for the past three hours was fixing the ships systems, and the entire table decided to join in. If Rex had hoped anything would go that way this evening, by the time sheâd made it back to their room she was exhausted.
They had finally made it down from the precarious situation of turning the gravity back on by Bishop having Rexanna continue to wrap her body around his and taking the full force of gravity and her weight by himself. After she suggested that might hurt, he came back with the cheeky quip of, âIâm used to it.â âŠShe rather thought it might be the other way around, but wouldnât argue.
In fact by the time sheâd had enough of her crew mates and declared she was turning in for the night - which earned numerous pretty crude jeers (and several people swift smacks to the back of the head; not least Hicks for causing all this) - Bishop was already back to the room and settled. On a ship that was somehow even bigger than the Sulaco had been, and on their third such mission, Rexanna and Bishop had been afforded their own room. Small, pretty cramped, and not really enough for two people in one space without some tricky navigation â but still, theirs. Which at this point sure beat bunking with every other marine she knew.
Bishop looked up as the door slid open, she stepped inside with a blown-out breath and a shake of her head. âThat good, huh?â âDinner was dinner â you know what itâs like⊠itâs everyone else.â A small smile, âOh. I can imagine your best friend was at his most helpful.â Rexannaâs laugh was almost pained, âYou got it.â
âAs for dinner, I could have made you some myself, butâŠâ Bishop indicated to the state of himself â ports open and skin pulled back in several places. She was surprised that there was no sign of white circulation fluid everywhere. âOh shit,â she sounded surprised, âwhen you said upgradesâŠâ âOh yes.â He nodded, âThe company sent along some new data chips, as I said, so I thought they were worth installing.â âMhm.â But this many? Wow. Rex wondered momentarily if that shipment had anything to do with her â and then thought she was better off not knowing. She approached the side of the bed, sitting gently so as not to jostle him. Sensing she had no more to say than that, and would be content with watching him, Bishop went back to installing the little chips â clicking them into place. Absentmindedly Rexâs fingers went to her necklace, twisting around the chess piece, and then her dog tags. With both these things was a very old data chip of his from when he had previously been fixed up on a mission. Tech that had become obsolete almost as soon as it was made. It would just have been destroyed otherwise â but there was something about this piece that felt too real to Rex. And too surreal as well; being a previous part of his memory core.
She pushed herself across the bed to him as inconspicuously as possible, folding her legs under herself. Heâd continue on as normal, of course. Bishop didnât have that horrible feeling any human did of being watched â and certainly wasnât one to make any mistakes because of it. Rexanna had a sudden realisation, while watching him. Well â maybe not a realisation, maybe just a resurfacing of something sheâd known for a long time, but had kept pushing down. Something sheâd almost reached with her spiral earlier before heâd stopped her. But it was so out in the open now that it was unavoidable. She placed her hand gently on Bishopâs free arm, sliding it slowly to entwine their fingers. Even now there was something Rex quite liked about the difference in their skin tones; it never failed to surprise her just how pale he was in contrast to the darker tanned complexion she had. Rexanna realised that beneath that fairly superficial surface (literally), she was just contemplating her own mortality. And, in a strange way, his too. Eventually there would be no more upgrades â heâd be an old, obsolete, discontinued model. To her that almost seemed a worse fate than death. Did he care about things like that? Did he even think about them? Even with whatever agreement she had with Michael Bishop now â which would save him from being scrapped completely â at some point technology would advance so much it just wouldnât be compatible. Sheâd would fight long and hard to make sure this wouldnât happen. But what about after her? How would he cope after that? Sheâd age and die but Bishop never would. He was a collection of data chips: metal and plastic... No. That was wrong to say. Even if the truth. He was as human as she was â sheâd spent the better part of their first mission together relaying that information. There was no debate in her mind at all that he was alive. ButâŠ
Bishop paused his working, glancing up to Rex watching him. Although realising that she wasnât really watching him anymore â heâd lost her again, inside the void of thoughts within her head. He wasnât sure why today of all days she was going through it. He knew it happened from time to time, but Rexanna didnât often get this bad. âReeâŠâ He prompted gently, sounding a little more curious to know her wavelength. He wanted to affirm at least where she was heading. Whether he could bring her back or not. Her expression was almost one of puzzlement too, as she traced her eyes along the inner workings that were still visible, and the small pile of chips he still had to install. âThatâs your heart and soul... what makes you, you... without that you-â He cut her off, now very aware that he was correct. All Bishop had managed to do earlier was pause the journey, but it was clear that the ship had left the space station and wouldnât be back until itâs travels were complete. âYes, but, it can all be replaced, I mean youâre wearing one, and Iâm still the same as I was.â As much as he had a point, that didnât feel the same to her. Around her neck was a fix out of necessity â he wouldnât be here without it. This seemed like compliance. For the hell of it. Because technology just would not slow down⊠She almost laughed. Really, Rexanna was wrong â it was just a different kind of necessity. And at the end of it all, something she couldnât do. Sheâd joked about her mind in an android body earlier â but to a point, she was envious that he could just upgrade or fix himself like this. It all seemed too easy. âAnd Iâm just human... I... Iâm not gonna last like...â Rex gasped. Seemingly out of nowhere she pulled back from him, placing a hand over mouth, before tears spiked. Bishop was quick to spring into action; snapping everything closed â this could wait. âHey, hey... No... stop... why are you crying? Donât- donât think like that!â âShit-!â Rex said again from behind her hand, âItâs just so hard!â He pulled her closer, fingertips gently brushing the remnants of the first tears from her cheeks, âThis isnât even something you have to acknowledge for years. Why is it all coming up now?â âBecause I do have to think about itâŠâ Her voice strained as she tried to stop herself from really crying hard. âI canât be in the marines and doing this forever. Iâm limited. And even if I can still work somewhere⊠youâll remain out here. And thatâs just the start of it-!â âYouâre not limited⊠AndâŠâ He took a deep breath, encouraging Rex to imitate it, in an attempt to help calm her. âYouâre nowhere near that. If anything, at least Earth will be safe for you.â His smile was a little crooked, âI know people say you shouldnât live in the past but⊠somehow, Rex, youâve managed to do the complete opposite.â âYeah?â âYeah, youâre living in the far future. And, while I admit itâs always good to look to the future⊠something tells me Iâve been neglecting to tell you to live in the moment.â He made a face for a second as if trying to recall, searching the room as if it had answers, âOr⊠someone has.â Rexanna groaned gently, burying her face in his chest, making Bishop wind his arms around her, rubbing her shoulders soothingly as she sniffed, âIâm an idiot.â âNo, you just let your mind go wandering a little too far sometimesâŠâ He held her closer, pulling the warmth of her body flush to his, âWe can think about our mortality and live like that, sure. But, the truth is, neither of us know how long we have, so we have to make the most of this time. That's what matters!â His head tipped, recalling something else heâd read, âMedical advancements are happening all the time. We probably have at least another 100 years. So, you donât have to worry about anything for minimum the next 99.â She laughed, which is what he wanted, rubbing her eyes â before shaking her head disbelievingly. Bishop didnât really care if Rex believed him or not, he just wanted that smile back on her face. âEven if I had a hundred years to love you it wouldnât be long enough.â
He chuckled, âWell, thatâs something we can both agree on.â

(Just in case anyone wanted to know how much I love Jason as an over thinker who is set off kilter by every little thing Salim does)
no one was wondering that
---
Jason wasnât sure if he even wanted to send these photographs off to Salim. It would have been an unsolicited email. And honestly he still felt terrible. But that wasnât Salimâs fault. That was just Jason being stupid. That was just some stupid pipe dream, that all of Jasonâs fantasies were just going to come true.
That the gorgeous model heâd been so obsessed with would just fall in love with him some how. That Salim being so nice had been for Jason and not that he was just like that with everybody.
Withholding these just because he hadnât been recognised at an event was stupid. It was selfish.
Jason writes a single sentence email. Indicating that he thinks Salim might want to see them and sends it off.
He wants to shut the computer down and run away, but heâs got other work to do.
Jason doesnât even expect Salim to message back â doesnât expect the Iraqi to care enough to acknowledge it.
So when the email pops up in the corner of Jasonâs screen, not even 20 minutes later, itâs surprising. Jason attempts to ignore it, which lasts all of 2 minutes.
He doesnât know what heâs expecting. âThanks.â Probably. Some one word acknowledgement. But no-
Instead he opens the email to:
âJason!
So it was you I saw last night? I thought I did. But you just disappeared on me. Please next time let me come and say hi! I would have loved to see you.
Hope you enjoyed the party, at least.
These are beautiful, I hope you donât mind me forwarding them over to my Agent? Ù Űč ۟ۧÙŰ” ۧÙŰȘŰÙۧŰȘ
Salim xâ
Jason stares at the âxâ for way longer than he should. It could mean nothing. Equally, it could mean everything.
He can feel his face heat up in utter embarrassment. Sinking his head into his folded arms on the desk and groaning. Â
Salim did see him. Jason had worried over nothing.
Fuck! - how was this man able to surprise Jason and catch him off guard at every turn?
âYouâre still living in a fantasyâ he reminds himself. He raises his eyes just to peek at the message again before reburying his head.
It isnât like Jason for men to make him feel shy!
This email could mean nothing.
âŠBut it could mean something.

I Told You So: A Concept
Authorâs Note: <to the tune of 7/22 by Taylor Edwards> Itâs my birthday and Iâll post my Ronnie Peterson concept if I want to!
Hi, ADCU fans! Welcome to the first of a few concepts Iâve written for you! Ronnie is my favourite, so of course, he gets to go first!Â
My concepts are essentially single scenes from a much larger fic in my head, that introduce you to the relationship, and the love interest...Â
I hope you enjoy this one! đđ
Word Count: 3,567
Warning: None
Concept: Lovers to strangers to lovers.Â
Having moved back to the small town where she grew up, Araya does not expect to come face to face with ex Ronnie Peterson, now all grown up himself. Given the circumstances they broke up in, itâs understandable that he doesnât want her around - but thatâs the thing about a small town, itâs damn near unavoidable... In truth he still has feelings for her. But heâll be damned if he walks down that road again, what if it ends worse than the first time?
Takes place pre-film by at least a few years.
Playlist: Available on Spotify!

When I was gonna be your forever You were gonna be my wife But you went off to find better And I was learning all about life But I was what you wanted and you were what I needed And we could meet in between We were gonna be the greatest love story this town had ever seen
---
Suppose I called you up tonight And told you that I loved you And suppose I said I wanna come back home And suppose I cried and said I think I finally learned my lesson And I'm tired of spending all my time alone If I told you that I realize you're all I ever wanted And it's killing me to be so far away Would you tell me that you love me too And would we cry together Or would you simply laugh at me and say...
---
Let me guess, you miss me, you're sorry Too bad it's too little too late Don't make me say, don't make me say... I don't wanna be right this time But you made a fool of me And you're not gonna fool me twice It's almost like I... I told you so, I told you I let you know, if you let go Find someone else to hold you Just walk away, don't make me say The only words I owe you

It had been more than a few months, and he still wasnât used to her being back in town yet. Life had passed fairly aimlessly; everything had been so day to day before then. He hadnât needed to worry about anything â save the occasional bit of really serious police work. But now Ronnie Peterson felt like he had to be on alert everywhere he went, on the very likely chance that heâd have to find a creative way to avoid her.
Seemed he still had a thing or two to learn about breaking up in a small town. Uhâ being broken up with in a small town. He hadnât had to worry about her since she went to college. Was almost definitely over her by now.
Except that wasnât the case, was it?
And now he was just trying to get coffee before work and there she was, once again sitting in the diner. It made him hesitate, made him think twice. Maybe he could just wait and get to work. Maybe he could actually make it through this morning without a caffeine fix.
Except he was already out of his car and half way to the door â standing in the middle of the parking lot with his hands on his hips, staring at her through the window⊠and he could kick himself. Clearing his throat and closing his eyes, Ronnie focused back on the concreate, shaking his head. âOkay. Just⊠get in, order coffee, get out.â Heading for the entrance he reasoned with himself; Where else could she go? The previous owners of the house had left it in need of repair and TLC â and the old flower shop attached, once belonging to her mother, hadnât been open for years. There was a lot of work to do, and that meant a lot of workmen in and out. All the needed planning and preparation on her part had to be done somewhere - and even with the frequency of visitors the diner got, it would still be a damn sight quieter than home would have been for her.
Fern greeted him warmly, as ever. She didnât even need to ask his order â Ronnie never changed it. Sometimes he thought about it, but setting that in motion hadnât quite occurred yet. It certainly wasnât going to be today, given how occupied his mind currently was on⊠other things. It was almost impossible not to glance over to her â pouring over notebooks and documents, head propped up on one hand, pencil absentmindedly tapping the page as she tried to make sense of it all. She hadnât noticed him yet, if she knew he was here Ronnie knew sheâd be doing the same thing he was. Glancing quickly became staring, until Fernâs next question interrupted him. âYou taking some for the station?â âUhâŠâ He had to fight to drag his own eyeline back to Fern as he answered, slower than heâd like to admit. âI mean, I didnât think about it, but I guess I could call themâŠâ âHey, donât worry about it. Itâs pretty early, I mean they might not even be there, right?â âY-Yeah⊠rightâŠâ Fern watched as, sensing he was no longer needed to answer her questions, Ronnieâs gaze wandered back to the woman sitting in the corner. Araya Monaghan had hardly aged a day since the times her and Ronnie had been high-school-smitten with each other â still looking like a sweet small town girl, despite her move to the big city more than just a few years back. She had returned to Centerville now, though. Fern almost rolled her eyes at him. She has observed Ronnie do this more than just once or twice over the past few weeks â how he would always immediately survey the diner to see if she was here, and then stare. Even if he was also fighting with himself; and Fern could tell Ronnie was most definitely fighting himself. It was about time she took things into her own hands.
âDidnât you guys break up?â âHuh?â Concentration once again broken, Ronnie turned back, not entirely sure heâd heard that right. Or, maybe hoping he wouldnât have to go through this yet again with someone in this town. âYou broke up, right?â Oh yeah, heâd heard right. Unfortunately. âOh. Yeah, that wasâŠâ Fern couldnât help but smile knowingly as he went right back to staring at Araya, answer quiet, âa long while ago.â He was silently begging her to drop the conversation, but that wasnât part of her plan, so Fern continued. âBut you still like her.â Ronnie wasnât sure that he liked the tone sounding more statement than question. He pretended to muse hard on it. Part of him still really hurt â part of him still twisted up seeing Araya back here after so long; like just after heâd got it together she had to move back just to wreck everything? She couldnât get away with that. Not after breaking his heart. Not how sheâd done it.
And yet⊠yes, he did look at her now and at least partially long for her back â if he was honest with himself (which, he didnât want to be), Ronnie nearly always had. Therefore, when he responded with âHmmm⊠wellâŠâ despite his trail off, he nodded; but it almost seemed absentminded, like he hadnât quite admitted it yet. As his attention was still on her, this time Fernâs eyes flicked over too, âWell, she clearly still likes you a whole lot too.â They were almost as bad at each other for staring. The only reason it wasnât happening right now was because she hadnât looked up yet.
This, Ronnie knew. Despite Arayaâs initial shock that he was still in town, she now looked at him in the way she used to. Which in all honestly twisted him up even more. He wasnât about to admit this, and scoffed at the idea instead. âWell, she broke up with me.â Fern simply nodded, âUh huh.â and then placed a cup in front of him. Not paper to take away, oh no, a proper cup and saucer. Then tipped her head in the direction theyâd both been looking, âNow go on, stop staring and go talk to her.â Ronnieâs mouth opened, nearly in shock, pushing the cup back to the edge of the counter, âFern, Iâm taking out! Iâm not staying!â She didnât budge, instead lowering her voice to a semi-threatening whisper. âDonât make me walk it over to her table!â She pointed daringly at him and Ronnie realised he wouldnât be getting out of this in a hurry. This was not the morning he had planned. He swallowed hard, nodding in acceptance of his situation, before picking up the cup â shooting Fern a look just so she knew he wasnât best pleased about this â and walked over to the back of the diner slowly.
At the corner table Araya was sitting at, this exchange had gone completely unnoticed. In fact, Ronnie could probably have snuck in and out no problem and been well into his shift, before she even looked up from the papers in front of her. Largely because she had done the same calculation about five times already and the answer was never the same, and never matched the breakdown sheet. She theorised that it would have to eventually -  but now it was a case of when eventually was.  What she didnât fail to notice however, was someone heading cautiously in her direction, and once sheâd caught the movement it caused enough of a distraction to make her look up. Though, his nearly 6â3â frame probably helped. Although, Araya couldnât help but startle â because Ronnie Peterson was not who she would expect to be walking towards her if he was given any sort of choice in the matter. (Well⊠maybe once.) As he was about to confirm.
âOh, hey!â âHey.â It was blunter than she would have liked. He gestured to the cup in his hands, âFern did this and Iâm pretty sure would have refused me a takeout cup otherwise, soâŠâ Araya pressed her lips together, nodding, trying to ignore her own disappointment and indicated to the seat in front of her, hoping it didnât drip into her voice. âCare to join me?â She half expected him to say no, but Ronnie was always polite so she got a âWell, yeahâŠâ As he slid into the booth, the cup chinked gently as he placed it down â finding space amongst the paperwork â and Araya was given a window of opportunity to study his face as he became interested in her notes. Dare she say he was even more handsome now than he was to her back then. âWatcha doing?â
When Ronnie glanced back at her, he equally ignored the way pink dusted her cheeks ever so slightly, the way she took a breath before she answered to steady herself. âOh, uh⊠kinda budgeting⊠expenses⊠figuring it out as I go, but, not going so great.â Then he smiled in remembrance. That made things worse. And he knew it. âMath was never really your strongest suit.â She smiled back, chuckle soft, and nodded along, looking away from his eyes, âYeah, youâre right.â âWant me to help?â Heâd asked before he could stop himself.
Araya looked back at him, eager to accept, ready to beam and push her books and calculator across the table to him and start rattling off issues - exactly as she would have done in high school. But she stopped herself from looking too joyful, and instead cleared her throat before sliding everything to the side. âNo, you know what, I can figure it out later. Youâre sitting in front of me with a coffee, so the least I can do is⊠actually have a conversation with you. Youâll have plenty to do at work, you donât need to also be doing mine.â Ronnieâs eyebrows raised with the shoulders of his shrug, âOh well, if you⊠ever need any help.â âOh, I know where to find you, Ronnie, trust me.â The pink became dark red, âI mean, not like- I- I know where the station is.â Although the smile he flashed was almost a smirk, âIâd hope you wouldnât have forgotten where I live but, the station is a good start, yeah.â Her eyebrows furrowed, not willing to jump to conclusions, ââŠI, uh, know where your parents live.â Lived? Araya wasnât sure if they still lived here, although that wouldnât surprise her even if Ronnieâs presence did. âYeah, Iâm still on that side of town.â And Centerville was small enough for that to roughly mean the same place. Arayaâs head tilted, it wasnât a hard link to pick up, âNot my side of town.â âWell⊠no.â He said matter of fact. âYour parents still here?â Sheâd half expected him to have been long gone. Ronnie had never seemed much like a homebody, even when he hadnât known what he wanted for his future. Sheâd figured heâd want to stay here even less after her. How wrong she could be. âMhm.â âOh.â Her grimace was easy to read â âwhat must they possibly think of meâ â he held his hand up to quickly rectify. âNo, no, donât worry â I never tried to get them to hate you.â This clearly didnât help things, by the fact her face became pained â but it wasnât like she wasnât aware of what she deserved. Ronnie tried again, âOh no, I-â but then he stopped, because, yeah actually he did hate Araya for what she did. At least back then. Maybe even still. And lying wasnât the way to go, so it was probably best to just stop talking. He bit his lips together, âIâm sorry, that⊠was uncalled for.â âNo, No IâŠâ She crossed her arms on the table, rubbing her thumbs over the sleeves of her dress, âprobably deserve that.â He gave another shrug, this one more apathetic, before taking a sip of coffee. Concluding it was cool enough to drink, Ronnie didnât put the cup down. The faster he drank it, the faster he could leave⊠Araya watched him, not because she was waiting for him to say anything else â simply because she liked watching him. She could sit for hours in silence and do that. If he would let her â which, Ronnie certainly wouldnât be doing any time soon. When he placed the cup down, however, it wasnât empty. âYou know, the coffee here really is the best. I donât know how Fern does it. Truly something else.â Araya laughed at his musing, âMust be a secret ingredient.â He laughed too, âMust be something like that, huh?â
And that was the problem. It was so easy to be amicable. It was so easy to talk to her again. Like a needle slipping into a groove. Natural. Something they both wanted back, as if it was never gone. And it was like it was never gone. But it had gone â goodbye had been said more than once, and the last time they had seen each other (before, a few months ago, she turned up walking down the street in the middle of his patrol looking like a deer caught in headlights), they had both screamed things they wanted to take back.
Ronnie didnât know what he wanted anymore. Friends wasnât going to cut it. He couldnât just ignore her, even with his best efforts. But he couldnât let his feelings run away with this. What would happen if they did get back together? What if it all fell apart again? What if it was worse? He couldnât take that. He couldnât even consider the possibility.
That didnât mean she wasnât thinking the exact same thing he was. That didnât mean Araya wasnât brave enough to tentatively ask it. In moments like this when they were actually getting on â where maybe sheâd get the answer she wished for. Nervously tucking her hair behind her left ear before she did, and yet still able to hold the steady gaze of his brown eyes. âDo you ever think about it?â All the time. âAbout what?â He played a convincing perplexed. âDonât you wonder if⊠- What - this could be?â Despite his previous dedication to the truth â Ronnie had no choice but to outright lie, straightening himself. âGod, no⊠I couldnât bring myself to read the plot points for this. I donât think I wanna knowâŠâ Arayaâs eyebrows furrowed again, if any disappointment had even entered her thought stream it had quickly been washed away with confusion. âPlot points?â Ronnie nodded, âYeah⊠for the fic?â Arayaâs look of puzzlement turned to one of surprise, âOh. I didnât know you could just read those and find out what happens.â âYeah. If I wanted further heartbreak I guess I might!â To stop himself from talking too much Ronnie turned back to his coffee, this time making sure to finish it. But at the look still on Arayaâs face, found himself compelled to continue, âI mean there must be some, you wouldnât write a fic without them, right? I mean--â on second thought, knowing this authorâŠ
She sat silent for a moment with her own thoughts, digesting what he was saying. Although, even when she hadnât fully, Araya gained confidence in her understanding enough to be able to look back into his eyes. What she was hearing was â he didnât want to not try. It was what happened after that worrying him. And no wonder. âYou wouldnât want to know how it ends?â What if it was like a fairytale? What if they got a happy ever after? That didnât have to be just fantasy and her wishful thinking. Ronnie blinked, teeth sinking into his bottom lip, before he shrugged again, this time being the one to look away, fingers dancing around the rim of his coffee cup, âWell I didnât exactly like how it ended last time â if I read it and it doesnât end well, why would I even want to start anything?â âWhat if it doesnât end this time?â There was a warmth to her words as she went back to leaning her head on her hand. Araya was teasing him, of course. It wasnât really a serious question â she knew neither of them could handle it being a serious question right now. They needed time, they had had time sure â but they needed more. His head tilted, eyes still not meeting hers â but the look on his face let her know she had a point. Ronnie couldnât argue with that, but STILL! âI donât think I wanna take the chance to find out. Could be worse. Donât want that. No, thank you.â
By the time heâd finished his eyes were focused back on hers, with intensity. As if his would be the final word. Araya would have let him have it too, would have nodded along; âfair enoughâ. She even went back to looking at her work, pencil returning to her hand - but then she realised what heâd said. She paused her writing and looked up at him, curious, a little hopeful⊠but trying not to look too interested â perhaps not wanting Ronnie to realise exact what heâd said just yet. âWait⊠so you⊠are thinking of⊠starting something?â It wasnât a stupid question. Even if it would seem to be â either way he answered would have felt correct to both of them. It wasnât as if there werenât inklings of chemistry, that had somehow never faded, but she knew how hesitant he was considering how much she had hurt him before. Walking away from someone saying you couldnât handle a relationship and then ending up in one again less than two months later would do that to a person. Ronnie had gone from wanting her back; would do everything and anything to have her back to⊠âwell screw it and screw her and I never want to see her again and Iâm actually quite MAD at her truthfully.â, and back again enough times in the years since. His distance when she first arrived didnât surprise her, even when it was so easy to warm up like this after a five minute conversation. Araya was just as surprised at herself⊠she didnât expect to fall back in love with him so easily, and so soon. The wish for her old relationship back had almost been immediate. As much as she understood the situation, at this point it felt so much like dancing around it; they both still had feelings neither would admit for their own personal reasons and the rest of the town was just⊠waiting. Of that they were almost certain.
Despite this, despite thinking he would want the final word back, Ronnie didnât answer her. Instead, he just sat up a little straighter. His eyebrows furrowed together and he frowned a little, breathing out deeply â in a way that said everything, but there was no verbal answer⊠Araya knew better than to push him, and right now he had no coffee and she had no thread of conversation to keep him here either. Ronnie should be getting up and leaving and going to work now, because what else was there to do? He knew this, and so did she and yet he was still just⊠sitting there.
Either way, she had work to do, and dragging her notebook back towards her, Araya knew she had to think of something quickly before Ronnie figured out nothing was keeping him in his seat. She wanted to keep this conversation flowing â while he wasnât scowling at her like heâd wish sheâd leave, or straight up ignoring her presence. It had been so long since sheâd got him like this, and she liked his company â whether Ronnie was talking or not, she always had. âA-ActuallyâŠâ She held on to the only thing she had left, âIf you wouldnât mind just taking me though this one calculation that wonât add up? Itâs different every time, I donât know what Iâm doing wrong.â He studied her face for just a fraction too long, and without the immediate response she feared that she might lose him this time. Ronnie checked his watch - what was five more minutes? - before he shook his head, âSure. Whatâs up? Letâs see what I can do!â Then she smiled, the way she always used to smile at him and a smile he hadnât seen since sheâd left. Ronnie was 90% sure he wouldnât hear a damn word she was about to say, and Araya would have to repeat herself, but itâd be worth it. What would be five more, five more minutes?
Fern watched from the counter as Ronnie leaned over the table to listen to Araya better, taking the pencil gently from her hand to explain exactly where she was going wrong. It didnât seem like two minutes since theyâd been high school age doing thisâŠ
She smiled to herself knowingly, looking at the empty coffee cup and then back at the in-depth discussion â the joy on Arayaâs face when it finally made sense and the way Ronnie laughed to. And this time he didnât check his watch.
It might take a little time, but they would get there. And if that meant she had to keep pouring his coffee into a proper cup instead, sheâd make as many as it took.

Authorâs Note:  Good god. Oh... This SONG has a lot to answer for.Â
So, I was introduced to these âCourtly Loveâ ideas, and I thought they sounded like a lot of fun, so I have a few requests based around these based on conversations. This was the first one I attempted and uh, yeah we ended up with this glorious wordcount.
Also, for my dear requestor and also dear friend @sagitariusrisingâ Happy (Belated) Birthday! đđđ I hope this fic is everything you wanted!

He had to admit Eadu was not his favourite planet in the galaxy. Susceptible to many a storm, Krennic had never known it not to be pouring whenever he arrived. He probably wouldnât even have thought about travelling over at all, were his old friend Galen Erso not stationed there. True, it was an integral facility to the Death Star, but Krennic didnât need to be here to survey operations, just receive the odd mail or two with updates. Krennic would much rather be at the heart of the weapon his was engineering; it was his project and his baby. But, he wouldnât miss the opportunity to see Galen, and this was fairly important. He grimaced as he looked out at the rain again, hopefully this wouldnât take too long either⊠*** You werenât sure if youâd ever get used to the constant rainy patterns of weather here. No-one had ever really given you the uniform for it â having said that, how often did you really spend outside these days? A lot of your time was spent in labs pouring over facts and figures and complicated algorithms. You spent almost as much time in the labs as Galen did, which was certainly personal choice rather than because you were forced into long hours. You had two specialities: lasers and gem stones; youâd heard about the development of synthetic Kyber crystals and Galenâs work before, but youâd never beheld a real one until coming here. With the amount of effort you were putting in, you were starting to become a technical expert. (Also a little disappointed to say the least when you found out that synthetic Kyber hadnât really worked as expected.) Still, when you and Galen werenât working on your pet energy project â allegedly what this had been for in the first place, until the real reason for Kyber research came to the fore â you were working on the Death Star. Which was some glorified super laser, that needed Kyber to work and⊠well, precision focus, as any good laser should have. Kyber wasnât only going to be used as a power source, but also to make sure that this laser had range and trajectory⊠and didnât waver off that. Besides, looking at the design, although it would collectively become one laser, it started at multiple points across the span of the dish. If just one of those was wrong, would the laser even fire at all? So standing outside on the landing platform, having been summoned out here because apparently the Director of the whole project would be arriving, in the cold and wet was not your ideal start to the day. Especially as youâd been standing here for what felt like close to an hour. Where the heck was this guy? Youâd heard a lot about Orson Krennic before now; not all of it was great, some of it was hearsay, but there was a lot of information you found interesting to say the least. Heâd been working on this project (with or without Galen) for most of his adult life, so it didnât surprise you that heâd be coming all the way out here for an update. You had only ever had the pleasure of being copied on emails to Krennic and the way he responded sometimes was downright scary. You were glad youâd never had to give him bad news⊠but with your project being what it was, it wouldnât be long before you did have to face the wrath of his block capitals. Finally the sound of a cruiser cut through the air, by the distinctive sound it was a Delta-class T-3c. Yeah, you had a slight passion for ships too. You all stood to attention on the platform, fighting off the shivers from the wind chill, squinting for visibility through the sheet rain and trying not to get blown over either. When the door to the shuttle opened Galen stepped forward, to welcome your visitor. He was possibly around Galenâs age, and held a confidence and self-importance about him as he strode forward down the ramp. But he had grace, too. You were almost taken aback by the way Krennic smiled as he shook Galenâs hand firmly, conversation fairly urgent. You couldnât even lip read them from here, but body language was easy to interpret and it didnât take long for Krennic to have your boss on the back foot. But it wasnât panic, only surprise. Galen beckoned the Director towards the facility but Krennic shook his head. This visit was clearly only to be brief; you werenât about to have your first interaction with him after all; he wasnât about to view your work, inspect it closely and criticize it. Maybe you were glad of that. The conversation wasnât as fleeting as you thought, a lot of back and forth that had the rest of you shooting each other looks and wondering how much longer you had to stand to attention in the freezing weather. Eventually Galen gestured to all of you â you supposed he was saying âif you canât come in, or stay very long, at least meet my team.â Krennic seemed to consider this for a time, his eyes sweeping the line and freezing on you. Your breath caught for a moment â maybe it was just your imagination, but his gaze was certainly lingering on you, and those bright blue eyes of his were nothing short of captivating. You didnât think youâd seen a blue like it anywhere in the galaxy. It felt like hours but it could only have been seconds before he turned back to Galen, they exchanged a few words briefly once more before Galen nodded and they shook hands again. Oh, he really was just going to leave? The Director walked brisky back towards his shuttle before turning and calling back something else that heâd clearly forgotten. Galen yelled something in response and Krennic half smiled, before his eyes flicked over Galenâs shoulder and returned to you. Yes. You were right, he was certainly focused on you. There was a rumble of thunder overhead and the lightning cracked across the sky. You had never minded the lightning; you found the colours and patterns fascinating. But those blue eyes were immediately illumined by the bright white flashes and you found yourself swallowing hard, you couldnât place the look on his face but you werenât sure it was so appropriate. That image was sure to haunt you. Krennic turned back, slower this time, and you found that youâd been holding your breath for quite some time.
Suddenly you didnât think that you would mind receiving an email in block capitals from him at all. *** Galen was probably the least subtle he could possibly be when he was trying to be subtle. Heâd been tiptoeing around something with you for a couple of days and it really was starting to annoy you. You slammed your stylus down on the table with a frustrated sigh and turned to him. âGalen, please, whatever it is⊠just tell me. Youâre making me nervous!â He blinked a few times, taken aback by your tone â as if he hadnât been making it very obvious. âI- I donât want you to get the wrong idea.â You laughed, âNow I certainly will! Whatâs going on?â ââŠItâs not my idea, but it is my decision.â âWhat is?â You suddenly became scared yourself, âAre you firing me-!?â Galenâs eyes widened and he held his hands up, âWhat? NO, no⊠quite the opposite. I amâŠâ He paused and thought to rephrase his question, âThey need a crystallographer on the Death Star. A good one. Someone who can keep up with the team here. One who knows what sheâs talking about.â You blinked a few times, before you understood, âYouâre⊠sending me to the Death Star?â âYes. B- but only if you want to go!â Wouldnât that place you directly under Krennicâs authority? Why was it suddenly an exciting prospect? âI would be honoured. This is- your decision?â âThey asked me for recommendations and there was only ever one choice.â That had you beaming, âThank you for the opportunity, Galen.â âWell, I know you wonât let the facility down. And youâre always welcome back.â You chewed your lip thoughtfully for a second, and couldnât help but ask: âWhat is he really like?â âWho?â âThe Director.â Galen didnât really answer the question, although a smile twitched on his face, âWe met in the Futures Program. Iâve known him a very long time⊠I canât say heâs ever changed.â âSo heâs an adult teenage boy?â Maybe that was the wrong thing to say, but Galen laughed. âWell, he has qualities that youâd be forgiven for thinking he was one.â âHuh.â You nodded, âIâll keep that in mind.â âBut he is brilliant, of that there is no doubt. The Death Star project may have been going a long time, but I doubt anyone else could have completed it the way he has. Sharp. Intelligent. Youâll like him, I think.â You wondered if you already did. âWell, weâll see if Iâm begging to come back any time soon-!â He chuckled gently, âWell, I certainly hope not.â It didnât take you very long to pack up, you were practically living out of boxes as it was. And you werenât sure if you were nervous about having to move or not. You supposed you were in two minds; youâd actually get to see and be on the Death Star while you worked â sure the plans were one thing but, once you got a feel for the actual structure, maybe you could even be a little more experimental⊠The advantage of being on Eadu was you could hide away in a lab and make the 10,000 mistakes to get to the one (usually accidental) breakthrough. You were the only one judging yourself here, it was quiet; out there, and under Krennic, all eyes would be on what you were doing. Youâd maybe be given the leeway of 2 or 3 mistakes but none more than that. And everything would be urgent. Needed yesterday! It was a good thing that you could work under pressure. Leaving was hard, and as you hugged Galen goodbye you couldnât help but feel a pain in your heart: âI wish it didnât mean leaving.â âYou deserve it.â âMaybe. I hope I get to come back, eventually.â âWeâll certainly welcome you with open arms!â âTake care of yourself, Galen.â âAnd you â if he gives you any trouble, come straight to me.â You nearly grimaced, âNoted, but I really hope it doesnât come to that!â *** The cruiser that picked you up wasnât his, and you were glad the journey wasnât as long as you expected, so you didnât have too much time to overthink what was happening to you. In fact as the Death Star loomed into view your mouth was agape â you werenât sure you expected the sheer size of it: easy to look at some numbers on a datapad but, when it was in front of you, you thought you might have bitten off a little more than you could chew. You were equally pleased and disappointed that Krennic was neither there to pick you up or greet you on the station â mostly because you didnât seem to be able to find any appropriate words to say. The bustle of engineers, technicians and general command staff told you you were a million miles from your lab on Eadu, and you found yourself unable to communicate in anything other than one word awe filled sentences. Thankfully the Officer who greeted you seemed to understand, and as she walked you to your lab (everyone was obviously eager for you to start!) she chuckled warmly, âDonât worry, I was exactly the same when I arrived here. Itâs a lot. Youâll get used to it â and from what I understand youâll be a very welcome addition to our team.â âThanks,â You swallowed hard, âyes, I understand thereâs an expectation on me here.â âWell, the Director only wants the best of the best.â She keyed you into the lab and then handed you your pass, âIf youâre here itâs because you are the best. And he wants you.â You tried hard not to think about that in any way other than for your work, but it was hard. Ever since that look heâd given you as he left, those vivid blue eyes filled your dreams â including those that youâd rather Krennic kept out of. As she continued talking, she snapped you back to reality: âAnyway, I will leave you to get settled in here, all your things will be sent to your quarters. Iâll have someone sent up with all the details and your datapad.â She grinned at the door before she turned to head out, âWelcome to the Death Star!â *** You spent your time unpacking all your laboratory kit - some of this work youâd only trust to go right with your own gear that much was certain - before you started examining the lab closely. Everything was, as expected, state of the art, they had every machine it was possible to get in order to aid you on your quest to get these vectors just right. If the work wasnât quite so serious this was almost a wonderland for you. As you continued to stare around the lab, making mental notes of exactly which you would need and would be the most useful for your work, the lab doors slid open again to another visitor. You turned to explain yourself away as the new girl but immediately froze. Standing opposite you, also seemingly glued to the spot and an unreadable look on his face, was none other than Director Krennic. You werenât sure you expected to see him so soon, and you were still thoroughly unprepared for it. He recovered better than you. âI was told my new hire had arrived. You-â He paused for a minute, head tipped, before a small smile appeared on his face, âYouâre from the Eadu facility!â After all, Krennic hadnât asked only Galen for help in recruiting â you just had the best credentials. But he certainly recognised you from that platform. âYes, Sir, Galen sent me â he said you were looking for a good crystallographer.â âYes. And youâre here, welcome. Itâs good to finally meet you in person.â âThe honour is mine, Director, I look forward to working with you.â You swallowed hard, âBelieve me, it is me that is honoured⊠uhm?â âOh, Y/N, Sir.â Then you blushed forgetting yourself, âAh! Officer L/N!â That smile became a gentle smirk, âWould it be so awful for me to refer to you by your first name?â ââŠIâm sorry, I⊠Itâs how we do things on Eadu, I⊠realise that I am not there anymore Sir, forgive me.â You could feel yourself getting hotter. âYou need not be forgiven, Y/N. Iâm happy to do things your way.â Krennic placed a datapad on the table in front of him, âItâs all set up correctly, I made sure of that myself. I have to make sure my researcher is well equipped on the first day of her job, after all.â On top of it he lay another access card, âYouâll need that for your room, your ID will allow you access to almost as many files as me, I figured youâll need them.â Krennicâs blue eyes fell back on you, âAnything you canât access you come directly to me, and anything else you need, the same. I will make sure it reaches you promptly.â âYes, Sir.â You nodded through his explanation, âThank you.â Krennic nodded back, looking around the room, âTell me, how do you like the lab?â âItâs certainly state of the art. Thereâs probably not another one like it across the galaxy. Thereâs a lot I would like to explore with these devices once Iâm finished with my work for the Battle Station. Time permitting.â Krennic shrugged, âDo what you will with the time that you have free. I expect youâll work hard.â âYes, Sir.â âGood.â He winked stepping back from you, âI will leave you to get settled, and may I welcome you to the Death Star! Iâm very excited to see what you can do for us!â And by that smirk on his face, yes, you could bet⊠Krennic hurried back to his office cursing himself. Yes, he wanted the best â and he had absolutely no doubt that he would get it with you. Heâd read every CV in great detail; obviously heâd paid more attention to those from Galen, considering the weaponry was coming from that lab, but Galen had neglected to mention that you were with him on Eadu in his note for you. You were Galenâs first choice, and Orson Krennic was not about to go against his friendâs advice. It was just your look. Not just physically, but that look on your face â he couldnât shake it.  Now he could bet that your personality would be similar just to curse him⊠He didnât fall in love often, not hard. Orson could fall in and out of âloveâ with people very quickly â always liked to keep a string of bed mates, if he didnât fall in love, and didnât necessarily care, then he wouldnât get hurt. And he hardly needed to put in much effort, a little bit of flirting and an expensive drink was all he usually needed. Besides, now Krennic had this rank bar and a reputation, so he probably needed even less: sometimes people were trying to pick him up â he couldnât say he wasnât flattered. On the occasions he did though â it usually had the proficiency to mess him up. You reminded him very much of a girl heâd known in the Futures Program â back when he was young and reckless. Okay, Krennic could back track on that sentence, young. That, first love, fast heartbeat, canât stop staring, âonly thing in the world that mattersâ kind of feeling. The kind of love that at that age would make him naĂŻvely think itâd be forever â where their ambitions would meld together and everything would just work out. Even if they had no idea how. Krennic would stand by it as a real love, a feeling he had chased since he lost her. Heâd fallen that hard again since â sure â but never in the same way. Orson didnât think you could ever get a âfirst loveâ feeling back. And he certainly didnât want to ever feel like he did when it ended again. But you, and your face, and your body, and that look you gave him â all Krennic could see in you was her. Turning to his datapad for a second he had half a mind to see who your parents were, then stopped short of himself. âDonât be stupid, Orson, sheâs too old for that!â â even if marginally. It made him curious about you though, what if your personality was the same? What if all of these factors culminated in him⊠feeling like that about you. He almost cursed at himself. âDonât be stupid, she works for you, and youâll shake it. Itâs just the shock, itâs two or three glimpses of her face â youâll be able to pick out all the differences in no time. Then you wonât think about what you loved and lost⊠or yearn for it back.â Krennic scoffed at the very idea of him yearning, but brought you up on his datapad anyway. A smirk started to spread its way across his face as he lingered on your photograph. Well, he certainly wasnât averse to one of you getting messed up in the process of this partnershipâŠ
***
Krennic was right, one of you was going to get messed up by this; and it seemed more obvious now that person was going to be him. He wanted your personality to be different to hers, then he could form some distinction - and for the most part you had differences, you were your own woman. The problem was Krennic let himself get obsessed over the similarities, those small details that wouldnât have mattered to anyone else. And if he was honest those parts of you that were nothing like her just messed him up even more, because he liked those too. He liked you for you. It worried him.
You busied yourself with your work and tried to keep out of everyoneâs way. You very much hoped it might be âout of sight out of mindâ; but knew with the importance of the project you wouldnât have that luxury. That had you experimenting until the early hours of the morning sometimes - and you always sent Krennic an update email last thing before you went to bed. Just so he never had to come looking himself: youâd heard all about him, but now you were here youâd witnessed it yourself. And Krennic screaming at people in corridors was not something you were that ready for. You did not want that wrath coming down on you, so you tried to keep one step ahead of the man that knew this station inside and out. What amazed you was, as you placed your datapad down for the evening and settled into your sheets, more often than not youâd receive a âpingâ to let you know of incoming mail. Youâd ignored it for a while but - being too curious - investigated, only to find Krennic had sent you a thank you note. âWhat the heck is he still up working for!?â Well, this became a regular occurrence, and tonight was no different - only now you waited to see if heâd reply and you smiled as it came in. âWhy canât everyone do this? Â Do you know how well this Station would run!? Thank you. As ever. - K.â You hovered over the reply button, as you had nearly all week. Every single time the knot in your stomach made you panic and you bailed out. Not tonight. âYou are welcome, Director. Just doing my job. Itâs getting late, you should probably get some rest.â As he had, you signed off with your initial. It took him all of 5 seconds to reply, âI could say the same. Â Goodnight, Y/N. â K.â âGoodnight, Director. Sleep well.â You grimaced as the message flew off to the other side of the Death Star, was that a step too far? Oh well. Couldnât take it back now!
Eventually your reports got shorter, not for lack of trying, but progress was slow. And you always tried to make ânothing really happened todayâ last for as many pages as possible. But you realised quickly that Director Krennic was smart enough to read between the lines; he never asked for more than you gave him, but as he started asking you for progress updates, rather than waiting until you sent them, you knew he wasnât far off the point where you might start receiving those dreaded block capital emails.
It wasnât like what youâd done up until now wasnât hard; it was. It was just now you were at a snagging point and you really didnât want to have to redo what youâd already done to get past it. It also wasnât something you could easily bypass. And you couldnât ignore it. If you got this wrong that laser didnât work - and itâd all come back on you. This calculation was going to take time you didnât have - NOBODY had - and the pressure was starting to get you frustrated.
You didnât actually receive a block capital email, but an impromptu visit to your lab. And the colour must have immediately drained from your face - to counteract the way your heart decided to beat like a kick drum - because Krennic raised his hands in almost apology. âThought it might be quicker to ask you rather than you to write up a report.â âWell you already know itâs not going well.â âI know woolly language when I see it. You donât need to use filler with me. If youâre stuck just say so.â âForgive me, Sir, but I donât exactly want to get yelled at, and thereâs a lot at stake here.â You cursed yourself internally for being so comfortable with talking to him like this. But decided that it might be best to speak your mind. âWhy would I yell at you?â You gave him a pointed look that Krennic understood, but he didnât think you quite understood the question. Why would he yell at you? Instead he cleared his throat, âI understand⊠Why donât you, walk me through it?â âCan you help?â It wasnât meant to come out so disbelieving, and you thought youâd put your foot in it about 10 times during this conversation already - but Krennic just shrugged. âIâll see if I can assist. Maybe Iâll have a perspective youâre not thinking of.â You took a breath, âOkay...â âOkay.â He gave a firm nod, and sat at one of the lab tables, âWhat exactly are you trying to achieve that you cannot?â You took a deep breath, âThink of holding a laser pointer,â you collected one, and as a demonstration you pointed it at the blank wall and clicked it on; âEven with a steady hand, or two hands, thereâs movement.â The dot wasnât wiggling much but Krennic nodded along, âWell, this station is just a massive destructive laser pointer, with 8 different lasers all coming together⊠so in fact thereâs 9 laser pointers in total. Even a millimetre out can be the difference between this laser working, or catching on something we donât want it to and blowing up Imperial Forces, or - god forbid - the entire stationâŠ!â You walked over to a little holder youâd rigged up, placing the pen upon it and stepping back: âCrudely speaking when focusing a laser through Kyber it should keep the laser's trajectory steady with pinpoint accuracy, whilst also maintaining the power and range of the laser. Itâs a multipoint system, if even one of those points is off, the whole thing fails. And what better to take the power of a laser created by Kyber thanâŠâ âKyber.â You smiled enthusiastically, âExactly!â Krennic looked back at the dot on the wall, âSo whatâs your snag?â You turned the datapad to face him, âThis.â He raised an eyebrow immediately, âThatâs⊠a lot of numbers.â âYes. And every time I calculate it, itâs an error. And it needs to balance because itâs got to work between-â âNine lasers.â You said in unison. âCorrect.â You smiled, liking that he was getting it. âI donât expect Kyber not to be able to take the force, itâs the making sure weâre hitting it all just right. To check how much the crystals might refract the energy. To make sure thereâs not a power surge⊠I just canât get the power balance right to get the trajectory⊠not to do something ridiculously wild.â âOr make the whole station virtually useless.â âYes. And the thing is that the number is nearly always the same. You know, like⊠Iâm point-5 out, and yet I canât figure out where that is coming from. Freakinâ crystals, and Kyber is notoriously the worst!â You placed your hands on your hips, âIâll get it. I just need time.â He nodded, âYou have time believe me.â Krennic stood, âI believe I should leave you to it.â âBut the completion of the-â âLet me worry about that. You worry about getting my vectors right. You have time.â That he could promise you. Krennic didnât want you to panic, he thought that would throw this project into even more disarray. He needed you with a level head and at your best mindset. He thought he knew how to do just that. You flushed, âThank you, Director.â âDonât mention it, Y/N.â He paused as he got to the door, turning back to you those blue eyes caught yours and you nearly jumped at the dark flicker across them. âI look forward to reading your report, tonight.â The way his voice lowered like that, how that smooth tone he usually kept laced with a growl had you struggling to breathe as he left, and you had to undo your uniform and catch your breath. âGeez, what was that!?â Did you have a thing for your senior commander? A real thing!? Sure those damn eyes were always haunting your dreams, and he was nearly always your daily closing thought (but he put himself there, didnât he!) but⊠this was more than that, this was a physical reaction - and you were sure he was eliciting an emotional one from you, too. âGod dammit, Y/N,â you breathed, looking back to the door and wishing heâd come walking back through it, âcould you have a worse idea-!?â *** He had to be honest he wasnât sure why he had no semblance of control around you; it should have been easy to control. Krennic spent his life trying to control his emotions⊠okay, maybe not very well but he did. You had him smiling all over the place. He far outstayed his welcome in the lab whenever he found reason to go down there; and Krennic certainly found plenty of reason. Usually if he visited anyone at their work station he was either none too pleased with them, or he wanted their report - and quickly! - before he swept himself off to another meeting or urgent matter around the station. He liked the sound of your voice explaining things to him; and how every question he asked was met with not just an answer, but a good answer. Instead of a string of âI donât know, sirâs. Nothing Krennic asked of you ever seemed like trouble either; then again he supposed you wouldnât really want to refuse the Director of the Death Star what he wanted. It was obvious you wanted to remain here, and you were trying to do your very best to figure out all these algorithms alone.
Krennic sent you an assistant and even got you on calls with people in similar fields. The assistant stayed with you a little, until it got a little too complicated even for them and you dismissed them with thanks - youâd got a step closer, thatâs all you could ask for. Eventually though, you had to reach out to Galen - and Krennic wanted to sit in on these calls. You wondered if it was because he thought the two of you would spend the majority of it dragging him - you rather thought you might be giving him a string of compliments with half the chance to do so. And the three of you started to break your work down to basics. Krennicâs new perspective aided more than you really wanted to admit to him, but he had this attitude that made you think he wanted to be useful here - and it made you more than a little suspicious. Maybe he really was spying on you bothâŠ
Krennic wasnât sure if he wasnât forcing the relationship to grow beyond appropriate parameters, all discussions did still revolve around work after all, but was happy that you were forthcoming. Spending more time with you meant he could analyse you more - and whilst you still very much reminded him of his ex-lover, you were becoming your own person. The person who filled his thoughts. You were almost his every waking moment. When in your lab together, even when Krennic was listening to every word, he was watching your body - the way you moved was fluid as you eagerly explained something and demonstrated. But meticulous and calculating when you were working on a screen - absolutely none of your energy was wasted that could have been used to think on the problem. And yet even every small movement you made was significant. Usually to cross through or correct a calculation. Change your vector arrows around a little. Krennic liked watching you do this too, because when it was all correct you gave this small satisfied smile, and even though it was to yourself, it was very endearing - it was one thing he always looked forward to seeing.
Tonight, as ever, Krennic was agonising over waiting for your report. No matter how exhausted he might be when he finally retired to his quarters for the evening, he always knew your end of day email would come through and Krennic forced himself to stay awake for it. Mostly so he could read too much into the string of âflirtyâ emails that followed it, but he couldnât have been the only one who read that energy. After all, sometimes he gratuitously flirted back, and you still kept responding. As soon as he heard that ping he rushed across the room to read it. You reporting was always concise even though you managed not to leave a single detail out - and now he knew more about your work, it was easier to understand and for him to scan through. Krennic would be more thorough tomorrow. âThorough as ever, Ms. L/N. â K.â âI like to make sure you donât need to ask questions.â âWhereâs the fun in that? â K.â âIt helps me sleep better.â âMe not ask questions about your reporting? â K.â âGoodnight Director. Please get some sleep!â He remembered the first time that heâd read that goodnight from you, how heâd stared at those words for a long time - heart stilled. It didnât help him sleep at all, far from it. In fact nothing about you seemed to help anything - except Krennic thinking on you.
You were impressive - dare he say that you had more skill in your particular area than maybe even Galen did. That, added to the weight of his constant Futures Program reminder, kept you at the forefront of his mind constantly. Krennic found it very hard to concentrate on his own work; and his thoughts wandered, particularly in meetings he found to be less than stimulating. Heâd poured over your CV and your previous published research time and again. Read all your imperial records and anything Intelligence could get hold of on you. Krennic knew almost everything there was to know, and yet he wanted to hear it all from you. And you seemed less than forthcoming with information that was personal. That almost worried him - maybe you werenât looking for anything other than a professional relationship with him. Krennic wasnât sure how much longer heâd be able to keep it that way; eventually heâd have to make some kind of move - he couldnât let you go without you knowing. He wasnât about to let you be the (other) one that got away. Not both of you. Time ticked on this evening, and he lay in his sheets wide awake. Work was making him drowsy; and heâd been up and down trying to work himself to sleep, but every time he put his datapad down and switched off the lights he was alert again. Krennic glanced at the clock and groaned, watching the minutes race towards his alarm. Unsurprisingly it was thoughts of you that were keeping him awake. Usually you were on his mind at night; you were certainly the last one before he turned the light off, but usually he could drift to sleep perfectly fine. Not tonight. Krennic placed his hands palm down on his stomach, inhaling and exhaling slowly: wasnât that how you did it? Deep, slow, calming breaths. That evidently made things worse, and his breathing patterns this time brought with them fairly vivid images that occasionally heâd seen in dreams. Certainly none of them were very professional - and all of them were about you. âStars-! Orson, stop it!â But he couldnât, and his mind wanted to play tricks on him, trying to make him imagine what it would feel like to touch your bare skin, to hear you moan quietly, the way you might say his name in elation. He growled to himself as heat gathered a little lower than his hands were. He moved them, breaths already short and sharp and not at all where heâd intended to be at⊠âThis is a bad idea.â Orson groaned softly and bit his lip, squeezing his eyes shut bringing all those images back; did he really have any better ones? *** It wasnât a lie to state you were getting closer. At least to the point where Krennic started to make jokes in meetings that were clearly meant for you only. And when you looked up to him unsure if it was appropriate to laugh and heâd almost dare you to, you knew they certainly were. Heâd always ask for a score out of 10 in his emails to you now. And it was refreshing for you to find a similar relationship to the one you had with Galen here⊠well, maybe you shouldnât have been surprised. They were good friends after all, and there had to be a reason for that. Krennic also made a habit of being wherever you were. And you werenât sure that was so endearing. You understood why he would want to be around your lab - maybe not as often as he was, but then⊠perhaps you knew the reason for that too, you just didnât want to hope on it - but not why heâd turn up in corridors he had no business being in. Or would end up in the cafeteria at the exact moment you walked in. He even ended up in staff briefings heâd specifically asked someone else to take either so he could sit or stand near you. You couldnât help but find some of this behaviour odd: was Krennic stalking you? Was he looking out for you? Was he protecting you? You couldnât imagine it was just coincidence - and part of you hoped it wasnât. You just couldnât really tell his intentions. Thatâs what scared you the most.
By now youâd heard the coffee room chat about Krennic - seemed he had a bit of a ladyâs man reputation. Pretty smooth at getting you into bed, but would love you and leave you just as fast, and on-to-the-next-one. Were you simply the next one? Because as much as by now you wanted to be, you certainly didnât want to be one on a list⊠love you was okay⊠but leave you? You werenât the type of woman who would put yourself in that position. For him would you?
It made you a little more cautious around him, and suddenly that made your relationship slip. Because you didnât know if you should be flirting with him or joking with him as much as you were. This pull back from you didnât faze Krennic too much, just made him try a little harder. For you it then became obvious what he wanted. And you had to do your damndest to control yourself. You both did.
You were using every ounce of your Imperial training to try to ignore your feelings, to make sure your face stayed level and revealed nothing. You always tried to keep your eyes on his face; instead of the wandering they wanted to do - even when he wasnât directly talking to you. That didnât mean that when he was walking away from you, or simply keeping busy in your lab, you werenât discreetly checking him out. You had to wonder what he looked like out of that uniform, considering he looked so gorgeous in it. You were inexplicably drawn to him, but you werenât sure if it was his power you were attracted to: the rank bar on that uniform told everyone exactly who was boss and he walked like he owned every corridor in this place. He didnât even need to exert his influence in meetings, everyone knew he was the most important man in the room. When Krennic had something to say everyone listened, even when he said it quietly. Youâd never known someone to command that kind of attention, and considering that reputation you were not the only officer - of any gender - who fawned over him. You were just the best at hiding it. That charisma he exuded really was something to behold; he was just far too confident. Maybe a little conceited in it too, but you were sure youâd be powerless to it. The Director probably had the ability to walk up to you and say âCome to bed with meâ and youâd go on that alone, you knew if he was so inclined, he could just say it like that. It was probably in your favour that Krennic liked to be a little more suave. Krennic seemed like one for class and grace. Or was it that you really were attracted to him, that you had some kind of undeniable chemistry. That you would almost count him a friend. That you just liked being in Krennicâs aura and talking to him about work⊠youâd even started to open up to him about personal stuff, where youâd grown up, your family⊠how exactly youâd ended up a crystallographer who was working here on laser vectors. And most importantly how much you loved storms, planetary or solar - this seemed like something you had to let him know. Just a silly little fact, perhaps, but to you it really meant something. It was little moments like that, when he laughed at your stories, that you thought this really might be mutual attraction, rather than someone Krennic just wanted to get in bed.
Yet, you had an effect on him also and he tried to hide it as well as you did. You caught it, only because you knew the look of someone trying to contain themselves. You saw it in the mirror or polished surfaces of this battle station all the time. Krennic quite often clenched his jaw around you, he had this habit of staring at you like he was staring through you; and sometimes he would just stare forward if you were next to him. That almost annoyed you, because you wanted to be able to look into those crystal blue orbs just once... But if Krennic was watching you, then it was an altogether different story, and if he ever caught you catching him, that look in his eyes didnât disappear; it was hungry, and although it stirred something within you that you had to fight even harder to control, it scared you a little too - and in the back of your mind it lit a spark that became a raging fire. And you had to know, would he act on that look too? You made a vow, before youâd finished your work, before youâd left this battle station - you would find out.
Today hadnât been so bad by all accounts; the test youâd set up you would have to leave overnight, so you got out of the lab on time. Maybe youâd even get an early night tonight. Maybe youâd persuade the Director to one of his own with your report email; you thought he probably needed it. A frown pulled its way across your face as you arrived at your quarters with the door open, and you poked your head around it, gasping to find other officers moving things around, and carrying what appeared to be boxes of your stuff. You hadnât authorised this! âWhatâs going on!?!â You blurted, a little angrier than youâd meant, âWhat are you doing!?â Then you froze for a second; had you read something wrong? You knew something was up with him⊠but maybe you were supposed to have acted on it by now? Maybe your work was taking too long - was he pissed at you? Did Krennic want you off the station!? You looked to the most senior officer, âAm I being thrown off the project?!â âNo.â At least you could breathe then, âWeâre simply moving your quarters.â âMoving my quarters?â You couldnât help but be confused: had you missed that email? It seemed a little too important to just be sprung upon you. âOn whose orders!? I havenât signed off on this!â âDirector Krennicâs.â That shut you up almost immediately. âOh well shit, whatâs he moving me for!?â You swallowed hard, not even caring if it was visible. âWell, in that case you better show me where Iâm moving toâŠâ
Once you got there - and they assured you that your key card would still work - you realised that you hadnât just moved to any old room. Krennic had moved you to a commander's quarters, and it was plush to say the least. You had so much more room in here. The bay window stretched at least half the room and you couldnât help your small smile; âhe rememberedâ. Your little stories of staying up huddled in a window frame to watch storms in nearby, or passing, solar systems and planets. You shook your head slowly to yourself and picked up your datapad again, figuring out where exactly you were on the ship - further from the labs, which was a minor inconvenience. It seemed that at least there was an elevator close by that you could use to get to the right floor and then itâd be a straight walk. What interested you though was, looking at the schematic, you appeared to be just two corridors away from Krennicâs own room. That was not coincidence. âSon of a-â suddenly you found yourself laughing. Why? So he could walk past your room every day? So he had you closer? And looking at the rooms around, probably as close as he could get: you were surrounded by his senior command team.
You moved through the room, and started to notice little details that heâd had placed here; books by your favourite authors, or researchers⊠your favourite music. Maybe youâd told him far too much about yourself. But it was the fact he retained the information that had you impressed. Heâd even left you a box, tied with ribbon in your bathroom, and when you pulled at it you found it was filled with very expensive toiletries, that you knew he wouldnât have been able to come by easily, in all your favourite scents. Nothing is coincidence at all⊠is it Krennic? Was he trying to woo you - was this all part of a game plan; you could only conclude yes. And by the way your heart was currently beating in your chest, you had to say it was working.
Moving back into the main room and sitting back on the bed with your datapad, ready to send your report for the evening, youâd failed to notice the letter lying on top of your sheets. You pulled your finger across the top of the envelope and unfolded the card carefully: âDear Y/N, Welcome to your new quarters. I believe someone of your talent is worthy of somewhere a little nicer. You will find me just down the hall if you need anything, and please do not hesitate. I hope you enjoy your stay here. And, should there be a storm, that you enjoy the view. Director Orson C. Krennic Head - Imperial Weapons Divisionâ The card also seemed to be scented, which you had to raise an eyebrow at; âwho uses scented note cards?! Whatâs that all about!?â You put it down to having more money than sense and placed the card on your bedside table, before getting back to what was really important.
As expected, even when it was a little earlier in the evening, Orson Krennic responded to your email almost immediately. âEarlier than usual? You really are efficient, Y/N. â K.â âThought I would get an early night in Director⊠in my new quarters. You should to.â - You werenât meant to imply together, but you also didnât care if thatâs how he read it. âAny thoughts? â K.â âThey are very nice, thank you. Although in future a little more notification would help!â âNoted. And as you are closer, you can deliver your reports in person now â K.â You raised an eyebrow, why would that make any sense? âWhen I can send it over email?â Why... would you? Even when closer the time itâd take you to walk to his quarters, give him the document and walk back, would still be far longer than an email. âConsider it. â K.â âI will!â You werenât sure you would, but that was what he wanted to hear. And of course youâd play to that whim. âGood. Goodnight, Y/N â K.â âGoodnight Orson.â You stared at the email after youâd sent it and almost screamed. What were you doing-!?! Why were you addressing a senior officer by his first name!? What was he bringing you to? You placed your head in your hands and took a deep breath. âOkay, itâs one slip and you can say you were tired and apologise profusely laterâŠâ
You threw your tablet on your table too and snuggled back under your new plush sheets. The bed was cozy and soft and suddenly you couldnât be happier that Krennic had arranged for this. You closed your eyes; it was this time of the evening you liked to try and ground yourself. It was clear that both of you wanted each other to some degree, but you were the one that had to be sure about this and the most careful. You had more to lose here; Krennic had the ability to kick you off the project, not just out of his bed⊠if you ever got in it. But by now you were pretty sure you would end up in it. It was more a matter of when. He was powerful, youâd covered that. But Krennic was also dangerous, that much was also obvious⊠dangerous in terrible and delicious ways. So perhaps, as well as everything else, you were drawn to that danger. You wondered suddenly which side of him would show up more when it was just the two of you alone⊠in conditions more intimate. Would that power completely consume you; did you have any chance at all? You werenât sure you wanted any at just the opportunity to be pinned under his body. To run your hands over his skin. To answer all the questions you had, and see if all those water cooler rumours were true⊠(You hoped to God some of them were.)
You were close to drifting off when your eyes suddenly snapped open. Krennic was your favourite pre-sleep thought, and your subconscious tonight brought you a revelation. That note card was not scented. You scrambled around for it and held it close to your face, inhaling. That was what Krennic smelled like - you should know because youâd always thought he smelt pretty good, it was a fairly subtle scent when on his skin - here it was a little stronger, which is why it had taken you so long to pick up on it.
That damn man had sprayed his note to you with his cologne. *** You decided that Krennic knew far too much about you. On the morning after your move you opened your door to head back to the labs, so you could check on the results of your testing, and Krennic was two steps from your door. You were startled by his sudden presence but he offered nothing but a small smile and a casual, âRight on time, Ms. L/N.â âUh- I- Director.â You wouldnât exactly say you greeted him as he felt in step with your walk towards the elevator. âHow do you think your testing went?â âWellâŠâ You took a deep breath, instantly regretting it as that cologne seemed to surround you completely. Now your senses were looking for it. Your stomach knotted and you felt the immediate urge to press your thighs together and groan. Dammit. âWell?â Krennic pressed, eying you when you didnât answer. You hoped your face wasnât flushing even though you felt hot. âItâs a make or break test. I certainly hope itâs worked.â You could hear that strained edge to your voice, you knew for certain Krennic would have picked up on it. As you turned into the elevator you immediately reached for your button, the Director was two steps ahead of you and your hands brushed. You withdrew yours immediately, and knew you must have been red by now. âS-Sorry.â âNo, my apologies, I just wanted to help.â You stared at the floor of the elevator for a good few minutes, holding your fingertips in your other hand. Why did it tingle like that? You didnât actually ever think youâd physically touched him before, had you? Even when youâd been so close previously in the lab. But itâs not even like it was his skin. In fact, for someone with such a reputation, Krennic had very little skin on display at all. Did he ever not wear gloves? Not that you could recall. âStop-! Y/N! You sound so repressed! Youâve seen naked men before.â Your eyes flicked back to Krennic, staring at the ceiling, and you swallowed hard. Sure, but you hadnât seen him naked. The rest of the ride was conducted in silence, because you didnât trust yourself not to blurt out anything you shouldnât, but as you left Krennic took a step to stop the doors from closing. âWhat, not even a goodbye?â You paused in the corridor and turned back to him, unable to stop yourself from smiling that he actually wanted that from you. âGoodbye Director, have a good day.â âNot likely, but work permitting. Good day, Y/N.â and as the doors slid closed on him you caught his wink, and could swear he was smirking.
You stood outside your little lab for a long time before you entered. You admitted to yourself you were delaying the inevitable but you needed to. After all, if this was a complete failure then you might as well throw out almost a yearsâ worth of work. Well, maybe that was a bit dramatic, but at least all the months youâd been up here on the battle station. Youâd need a good stiff drink and to cry in bed for a couple of days at the very least. Oh, and youâd probably be fired, reputation in ruins⊠You keyed yourself in and flicked on the lights. What you had done was rigged up a few small versions of the Death Star and set each of them to different vectors. The pieces of Kyber you were using were tiny, but they would still work in principle with your laser pens.
You stared at the points on the wall in turn. One had disappeared completely, which was all but useless to you. It didnât mean that the calculation wasnât steady: it could have just meant that the trajectory was way off. Either way, you could discount that as a failure. And the next one; giving a similar waver to when youâd shown Krennic what âsteady handsâ really meant. Although minimal, youâd already explained why you couldnât stand for it. That left the last two. And the results looked fairly similar even though your vectors were different for both. You had to call the result unexpected: perhaps there were two ways to do this. You looked back to your little models and then to the points, waving your hand in front of the lasers. And then you smiled, and that small smile became a grin, became a laugh of triumph. Although both were near perfect, the third one had a far stronger beam of light. There was your power. The second most important part of the project. The station had to do what it was built for when the laser reached its target, after all. âWe have a winner.â You whispered to yourself walking back to your table. Now you had to report these findings and scale them up to full size. Working in other contingency factors - after all that laser would not be travelling through clean air in a lab and hitting a solid smooth wall. That would be fun. Â Still, you couldnât wait on his report to tell him the good news. âReport spoilers: It works!â There was a long pause between emails, and you could picture Krennic sitting at his desk, relief flooding him, smug little smirk on his face that this was finally going to get done - the finish line seemed in sight now. You hoped youâd made his day. When the email came back you couldnât help but read into it a little more than you probably should have, and yet you also thought he wanted you to: âThis sounds like a cause for celebration... â K.â
You did not in fact bring the report to him by hand, and neither did he ask it of you, but from that day forward you were called into his office daily briefings. And suddenly you got to realise just what your research meant to the people working on this station, because the first day you walked in, expecting to see just him, the room was full of his top engineers and each and every single one of them was applauding you. âNow the real work begins.â Krennic was leaning against his desk, arms folded, with eyes only for you. âWelcome, Y/N, to the team that will build your concept. From physical engineering to coding. I will assist in overseeing you, but the team are now at your disposal. From now, until test day.â Your eyes couldnât help but light up, even though you knew you should have probably been professional about this. âThank you, Director.â You beamed, âI look forward to working with all of you. Let's make this vision a reality, for the Empire!â
Suddenly this was better than anything youâd had with Krennic before - you almost had non-stop contact with him, from walking out of your door in the morning, to retiring for the evening. And you were happy to find that he provided both the perfect intellectual and humorous stimulant. You also noted how many crew members now looked at you with nothing but jealousy. Despite the fact nothing had happened between you yet. The way he regarded you was now even more open. Every look that followed every little flirtatious comment or innuendo was extremely pointed. Sometimes his eyes would even darken. It scared you enough to have you shy away from him; but also had you scared at how much you desired him. You just wanted him to touch you, just the smallest taste. To be honest you didnât care what he did, as long as he did something. Krennic could bend you over his desk in front of your entire engineering team for all you cared anymore.
Speaking of your engineering team, youâd never seen a group of people work harder or more efficiently, and seeing them turn all your data and tiny models into tangible pieces for the Death Star was wonderful. You gasped to see the sheer size of the Kyber they had harvested to give your vectors pinpoint accuracy. âI have never⊠seen Kyber like that!â And the way Krennic got all smug again, âOnly the best for you. Of course.â âYou flatter me, Sir.â And that little knowing nod he gave you back. Once everything started to go into place, and you got word that Galen was almost finished with the laser itself (you received many an email from him about how proud he was and so many others from your friends back on Eadu that you almost cried, thanking them again and again for their participation in even the smallest part of your research), that the dish was currently in the process of being assembled outside and you couldnât believe you were doing this. You couldnât believe you were about to be a part of history. Your name was going to be right up there. Never even in your wildest dreams... As you could take a little more time over your reports these days, and there was far less for you to really comment on, you did start to present Krennic with physical copies. Usually just before you headed off for the evening you would drop them off on his desk with a small smile, and he would drag them towards him. âGlad to see you are taking my advice.â âWell, as you seemed fairly adamant I did it, I thought I had better start, Director.â âThey do make for good bedtime reading.â âIâll betâŠâ Only for the last week youâd started spraying them with your perfume, very subtly at first, but steadily the scent became stronger, and oh, he had noticed. When the doors closed behind you this evening he held the report to his nose and inhaled, groaning as heat coursed through his body. Krennic couldnât take it any longer, he knew exactly what you were doing. Both of you were dancing around it, and now neither of you were being very subtle, either. But this was the final straw - because he wanted this scent all over him. What it would feel like to pin you beneath him, have your body against his as you whined and called his name, what it would feel like to finally be inside you⊠Heâd certainly thought on it in quieter moments of the evening enough⊠*** Tonight your report was late. Not for no good reason; you had a lot of data to review. Galen kept sending you updated laser figures to get you as close as possible with your final vectors. Oh, you had no doubt that the Kyber could take it. Youâd given a wide berth for the perimeters; but still, you wanted to check and triple check. On your head be it if you didnât and everything went wrong. Still you wanted to stop by Krennicâs office to let him know why it would be late, as you always seemed to bring it to him around this time these days.
Krennic looked up as you walked in, without even knocking, but he hardly cared about that. His eyes narrowed at the lack of papers in your arms. âWhere is my report?â Your face scrunched a little, âIf youâd let me get a word out Director, I would tell you. I have a lot of data back from Galen that I want to check and double check before I send it over to you. I want to give you as accurate data and results as possible. So itâll probably be late, or later than it has been these past few weeks.â Krennic tilted his head, eyebrow raised âLate?â He didnât sound very appreciative. âOnly about as âlateâ as used to be normal.â He rose from his chair, and those blue eyes locked on yours, âLate-late bedtime reading? This from a woman who says I should be going to bed earlier.â âThis once!â You protested as he rounded his desk. âYou think thatâs good enough?â You didnât understand why heâd be mad at you, and Krennic didnât sound mad⊠but the words he was using⊠âWell I didnât think youâd mind.â âOh, believe me, I mind.â âI-â You were about to tell him you were sorry - although really you had nothing to be sorry for - but he didnât stop beside you. Instead Krennic stood behind you, a little too close for your liking.
You froze immediately as his voice lowered to a whisper, reaching out to brush a lock of hair behind your ear. The scrape of leather against your skin made you shiver, and you only wished it was his fingertips. You bit back your moan. âI am alone in my quarters after 2200 hours, it sounds like Iâll have data to review with you: thatâs an order.â You swallowed unsure of the kind of response he wanted, âYes, Sir.â slipped out of your mouth and he seemed satisfied. âGood girl. I want it on paper, as youâve been doing recently.â âYes, Sir.â âWell thenâŠâ He stepped away from you and you realised that youâd barely breathed for the past few minutes, âYou best get to it, hadnât you?â âYes, Sir.â What was wrong with you!? Was that all you could say!? When you turned around heâd already moved away, crossing the room. âGood. Now go. And donât make me wait, Y/N.â Krennic glanced over his shoulder at you, blue eyes burning, âAs Iâm sure you know by now, I am not a patient man.â *** You had to admit the pressure was on now. Because you did really want to present him with a decent report. (Just in case he wasnât messing with you and he would be pissed if you didnât turn up at 2200 with the correct figures.) And you sat back in the lab speed typing your way to the end whilst also trying to be as careful about Galenâs calculations as possible. You were right of course, his new figures still worked perfectly within your own. You looked at the clock, 2130. And the Director had told you not to be late. You printed the report and rushed back to your quarters; your heart was beating on overdrive. Was this about to be the encounter youâd always imagined? The throbbing ache between your thighs youâd also been trying (and failing) to ignore since heâd brushed his fingers to your skin earlier certainly hoped so. You barely had time for a quick shower to freshen up, but you took it anyway before changing and spraying yourself with that same perfume youâd been dousing your reports in, and hoping you wouldnât run into anyone in the two corridors that you would have to traverse.
You checked yourself in the mirror as you gathered the hard copy of the report and your datapad for back up. You looked flushed, but still pretty at least. Taking a deep breath to calm yourself for your walk - you had a feeling you were about to end up being even more so⊠You paused suddenly and turned to the window; the colour of space had suddenly caught your eye. Purples and blues fogged in front of you, instead of the usual endless rolling black flecked with stars. It shimmered every so often and you recognised it instantly. âAn Ion storm is comingâŠâ you breathed. You hadnât noticed because your lab had no windows, but you were overjoyed that you hadnât missed it. You allowed yourself to marvel it for a few seconds more before you realised you were about to make yourself late. Padding down the corridors you were pleased to see that there was no-one on route and you reached his room at exactly 2159. You waited for that minute to tick over, and at 2200, you knocked.
âEnter.â Krennicâs voice called you, with a sultry edge to it. And you bit your lip gently. At the sound of his voice his door slid open, and beckoned you inside. *** If you thought your room was spacious and had a generous window, this one was something else. Krennicâs quarters had a window that swept almost the entire far end of the room, and your eyes couldnât help but be drawn to those vibrant purples and blues again. The lighting was fairly dimmed but you recognised it as ambiance; Krennic was setting a mood here. That feeling stirred once more in the pit of your stomach and you swallowed hard, the room had all the amenities, and you wondered why the hell he even wanted an office as well as this. Probably because he didnât want everyone in his room, you guessed, but he had a desk and everything here. You scanned across the room to the bed; at least king sized, the sheets looked comfortable and luxurious. Why didnât that surprise you either.
Footsteps approached from your left and Krennic swept around the corner from whatever had been keeping him occupied. He halted, immediately tipping his head to survey your body - instinctively you pulled the papers up to your chest and hugged them close. âI-I believe you asked me here to take you through a data review, Sir. And I made sure to print them all.â He hadnât even traced his way up to your face yet and that smile became a grin, became a smirk. Krennic stepped forward - bless you for actually printing the damn report. He held his hand out, âIndeed I did.â You offered up the paperwork and he walked back to his desk, beckoning you to follow him. He could already smell the perfume on the documents, biting back a low moan. He had no intention of reading them tonight. In fact you hadnât even sprayed the documents with your perfume, but there was so much of it on you that when youâd held them close it couldnât help but transfer across. Krennic set them, and your datapad, down on his desk and turned back to you, now a little further into the room. Your hair was down to natural length and framed your face delicately. There were no shoes on your feet either. But your dress⊠oh⊠Ending just appropriately long enough to cover everything, the silk slip dress - in your favourite colour, Krennic remembered - plunged pretty low, thin straps looped over your shoulders and, he couldnât see yet, but it had a low back too. At least you were dressed appropriately for where your evening was going to go. Krennic swallowed, aware of his own arousal as he made his way slowly back over to you, again, instead of stopping in front of you he rounded your body. Where he was close the cape brushed against your bare skin and you had to bite your lip hard not to whimper. Why was just the feel of it so sexy? Was it really the thought of being covered in it and nothing else? Would he wear it if you asked him toâŠ? No, maybe not for your first time together⊠you didnât think heâd want you making too many demands of him.
âI checked the weather for today and it looks like there will be a good ion lightning storm in the area. We canât exactly move out of its way so⊠I thought you might like to observeâŠâ âYou remember a lot of things about me, Director⊠this one I might just have to thank you for.â Even as he disappeared behind you again you kept your eyes front on space, although you couldnât help but be curious if he was going to touch your hair again. It hadnât escaped your notice that he was finally gloveless. I really AM like a repressed maiden! He halted, and somehow it felt like he was even closer than before; was Krennicâs breath on the back of your neck just your imagination? You shivered involuntarily and even if you couldnât see him, you could picture that smirk. His voice was at a husky whisper, already threatening to drive you wild. You didnât dare press your thighs together, despite your desperation. âThis dress is certainly not regulation uniform, and as per the rules, that would mean it needs to be removed.â You didnât even get the chance to wonder if Krennic was going to do it himself as his large hands rested on your shoulders for a moment. You couldnât help but tense; it seemed like such a foreign concept, his bare skin touching yours. You wondered if his hands would be calloused with all the work he did. He certainly didnât mind getting dirty. But he was an architect at heart, and his hands seemed pretty smooth, assured, and warm⊠he was so warm⊠Krennic caressed his fingertips over you and you really couldnât have helped that small whine even if youâd have tried. You were still picturing that delicious little smirk in your head, and you wanted to kiss it off. Patience⊠At this rate youâll be getting to do more than that... His fingers slid under the straps, pulling them off your shoulders agonisingly slow, but Krennic didnât attempt to help the fabric down your body, instead he just let it fall. It pooled around your feet and you swallowed hard again, hearing the slight chuckle in his voice before he tsked you. âYou didnât think to wear anything underneath?â âWell I thought about it, but-â You gasped as his hand grasped your waist, sliding down to your hip, his other brushing your hair back to expose your neck. Krennicâs first kiss wasnât even tentative; but it was teasing and you shook under his touch. He smirked into your neck as he continued to kiss a trail. You bit back a groan, closing your eyes to the sensation of his lips on your skin, sighing for certain as his tongue ran over you. Had you told him this too? Or did he really know far too much⊠Finally having him kiss you after all this time was something that you almost found indescribable, and the heat between your thighs made you press them together as discreetly as possible - heâd get there you were sure of it, but that ache demanded attention. Krennic inhaled - and somehow that perfume smelled even better on your skin. He growled, grazing his teeth over your jugular, pulling your body back into his. âOh⊠Y/N⊠you smell so good.â You gasped again as this time his arms locked around your waist to hold you in place; so close that his cape once again brushed your skin, you simply lay your hands over his. His still clothed body pressed up against yours felt simply divine and you knew Krennic was about to drive you insane, on purpose. As those kisses to your neck became a little hotter - and you started to imagine all the marks about to be left on your body - you couldnât resist tipping your head back to sigh his name. You couldnât be sure which he wanted to hear, but surely he would tell you if it was his first name. Maybe he didnât want his lovers to call him that⊠you remembered your promise not to become just one on a list, but you didnât want to think too hard on that right now. Much more enjoy the moment. You leant your body weight back against him, suddenly feeling tiny in his large hands. He smirked into your skin again, pulling back, one hand coming back up to turn your face to his.
âMy, my⊠Youâre already so flushed and⊠responsive.â That little smirk was so gorgeous you had second thoughts about kissing it off. You were already aware of how heavy you were breathing. Krennic bit his lip and somehow that made him sexier, âHave you thought about this?â You nodded, hardly seeing the point of lying. âA lot?â You knew the blush on your cheeks was only getting deeper as you nodded again. Krennic chuckled, âAt least Iâm not the only oneâŠâ He held you in place by your chin, âWhatever your fantasies are, you can tell me. But I can promise Iâll be better.â He studied your face intently, âWould you like me to kiss you, Y/N?â You wondered if that was a stupid question, eyes flicking to his lips and back to that intense stare he was giving you, âY-Yes.â Surprisingly his kiss wasnât as rough as they had been to your neck, but he showed no mercy when deepening it, and his tongue wasnât about to let yours assert any dominance. You could taste hints of alcohol and caffeine, and something sweet - although you could hardly remember what they were serving in the canteen now. When Krennic finally released your lips to let you breathe, you were panting even harder - how was it possible to feel that power even in his kisses; you were going to be completely at his mercy all night and right now it was a delightful prospect. The wealth of experience he had meant he could surely show you a thing or two. The next graze of his lips to yours was fleeting, and he drew from you a whine. By his smile exactly what Krennic wanted. His hands wandered as he pressed a kiss into your shoulder, down the run of the pulse in your neck and over your clavicles to your breasts. Keeping those steely blue eyes on yours you were hardly able to look away as his fingertips brushed over your sensitive nipples. Even your attempts to stifle your groans didnât work and you closed your eyes to his touch as he circled his fingertips around one. âYou are so fucking beautifulâŠâ He nudged your head gently with his own to expose your neck to him once more, âAnd you sound fucking beautiful tooâŠâ âK-KrennicâŠâ You mumbled his name again, once again fixating on his fingertips as he moved them across to your other breast, repeating the same teasing circular motion before he kneaded you. You thought youâd read somewhere that you could orgasm just from this - and right now youâd believe it; feeling that sticky sweetness on your inner thighs. At this rate you werenât going to last until Krennic touched you there. âMaybe weâll have to make this your regulation uniform.â His voice was husky, âIâm sure I could have that rule changed just for you.â You shuddered again as he pinched your nipple between his fingers playfully, âWould you like that?â âO-Only f-or you.â You might as well go for it; he might as well know exactly how you felt. âAhhhh!â Krennic vocalised like heâd just figured it all out, âShould I just keep you here? Or in my office? I hold a great many meetings there, though⊠Iâm not sure I would like them all staring at you in your uniform.â He growled into the next kiss he placed to your skin, âI get jealous too, you know?â Well you did now.
Krennic straightened himself to full height, still supporting your weight his hands travelled down your body agonizingly slow; almost as if he was committing every inch of you to his memory. You already knew he liked details - and he was an architect; so it was Krennicâs business to know detail. Just how much could he remember about a lover? How much of you were you prepared for him to discover about you. His fingertips traces over your ribs, down and across your bellybutton and just below your stomach when he paused and his eyes left you. For a moment youâd quite forgotten that you were in the middle of an ion storm, and you wondered what exactly had dragged his attention away from you. The illumination of his face in the first strike of lightning made you gasp. And all you could think of was those eyes in the rainstorm on Eadu. The first time youâd ever seen him, an image that still haunted you. That was no doubt responsible for you now being naked in his arms like this. You turned to the window to watch the lightning for a moment too, flashing across the purples, blues and pinks of the cloud. âIsnât it beautiful.â You breathed gently, and you heard him chuckle, âI donât think youâve looked in a mirror.â This time he pressed his kiss to your temple, and it was almost sweet. But now Krennic had you distracted by the storm - so his fingers traced lower and before you knew it he was pressing down gently on your clit. Your body gave a lurch into his and he growled again. Moving his fingers into your folds, you moaned head tipped back onto his shoulder, âKrennicâŠâ âI knew you wanted me, Y/N, but like this?â His fingers moved through your wetness, teasing your entrance for a moment, and making you shudder, moaning his name again. âI can see that desire in your eyes wasnât lyingâŠâ Krennic was smirking again as he watched you react to his fingertips, dragging them back towards your clit, âHow many times have you been this wet around me, hmm? How many times have you thought of me doing this? Do you touch yourself and think about me? Is that what you do?â âY-Yes-â Your thoughts were hardly coherent at this point, and as soon as his fingers touched your clit again, in teasing circles, you cried out; âOh, Krennic, please!â âWhat else do you do to yourself when you think about me, hm?â He put a little more pressure on your clit as he rubbed it, âWhat do you think about? Me touching you like this? Or me fucking you? What set you off, hmmm? All that water-cooler chat? Believe me I know what they say... How would you like me to do it, Y/N? Do you want me to try to be gentle, or do you want it rough?â As if you really cared; your body shuddered again and you attempted to help the friction by closing your thighs once more, ache becoming a throb. âUh uh.â His foot jammed between yours and forced your legs to widen for him, âI donât like cheaters, Y/N.â You moaned once more as those little circles got faster and rougher, âPlease, please! Krennic Iâm begging youâŠâ You whined, and your voice shook as you could feel that pleasure building, he couldnât stop now. You wouldnât let him, âDo whatever you want to me⊠just fuck me.â He nipped the top of your ear this time, âThe pleasure will be all mine.â This time as the lightning flashed it illuminated your body, and Krennic was right, your dips and curves were flawless, you looked ready for him, you felt ready for him⊠like you were made for this very moment. Krennic moved his fingertips faster - and this time he pushed his body into yours. Your gasp at his grind into you was for one obvious reason; you could feel how hard he was getting. Oh, fuck... Your body shuddered once more and you mewled, positive that you were even wetter now. He knew it too, by that chuckle. âOh? You want me donât you? I know you know how wet you are⊠You want me so fucking badâŠâ That husky whisper was driving you crazy and you knew Krennic wasnât going to let up on it, âYou feel so hot, so fuckable⊠Oh, Y/N, I canât wait to be inside you, but youâll have to wait for that.â This time your groan was a little strangled, âThatâs it, be a good girl⊠cum for me.â
If it wasnât what he was doing to you it was his voice alone that sent that shot of pleasure right through you, burning head to toe with no mercy. You cried out again, but this time it was his first name you used - and you hoped he didnât care. Panting as you felt the sweat begin to gather on your skin. Your legs shook a little but he held you strong. âGood girl.â He removed his fingertips from your clit, once again pressing a kiss to your neck, âBut, you know as well as I that this is hardly overâŠâ You rested your body against his chest for a minute, and he carded his fingers through your hair; it was almost soothing as Krennic twisted it between his fingers, âHow about we use the bed now, hmm?â
ââŠYâŠYesâŠâ You could only hazily agree, would he actually fuck you now? You were throbbing again - sure heâd said he wanted to be inside you, but did he know how much you needed him inside you? âGo on,â Krennic pushed you forward with his hand to the small of your back, you stumbled a little but didnât fall and he observed your walk, the curves of your ass - the lingering of your arousal on your thighs. âHands down.â He followed you across the floor - he was aware of how uncomfortable he felt, with heat in just the right places, and the way his pulse was running just to look at you. But he had to take this slow. The goal wasnât just to bed you, it was to erase every other man from your memory too, so that he was your one and only waking thought.
You had to admit your confusion, but placed your hands out on the sheets in front of you to support your body, Krennic made you keep your feet on the floor and for a second you wondered if this was how he was going to do it. It seemed like a waste of a good bed, but your brain was hardly running your feelings here and that throb between your legs was so desperate for something that you didnât care how you got it. Instead of hearing him shed clothing, or even just undo his zipper, Krennicâs fingers ran your spine. He really was about to commit every inch of you to memory, you werenât kidding, before he traced them over your ass. You were half expecting him to slap you, but that didnât happen either. In fact his fingers went right back to your wetness, and you shivered again; Krennicâs movements this time were less teasing as he pushed his fingers into you; you cried out - he didnât even bother with one at a time. But at least there was something dulling that ache for a second; although you knew what your body really craved. The storm illuminated everything in the room, and far more regularly than before, as his fingers pumped in and out of you. The hums he was making were satisfied, and part of you wished you could see what they looked like crossing his face. In fact the thought that you might not get to see his face almost disappointed you. But you realised something else, the colours the storm were throwing everywhere, the very sound of it - with how much you enjoyed them anyway - and Krennic here with you, was only serving to turn you on even more. And he noticed. âOh?â This sounded almost curious, âSo lightning makes you even more wet, or is that just me?â You swallowed hard, against the feeling of his fingers stretching you, you were desperate for him to get naked now. âTo⊠be honest, no-one has ever fucked me in a lightning storm.â âHuh. Maybe they should have tried, I figure theyâre missing out.â You whined again, âKrennic please⊠please⊠I canât take much more of this⊠fuck, I⊠I need you.â
You werenât sure if Krennic did it because he was listening to your plea, or if he was simply just ready to do it himself, but the next thing you knew heâd removed his fingers from you and flipped your body so you were now on your back, on the bed. And as your eyes locked with his you realised exactly what you would have been missing out on. Although serious, those eyes were so incredibly dark and lust rimmed, and hungry for your body, that you thought you might come undone again right then and there. He placed his thumb delicately against your lips for a second, tracing them, before smirking again, âOpen your mouth.â You blinked, but finding no reason not to do what he asked, your lips parted, tongue grazing his fingertip. Krennic immediately smirked, âThatâs a good girl.â Before he slid the two fingers that had just been inside you, into your mouth. You moaned gently at the sensation. âI bet you taste so good, donât you?â You could feel yourself blushing again, unsure exactly how to respond to that besides another muffled moan. He withdrew them, eyes narrowed even though he was smiling.
âAnd you do exactly what I sayâŠâ Krennic drew himself back to height, dragging his eyes down your body and as he did so he reached up to his shoulders, undoing the fastenings for his cape. Oh, you were going to get to watch Krennic undress? You moved to help him, but his eyes raised back to your face - and this time the bright white flash made those eyes of crystal blue let you know that he wanted you to stay absolutely still. âYou look ready for me darling. Are you?â You nodded, hoping that the look on your face was as pleading as you thought it was. âBorn ready for meâŠâ Krennicâs voice this time sent chills through you with how commanding it was, âMine.â You watched the cape fall to the floor and wished again for that silky texture to brush against your skin, perhaps you would ask him again later. He undid his tunic and shrugged himself out of it; Krennic wasnât exactly bothering to put on a show for you - but it still felt like one, running his hands through his hair with a breath out before he undid his shirt. Slower now, button by button as he looked into your eyes, that little teasing smile on his face only made your lips part. This man was so gorgeous. And you were here, in his quarters, in his bed. You out of the many hundreds of women on this Battle Station - and all of them beautiful - Director Orson Krennic wanted you. He threw his shirt behind him too, before settling his hands on his waistband. You studied him for just long enough, he was built more toned than chiselled, and his arms and chest were particularly defined; there was a scar on his left-hand side, just above his heart, and you wondered what the story was with that. Maybe in a quieter moment you would ask, but that was not a story for right now. You traced back to where his fingers were waiting for you to take him all in and this time you bit your lip, youâd already felt him against you but you still werenât sure you were adequately prepared⊠Undoing his zip with as much tease as his buttons Krennic let his pants and boxers fall at the same time. Your eyes widened, and you swallowed hard âOh, holy shit...â Your heartbeat picked up pace and you felt yourself clench greedily just at the sight of him. You bit your lip a little harder and raised your eyes back up Krennicâs body to his face, âI want to let you know - although it sounds like you do know - that every single one of those rumours is SO fucking true.â He smirked, âI might have started one or two of them myself.â You almost laughed, âWhy doesnât that surprise me?â He gave a shrug, âWell darling, donât we all want to project the best version of ourselves?â Krennic joined you on the bed, settling himself between your thighs again, pulling your legs around him, âNow Iâm going to prove the rest of them true, whilst also letting you in on some things you donât know.â
You had every right to moan as loud as you did as he pushed into you, feeling completely filled right away. Definitely true - part of you felt you might be smirking very broadly into your coffee in the mornings from now on. Instead of covering your body Krennic stayed in that kneeling position with your legs crossed behind him, hands gripping your thighs and nails digging into your skin. You almost wanted his nails to leave marks, for there to be bruises that lingered for more than just a few days where he gripped you - just to prove it had really happened. If this is a dream please donât ever let me wake up. He growled as you adjusted to each other, voice husky once more, âYouâre so tight.â Your sigh came out a little choked with your breathing as - at first - he moved slow, hands gilding softly over your skin as he lay his palms flat. But he still had enough pressure on you; Krennic was still in control. Right now, being in control was the last thing you were thinking of.
Those slow movements of his were a facade, but they had you already moaning - body tingling as you got used to the feelings of Krennic being inside you. You wondered if you should be trying to be quiet? How many other senior officers had rooms around Krennicâs that could potentially hear this - did Krennic even care? What if they knew it was you though? You werenât necessarily sure you wanted the reputation that might come with being Krennicâs bed mate, even if it really was only going to be tonight. As if he knew what you were thinking Krennic pushed into you a little harder, causing you to cry out a little louder than before - no point in holding back. âLet me hear you, Y/N. Let me hear those delicious little moans of yours. You can be as loud as you want here, I wonât tell anyoneâŠâ He smirked, âYou might as well let yourself - because this is going to be the best orgasm of your life, or itâs going to be nothing. I donât do half measures.â That seemed like an odd form of encouragement, but hot enough to get you mewling again. And he didnât slow his pace. Instead Krennic dug his nails back into your skin, thrusting into you harder and rougher. You arched your back up, pushing your hips into his to take him deeper and deeper. Usually you werenât so loud during sex, but with your eyes closed to the ecstasy of it all, each thrust received a moan that steadily grew louder and louder until you were pleading him: âOh, Krennic⊠Oh please, more⊠Harder, Sir, please⊠please donât stopâŠâ This was clearly only urging him on as he found another notch in his pace. You might be one for thinking this was the best sex youâd ever had as you opened your eyes to focus on him once more; Krennicâs skin was starting to get that dewy look as sweat started to build, leaving his hair to look a darker shade of grey. And that lightning⊠oh, that lightning. Watching that storm behind him made the pleasure even more intense. The backdrop was stunning to an already flawless view - what more could you possibly ask for?
His sex was deliciously rough, and it was all you could do to watch his body, the way his muscles moved with each thrust, the tension running from his shoulders, down his arms, through his fingers and the little indents from his nails you could see in your skin. You almost wanted those fingers back inside you again too. Krennic growled as that thought led to you clenching around him: âWhat are you thinking about?â You looked to his face, obviously you were already flushed, but if it were possible to turn a deeper shade of red you were now. â...PleaseâŠâ You voice wavered and you realised where this was all heading, âPlease Krennic harder⊠Please I want to- I want to- let me cum for you.â That smirk was just plain dirty, and as he placed one hand under you to raise your hips a little more his next thrust found your sweet spot. You cried out even louder - hit with a shot of pleasure more intense than any you thought youâd ever felt. âFuck-! Director-! Please!â He chuckled, âI have a first name, Y/N, you can use it.â Did he want you to use it? Did he ask everyone he took to bed to use it? You gasped again as white-hot heat shot through you head to toe and your legs locked around him, pulling him even deeper as you tipped your head back. And he knew as well as you did: âThatâs a good girl, thatâs my good girl.â Krennic continued to thrust into you until you had to squeeze your eyes shut, head tipped back you very nearly screamed his first name as your body shook and you came undone.
Your short, sharp pants didnât really have any time to become afterglow, or some slow paced âlove makingâ for him to ride into his own high. Oh no, Krennic wasnât finished with you yet - and although he lingered at a slower pace for a little - you could feel yourself building up again, heightened by the climax you had just felt. There was a mischievous glint in his eyes and you got the feeling that Krennic was not about to be termed a selfish lover. But a possessive one; your body was his, and he wasnât finished with you yet. You cried out as he took that pace up again, you could feel him getting harder inside you, every little twitch as he continued those rough thrusts. âYou ready for more?â You nodded weakly, moaning again, this would be the third time in one evening. Even if these two were in quick succession. âYes what?â The commanding tone in his voice and the way he squeezed your thighs a little harder made you shake again, âYes, Orson. Please⊠please, baby⊠I- Iâm ready.â As you said his name this time Krennic pushed his body forward so that his hands rested above your shoulders, catching your lips in a harsh kiss. Your hands immediately shot to his arms, over those toned shoulders, and your fingers tangled in his hair. This time his kisses swallowed your moans, and the higher in pitch they got the more he knew you were ready to let go again. With him all over you like this, the scent of that cologne filled your senses. Krennic thrusted into you one last time and let you cry out into his shoulder. He could probably go a little longer - but heâd build you up to that in due time, he couldnât ruin you on your first time with him. As you clenched around him, just as greedily as before, Krennic growled - hot breath in your ear as your own ecstasy became his. And now you were his too.
He let you continue to embrace him as you both panted, moving his own hands to gently caress your sides, your stomach and your thighs. Although the only sound was your breathing, and you could barely think of anything else, hands carding through his hair and watching those beautiful blue eyes focus on nothing in particular. Until the lighting strike flashed closer to you than before, causing him to look out the window. You followed his line of sight. âIt really is gorgeousâŠâ You werenât sure if that muse was supposed to come out of Krennicâs mouth, but it made you smile. âMhm⊠And I need to have sex in storms more often.â He chuckled, turning back to you and kissing your neck, softly, âWell, you know who to call.â Krennic pulled out of you gently, smirking again to see yours and his arousal lingering on your inner thighs. His. Before he lay next to you, eyes still on the storm.
You wondered what the best thing to do now was, as your high unwound. Ironically you didnât think your body had been this relaxed in a while either. Should you leave? Should you make the decision to leave him before he kicked you out himself? You wondered if that was the polite thing to do. You didnât know if Krennic was the type to really sleep with someone. When he would be at his most vulnerable. You werenât sure he would want to show that side of himself to anyone. You decided you would show willing, and would let him know that you would leave if thatâs what Krennic wanted - you werenât about to outstay your welcome. Instead, Krennic did the unexpected and, finally settling down in the sheets, he pulled you into his arms, showering you with delicate kisses and touches. Aftercare... You snuggled into his body, sighing in sleepy content and closed your eyes as he pulled the sheets further around you. Did you dare believe this was happening - No, and yet it was. You were really here, in the Directorâs arms. And he wanted you to stay. Krennic pressed a kiss to your forehead, and you could already feel yourself drifting off in his arms: âWeâll review your report in the morning.â *** When you awoke, the lights in his room were up to their brightest day setting. Krennicâs free hand was wandering over your thighs absentmindedly as he lay on his back, your datapad in his other. You tried to concentrate on that small smile on his face, those blue eyes of his, just how good he looked comfortable and relaxed, and out of uniform. You hadnât noticed the collection of freckles across his chest in the dark of the storm last night either. Suddenly you wanted this moment to last forever, no matter now impossible. This coupled with the travel of his hands, even at this time in the morning, was making you sigh blissfully.
Krennicâs eyes flicked from what he was reviewing to your face as he turned his head slowly. âThis report is good. Perfect, even. The ion storm messed with some systems last night, that canât be helped. But we should all be back online to work later. I agree with your data, consider it reviewed.â Your head tipped curiously. âSystems are down? SoâŠâ You bit your lip wickedly, âWe donât have to leave?â Krennic placed your datapad on his bedside table and rolled over, hand moving to between your thighs, he could read that mischievous little smirk of yours perfectly. âNot until much later if I have anything to say about it.â You blinked once slowly, opting to voice your single concern now, before anything got out of hand, it was a whisper that seemed so out of place. But maybe that made it the perfect time. âI donât want to be just a one-time thing.â Krennicâs eyebrows knitted for a second, before he smiled gently, other hand moving to your face, caressing your cheek with his thumb before he tangled his fingers in your hair, bringing you back to his lips. âTrust me, that was never a consideration.â

The light grey clouds rolled over the mountains on the horizon line. By the colour alone you suspected that you were due heavy snowfall. Up in a mountaintop hideaway you were growing used to such things... no bright blue sky today.
You folded your arms with a sigh; still, a little bit of sunshine would be nice. Â
KiTT - your assistance drone - beeped every so often as he moved about the room, doing the odd task. Other than that, the house was silent, for now. Your eyes hovered on the helicopter outside and then back to the clouds; would there be a chance of getting out of here for the next few days? You knew cars would be out of the question, it was treacherous even in snow fairing vehicles... Note to self: Next time choose a boyfriend whose idea of a home is not a typical villainâs hide out. Although you supposed it fit his role in all this. At least to the Agency. Things had changed a lot since Killian had tried to take everyone out with his own drones, but they were still very wary of him. You found yourself tasked with keeping him straight - you werenât sure they understood your relationship. But agreed anyway.
Having finished his tasks and now bored, KiTT whirred his way back over to you, beeping his greeting. Blue lights flashing. You shook your head at him, âWhat would you have me do? Iâve given you everything I had on my list, why donât you ask him if he needs any help?â KiTTâs next series of bleeps had you laughing; âIâm sure he didnât mean to kick you out like that. K just needs to concentrate. You can get pretty loud!â Your drone protested, which only made you giggle. Especially as he tried to make the argument that he couldnât possibly be any worse than the rest of them.Â
KiTT had a point: the drones that the Agency had let you take back now helped both you and Killian with lab work - amongst other things â and, with your own expertise in AI, each now had their own distinctive personality just as KiTT did. Sometimes you regretted that decision. Although they couldnât have been further from his blue and silver finish; in sleek black and red lights. Fitting for your significant other maybe, but it made little sense to you for the Agency to have given them such colours. (And if you were honest, KiTT looks a damn sight better, but you supposed there was a bit of favouritism in that comment.) âOh, yeah. Cuz nothing says evil robot quite like red lights.â Killian couldnât clap back at that, KiTT was exclusively blue. âI didnât design it.â âI know. Which begs the question, why the Agency was building an assassination drone.â He folded his arms, âWell they donât care, do they?â Protection by any means necessary. Stop the bad guys by any means necessary. âWell...â You raised your eyebrows and tipped your head in agreement. Heâd know a lot about that alright...Â
You found yourself looking back to the clouds and sighed, âYou could always go check the weather for me if youâre really that desperate. Or if you could figure out a really quick weather changing machine?â If you could count KiTTâs next sound as a scoff you would, before blue lights ran across his body to let you know he was contacting weather satellites for you.
The sudden crash behind you snapped you both from caring about the weather. It was followed by a slightly smaller - but still loud â one, and then silence again. You immediately started towards the labs, âOn second thought, sounds like I should have just asked you to go straight to him!âÂ
**
When you both got down there it was a little hard to tell what had happened. At first it looked like nothing too serious; work surfaces scattered with tools, screens full of science mechanics... until you spotted the broken glass beakers and liquid running across the surface of a worktop, dripping onto the floor. âK?!â He didnât appear to be in here, and yet none of his drones were either, which made you think it also hadnât been them to make this mess. Or theyâd made themselves scarce. You turned the lights up a little further and kept walking, cautiously. Well - for one thing, the floor was now covered in broken glass and curious liquids⊠they should probably be tidied up at the very least. Good thing your drone was in a working mood. There was another sound from further in the lab that made you jump, and you turned towards it. KiTT made a sound of worry. âHush, clear this away, I got it.â He beeped again, âIâll be FINE. Cybernetic, remember!?â KiTTâs next beep caused you to glare at him, âDonât use that tone with me-!âÂ
You made your way carefully over to the noise, stepping around the glass that had been spat all over the floor. You were sure itâd made its way to unknown reaches of the lab, and you should be careful where you were stepping. Sure, you wouldnât bleed, but thanks to the upgrades itâd still hurt. When you turned the corner, you came face to face with a huddled form. Your head tilted curiously; eyebrow raised. You recognised it alright: but it was more the mystery of how it got in here. It might well have been the source of the crash - after all, you wouldnât think a penguin to be very careful in a lab. You were just thinking about how you were supposed to catch it and then tell your partner: âWell, a penguin got into the house, and then your lab somehow, and destroyed all your research. Sorry about that-!â, when it turned towards you and-
âAGH-!!â This time you didnât jump, although both of you were startled. Your eyes widened even further as you stared at him, on the verge of collapsing into laughter. âK?!â The laugh wavered in your voice and you tried to swallow it back, âWhat did you do?â Killian was very blunt about it; âTurned myself into a penguin, alright. Are you happy now?â âHow?â - Trying not to laugh was having the opposite effect and he sighed. âGo on, laugh-!â You did, but still tried to make it muted, before taking a deep breath, âWhat the hell...? Did you try to copy Walterâs formula-!?â âWell, it didnât work did it-!â âThey are all pigeons; although this is appropriate for our living conditions.â You crouched beside him, â...I gotta say, itâs very cute.â âShut up!â You knew, were he still human, heâd be red with both anger and embarrassment by now. You reached out to delicately touch his feathers; it seemed, just like Sterling managed to retain the bow tie, Killian would retain the outlines of his suit. He swatted your hand away and hissed; âStop it!â âJust take the antidote. I mean, itâs all over the desk, but Iâm sure we can salvage some of it. I assume you are trying for a pigeon, right? Or maybe you arenât; gotta say I prefer penguins.â âThanks.â He responded dryly. You only grinned your âyouâre welcomeâ and then stood to walk back to his desk; even if KiTT had managed to clear everything by now, if Killian had all the data, creating another batch of antidote shouldnât take too long, and you could enjoy him as a penguin for a few minutes... or hours... more. âNo! Wait! Y/N!â He hissed again, flippers grabbing your leg. âWhat?â Killian gave you a look of significance. Your eyes narrowed; âYou took it without making an antidote!?!â âI took it accidentally!! And I had an antidote, it just wasnât perfected-! Now Iâm stuck as a flightless bird-!â âDeadly in water though.â You mused, tilting your head â that was not well received. Killian grumbled, huffing something under his breath. âSo, this isnât Walterâs formula?â âNo!â Although it didnât look like he was prepared to admit it. And you werenât sure exactly how he managed to take it âaccidentallyâ. âI did it myself!â âWell, this part worked.â You continued walking though, which made him waddle after you as fast as he could, âWHERE ARE YOU GOING!?!â âUhm, to get Walter. Heâll be able to fix this-!â âNo!!â He got ahead of you and tried to push you backwards, you halted; you supposed you understood why he wouldnât want to admit what heâd done. You thought Walter would actually love that Killianâs formula was at least correct, even if he couldnât reverse it yet. âWhat are you going to do Killian? Perfect the antidote as a Penguin? Think about this-!â âI AM!â âRationally.â You stooped again and gathered him in your arms, to which he squirmed until you set him on a clear desk. âHeâs the only one who can help you.â âI can do this myself..!â âAs a flightless bird?â Heâd been the one to say it-! He sighed, but was still unwilling to concede. Folding his flippers across his chest and turning slightly away from you. You stroked a hand over his feathers again, and grumpy as he was, you felt Killian lean into your touch and smirked as you teased him. âWe could be halfway to D.C. by now...â He turned to you, eyes narrowed, and pushed your fingers away again, gentler this time. âFine. But not a word to anyone.â âI promise.â You placed your hand over your heart. âAnd donât pick me up again. Itâs embarrassing.â You raised an eyebrow, folding your own arms, âSo... what are you going to do, waddle around after me?â âYup.â Killian jumped down from the counter, sliding across the floor to the exit, passing KiTT who beeped curiously and looked to you. You gave a shrug and rolled your eyes. âYou coming?âÂ
It didnât take very long to gather all that you needed and throw yourselves into the helicopter. You thanked your lucky stars that heâd taught you how to fly this thing. Your eyes flicked back to those clouds, âKiTT what did the weather say?â He beeped the response; cold, very cold, chance of snow later but the clouds may have been long gone by then. What concerned you most was if the chopper would fly, he seemed to suggest youâd be fine.Â
You took a deep breath and flicked all the switches to their correct positions before starting the ignition, blades whirring into life. Your penguin turned to you from his seat, where youâd firmly belted him in. âYou sure you know what youâre doing!?! You have to get us all the way to Washington D.C.!â You glared at him, âYou wanna try it in your current situation!? You taught me!!â Killian knew he had no choice but to concede. âJust be careful! Nothing reckless!â âSays the man that just turned himself into a Penguin-!â âIt was accidental-!â His voice pitched. You placed your hands assuredly on the joystick and moved the helicopter steadily into the air and into higher altitudes. âAccidental my ass, how do you take something like that accidentally-!?â There was overwhelming silence and you knew youâd won again. But sighed, saying softer, âLook, it doesnât matter...â You pulled out across the mountains and smiled at the blue sky out across your horizon line, the end of this grey was in sight-! âWalter will have you fixed into a sarcastic, Australian, pain-in-the-ass by the end of the day.â Even Killian couldnât help but laugh at that.
How exactly did you end up in this mess? Itâs probably best to go back to the beginning...
**
Shortly after the whole drone revenge plan had failed, you received an anonymous text telling you to bring a car to a building close to the Capitol Reflecting Pool and Washington Monument. It said nothing more than that, but it made you curious. Upon running it through KiTT and discovering it was from the Agency, your curiosity was only further piqued. And on the dot of the specified time, you were standing outside the building leaning against your car, shades on. To be honest you probably couldnât have looked less inconspicuous, and you wondered if the Agency, in reality, were about to laugh at you for being so gullible and arrest you too. Well, youâd escaped from them before, and that was more than just a few upgrades ago.
The doors of the building opposite slid open and your mouth was suddenly agape, you slid your shades slowly from your eyes, unable to hide your shock. Stepping into daylight - in a brand-new suit - was none other than Killian himself.Â
His smile was gentle as he made his way down the steps to you, and your heart was hammering against your ribs. As Killian stopped in front of you, you couldnât help yourself but throw your arms around him. âAm- am- am I here to pick you up!?â God I missed you, I missed you, I missed you⊠He chucked, returning your embrace, âI believe thatâs the idea, yeah.â âThey just let you go!?â Killian placed his right hand in his pocket and huffed, âWell. Thatâs not exactly it, I had to bargain my way out...â You surveyed him for a minute, all his cybernetics seemed intact; he didnât look messed with. Running a full diagnostic would give you the whole picture, but you were puzzled. âWhatâs the price?â âJoining the good guys.â You pulled slightly back, âYouâre working for the Agency!?â He gave a nod, âThatâs the deal.â âDouble cross all your acquaintances?â You smiled, leaning back against the car, âDoes kinda sound like you... Oh. Wow. Youâre an informant?â âNot exactly.â Your eyes widened further than you felt possible; âYouâre an agent!?â âYou got it.â But Killianâs smile slightly faded, âY/N, I- I was only part of the bargain, though.â You understood him immediately, âMe? They want me.â âYouâre an inspired scientist; your expertise in the fusion of human biology and robotics⊠not to mention AI- they can use that. Itâs not really even me they want working with them, itâs you.â âYou offered me up as a chip!?â You couldnât help but be a little upset at him for that. âYouâre the only chip I had to play!â Even by the desperate look on his face you shook your head, âNo.â âI need you with me on this, you think I was gonna do it without you?â His hand reached for yours, and you didnât pull away. âSo, are we... a team?â âWell, about thatâ-â His eyes flicked over his shoulder and you both turned.
Standing in the doorway now - each with a wildly different expression on their face - were Walter, Lance and... you believed her name was Marcy. Your eyes flicked to his face and back to them. Walter was the only one that seemed to show any kind of joy; and he was ecstatic. You pushed back just about every swear word you could think of. âYouâre kidding me?â
**
He was not, in fact, kidding and after being hauled into a two-hour meeting - which you felt really explained nothing - you were essentially handed a file and an ultimatum. Either you worked with them, or you were thrown in a maximum-security prison. You had to laugh, because you didnât think this was exactly fair on you. And they had you between a rock and a hard place... Killian and you had always had the same vendetta against the Agency since Kyrgyzstan (maybe his a little more aggressive than yours), and you had a life outside all of this. You couldnât afford not to take their offer. The Agency knew it.
That made you a lot less mad at him for signing you up, and you turned down the opportunity to vent to him on the drive back; âWhat do I call you now? Agent McFord!?â âShut up!â The faint blush across his face made you smile and tease him again: âYou do know all that James Bond stuff was a joke, right-!?â
It was one of your favourites. The two of you loved spy movies, unironically. And Killian really liked the classic Bond films, how any time heâd make himself a certain drink youâd come for him with the same joke: âIs that a martini!?â âYes-??â He was always curious as to why that mattered, only for you to give a pointed smirk, âAlright... James Bond!â And he laughed, hard. And you loved that sound, because it was such a rarity these days, âSurely in this situation Sterling is James Bond...?â Then you smirked again, and gave Killian your best flirty wink, âNot to me!â That seemed to always get you where you wanted. And wasnât 007 known for his way with the ladies, after all?
Today in your car Killian did not raise to the bait, but you saw him shake his head as he stared out the window. âSo, are you going by Tristan or KillianâŠ?â There was a little smile on his face as he continued to stare at the scenery, âIâll leave that up to youâŠâ Your sudden gasp had him looking back to you as something else gelled in your brain; âWait does that mean I get to say Iâm dating a secret agent!?â âOh god.â His groan was quiet and you were already grinning, enjoying yourself even more. âYou should never have agreed to this!â âClearly.â âWaitâ!â You turned to him in absolute joy, âCan you just put on a British accent for like five minutes-!?â âNO!â And you noticed how he managed to accent his Australian to new levels. Clearly his childhood wish to be James Bond was getting fulfilled, but he wasnât about to play into it for your whims...
Youâd figure out how to break that will before long-!
**
It took Killian a little more time than he would have liked to convince you that his deal was a good one. You were basically flat out refusing to work for them, doing the bare minimum you possibly could get away with; it felt too much like coercion to you, and they must have known how much you stood to lose.
His first track was to use Walter; with both similar approaches to science & technology and similar levels of enthusiasm for it, the work it would be possible for you to do together would be nothing short of incredible, and both of you knew it. You acknowledged Killian was right, but it wasnât something you fell for. The files Killian gave you, the access to read about the technology... that interested you. The potential to further yourself in your own field, even if it had to be done with the Agency, was a good draw. But still not enough.
So Killian did the one thing he could, and played the last card he had left. Himself. Baiting you with his own fate. âIf they say Iâm not doing my job and throw me back where I came from, what then?â You hated him for it, hated even more that he had a point. Hated yourself for having to admit you couldnât be without him. Youâd almost gone stir crazy between his arrest and picking him up. You couldnât stand to think of it being any longer than that. Too much of a pain point, your one line. Youâd both lost enough; you refused to let yourselves lose each other.
You did not become an agent though. Your role was strictly technology and it confined you to the labs. Which you had to be honest, you enjoyed. And because you had your own job â and were a name the industry knew well â you werenât a full time Agency employee. Your research saved lives â was the reason you still had yours â the Agency couldnât exactly stop you working on good conscience. Even better! The tension in the team didnât really let up, but the combination of the four of you (and Marcy and co when necessary) worked well. You all got more done than any other team in the Agency.Â
Still, the enjoyment of working alone, or with Walter, didnât stop you from itching to get out there or complaining about it to Killian. âOh. I see Iâm not an agent.â âLess expendable than I.â âOut of me and you, how am I-â âYou have a reputation beyond the Agency and they know it. Youâre the poster child of cybernetics. They did it to save your brain; didnât you tell me that yourself?â âYou made this...â You indicated to the parts of your body that were, indeed, cybernetic. âYes, I did.â He touched his forehead to yours, âbut the top half of you is flesh and blood and I do not possess the brain you do. For now, youâre best staying in the lab.â Walter didnât stay in the lab and it made you antsy; running around with Killian or getting to do stuff for him was half the fun.
And eventually you whined enough to get to accompany him on missions, even though you still didnât get to be an agent.
You had a few style tips for your 007 too. In the same vein as Lance Sterling, Killianâs crisp new Agency suit was complete with bow tie and dazzlingly white shirt. You couldnât help yourself, looking him over. Oh, sure, Killian looked great, but he didnât look like him. As you strolled over, Killian stood still and as tall as possible: his obvious thought was that you weâre going to straighten his bow tie. Not a chance! Instead, you unfurled it and threw the fabric to one side, proceeding to undo one... two... you hovered over the third button. Killian placed his hand over yours, âIsnât that enough?â He should have known that was a fatal mistake to say; âFor me? No!â You took a step back with a smile, at the creased eyebrow and small frown look on his face, surveying your handy work: âMmm. Thatâs more you. Agent McFord.â And so this was how he started to wear his suits, and before long that signature blue shirt found its way back into the mix, much to your delight.
It was on these missions together that you both became curious in Walterâs biomolecular tech. You from a purely scientific fascination. He had Sterling turning from man to pigeon left, right and centre. And the two of you had drones (now equipped with AI), but even you didnât have anything like that. Clearly Killianâs interest had become a little more than just the spectacle and scientific theory though.
No, clearly heâd tried to replicate it for himself. And the result hasnât exactly gone as planned. You supposed he wasnât about to allow Lance to one up him for the rest of his Agency career - however long that lasted. And Killian wanted to get back on level footing without Walters help; he wanted to do it himself.
And it had worked, a very valiant attempt, but he hadnât finished his antidote or had miscalculated somewhere... And that was how you had all ended up in a helicopter flying yourself to the Agency labs, with a penguin in the passenger seat.
Yet with what youâd seen working here, this just seemed like a typical day!
***
You landed to the best of your ability, ignoring his slight glare of annoyance at the small bump as you set the helicopter down. You would call that trip a success. You stared at the heavy doors in front of you and gathered your pass; you heard KiTT behind you and his metallic fussing as he switched himself into all the correct safety modes and access clearances for the Agency. That you had done yourself; you didnât trust Killian with KiTT, did they really think they would get the go ahead to touch him? Turning to Killian you cleared your throat; âYou gotta act like a penguin remember-! So donât talk to me! Or do anything a penguin wouldnât do!â âWhat wouldnât a penguin do!?â You unclipped his seatbelt. Well, you supposed a researcher would know, or someone that worked with them closely in a zoo. But he couldnât just guess the Agencyâs experience. Then again, it wouldnât surprise you if he knew everyone in it inside out by now. âLook, I donât know. But donât make me talk to you, Iâm going to look like an insane person-!â Realising that you were both still talking to each other you shared the same âshut up!â look before agreeing not to talk with a silent nod, and with both KiTT and penguin Killian trailing you, you headed across the helipad with your Agency pass.Â
Here we go again...
God, you hated this building. Most times youâd been out here it hadnât been for any good reason - and you still didnât feel particularly safe within it. And so many people⊠Even when you worked your legitimate job you usually worked alone - or with people you actually liked - you could talk to yourself or KiTT and run your mouth, or talk things through without anyone answering you. Everyone at the Agency had an opinion. When it was just you and Walter it was okay, and Killian was right, you liked him. But sometimes other people got involved and it got messy. To the point where Walter would gingerly steer you from the room before you really went off at someone.
You keyed yourself in; immediately scanned by the Agencyâs automatic sensors, the switch turned green and the door swung open for you. You hesitated for a moment and looked down to Killian. âI know youâre gonna hate this, but Iâm going to have to carry you through security. I think thatâs all there is for it.â You didnât let him answer as you picked him up but, as before, Killian protested by squirming in your arms as you walked down the hall to the security area. âGeez, now I look like Iâm smuggling in a penguinâŠâ
You gained some funny looks for doing so, but you need only say the word research and they let you through with him. As you turned into the next corridor, through the next security door and it all looked empty, Killian nipped at your fingers; âOW! Okay⊠Geez-!â You put him back on the ground, only for him to shake out his ruffled feathers with a âhumph!â The corridors remained silent as you took the long way down to the research centre. And Killian switched from waddling to sliding around on his stomach. You watched with curiosity; you supposed that was faster for him than trying to keep up with you. You turned to KiTT with a raised eyebrow, only to see him also focused with puzzlement on the penguin. Knowing you werenât about to get anything sensible out of your drone, you spoke once again to your boyfriend: âIs that easier to move, or is it just fun?â Killian barely glanced up at you, but you knew the look he was giving: âyouâre the one that said donât talk!â He was right, but this corridor was empty, the last 10 corridors had been empty! âGeez you can just nod.â You were met with nearly exactly the same look, before he paused, nodded, and carried on his sliding.  âItâs fun? You are too cute.â
It took you until the next door for him to stand up and retaliate, but when Killian did, he smacked your leg as best he could with his flipper; you could only laugh.
***
You wandered cautiously through the laboratory and he stayed close; perhaps you should have checked that Walter was actually in today. You could already hear the stirring of whispers, and KiTT beeped in acknowledgement. You glanced to him, âTell them to shut the hell up then!â His beep was a little louder in annoyance, and you rolled your eyes, but he began flying ominously over the heads of the other scientists and chatter stopped, work resumed. You smiled to yourself; everyone was scared of KiTT because of what they knew Killianâs drones had been capable of. KiTT was harmless, and had no weaponry, but they didnât need to know that. You quite enjoyed how scared they got sometimes. Served them right for the majority of it. You were a little overcome with joy to see that Walter was indeed in his lab, and even more happy to see that Lance was nowhere to be found. You gave him a wave as you knocked on his door and received a big smile back. âY/N! I didnât know you were coming in today!â âUnplanned, I do confess. But itâs good to see you Walter!â âWell, itâs lovely to see you too! You working?â âActually I came to ask a favourâŠâ âOh!â He straightened in his chair as he swung it towards you, large blue eyes curious, âWhat is it?â âYour bio-molecular technology?â âYes.â It was at this point he noticed the penguin, and you could see the million questions racing in his mind, so you opted to continue quick before he got a chance to ask them. âIs that just for Lance? Would it work on anyone? You must have the formula, right? Is there any chance I can take a look? Both for the transformation process and the antidote to it. I mean you guys are using it all the time.â âUuuhhhhâŠâ Now youâd given Walter a million questions, and his eyes kept flicking downwards to your companion. âWell, IâŠYes, I guess I couldâŠ. show you how to⊠Do you want to do this with a penguin?â âIgnore the penguin.âÂ
Walter tried to keep his eyes on you, especially as the look you were giving him was serious, but eventually they trailed back to the bird at your feet. He studied it for a while and ignored you trying to protest him disregarding what youâd said. He leant forward on his chair, âKillian?â Instead of acting as he was supposed to, your partner became immediately angry. âNot a WORD to Sterling, or I SWEAR-!!â Instead, Walter lit up with a gasp, âYou perfected your own formula!?! Thatâs so amazingâ!! Colour me impressed-! Well, I could make what I made for him, so you can turn pretty much at will-!! Well-â He turned to you with a smile, âwith some assistance of course-!â âA secret agent penguin!â The idea was funny to you, but at the same time you couldnât help but love it. Killian immediately protested, âNO-! THATS STUPID, WE ARE NOTâ!â You nudged him with your foot to shut him up, before continuing a sensible track of conversation, âFirst off, I suppose we should get the formula done. Then we can think about what we want to do with it afterward.â âAll you need is the antidote right? I can get right on that⊠but, Killian, Iâm going to need your help with what you didâŠâ Walter spun back to the computer and began typing away, âPull up a seat you two!â You dragged one across, and Killian scrambled up onto your lap; âI donât have my formula, but KiTT could probably download it. He has a satellite uplink to the lab back home.â Walter nodded, âThatâll do, Iâll have to make sure the antidote coincides⊠I canât promise this will be short though, you might be stuck like that for a few more hours.â âHours!?â Killian sounded exasperated but turned to your assistance drone: âKiTT, see if you can link back to the lab and access file F-BMP5. Then send it across to Walter.â KiTT, glad of something to do, bleeped happily and set to work. âSorry buddy.â Walter replied softly, âA penguin though, Iâm impressed.â âNot entirely easy to find birds where we live.â This caused you to chime in, âGenuinely there are penguins up there?â âIf you know where to look.â âHuh!â You smiled gently, âYouâll have to show me!â
Walter worked as quickly and carefully as possible, and as you suspected people were fascinated. Everyone who passed couldnât resist knocking on the door and asking what a penguin was doing here. Some even having the nerve to ask, âIs that penguin talking?â By the time the last one had enquired you were up by the door: âNO!â and slamming it back in their face. Walter took precautions to lock you all in here and frost the glass for privacy after that.Â
Killian remained in your lap, and you held him close, stroking your fingers through his feathers again, this time he didnât seem to mind too much, and at times when you paused, he would nuzzle against your hands to get you to continue. Though you knew he would never admit it. As he continued working on the antidote, Walter again brought up the possibility of using this ultimate spy tech regularly. Killian didnât seem keen, but you wondered if you could get him to warm to the idea⊠âIâm sure that we could find a little suit jacket for you in that form.â He glared back at you, âYouâre enjoying this a little too much, arenât you?â âA little, yeah!â You grinned in admittance, making him turn to Walter. âItâs a hard no from me.â âAw, Killian, câmon!â That only made Walter chuckle, âLet him get used to it Y/N, heâll like it eventually, Lance did.â âYou mean just leave him like this for a while?â Walter grinned, âSomething like that!â Killian spluttered, stamping his foot against your leg; âYOU TWO PUT ME BACK RIGHT NOW!â
When Walter had the serum made up, he walked you both into another lab to perform the procedure. Killian let you carry him. âYou can drink it if you want, but Iâd like to run a few tests.â âMeaning what?â âI mean, if I put you under anaesthetic⊠I can check a few things.â âIs that usual?â âNo but itâs your first time, and Lanceâs wasnât a pleasant experience I just want to make sure youâre okay, or Y/N will kill me.â Killian narrowed his eyes at both of you, standing there trying to look so innocent. âFine. If I wake up and Iâm not human again, Iâm going to kill both of you.â Walter winced, however you only smirked; âNoted!â
***
When Killian awoke again, he was indeed human. But he was not in a lab in Washington D.C. instead he was in bed, back in the mountain top hideout. Had he really been out that long? Or was whatever drug used in the anaesthetic or antidote so strong he simply couldnât remember anything else. He stretched, glad his head wasnât spinning, and walked into the bathroom. Skimming his fingers up the side of his neck he pressed down on the projection switch. Killian checked this every morning as routine; that the system worked, that there were no problems with the metal, or his eye. This morning, nothing worked. He straightened up with a frown and tried again. Nothing. Killian rushed through the house; âY/N! Y/N!â He sounded panicked, making you shake your head and call him through. âIn the main room, babe.â He ran the rest of the way, âY/N, my projection isnât working!â You turned to him slowly, crooked, amused smile on your face; as if you were trying to hold back a laugh. âAre you sure? Why donât you check again?â This time Killian was more careful, fingers sliding up his neck tentatively. He paused, realising that he couldnât even feel the switch. It no longer existed. His eyes flew wide, voice quiet; âYou- you- fixed it!â You grinned, smile slowly spreading across your face as you nodded, âYes! So now you have a complete face!â He sprinted the rest of the way to you, grabbing you into a hug. You couldnât help laughing, throwing your arms around him too as Killian buried his face in his shoulder, âYou can cry now too! But please donât! I would feel terrible!â âHow-!?â âTurns out I can pick up a thing or two⊠Called in a few favours...â He pulled back and you framed his face with your hands, stroking your thumbs over his cheeks, âThe Agency have better tech, but I never admitted that out loud. Iâve been wanting to do it for a little while but⊠Walter finally gave me the opportunity.â â...Thank you.â âOh, donât you start.â You indicated to yourself, âI have far more to thank you for.â You gestured to his robotic arm, âI thought⊠maybe Iâd leave that. That was a feat of engineering yâknow?â He laughed, âOne thing at a time, huh?â âYes!â You agreed with a nod.
Killian tugged away from you for a moment, and studied your clothes. He was in luck; they were the ones you had been wearing at the labs. Although, as he glanced to the colour of the sky perhaps it wasnât the morning after all, perhaps it was later in the same day. It was snowing, though, so that weather prediction had been correct. Killian couldnât be sure when it was exactly, but it was imperative you were wearing these clothes. âI just need to do something.â You were confused as he got closer to you. âWhat?â âDonât get too excited.â He ran his hand down your body to the pocket of your jeans. âI mean, I canât help get excited, youâre here and touching me.â âStop it.â Although Killian smirked, slipping his hand into your pocket. You stilled, and your features pulled into a highly suggestive look as your eyes scanned his; âI mean, I have questions, Agent McFord.â He rolled his eyes at you as he fished a small disk drive out of your pocket. ââŠWait!â You gasped, moment broken, âWhat the hell is that!? Where did you get that!?â You patted yourself down suddenly, âKillian-!â He closed his hand around it and beckoned you with him, turning to walk back to the labs, you hurried after him, âNo one was paying much attention to the Penguin, were they!â âWait! Seriously! What is that?â âShush, youâll see.â He plugged it into his computer and you waited patiently for it to boot up before you found yourself gasping again; âIs that⊠The Agencyâs entire weapons tech!?â âYup.â You whipped around to him, hands on his desk, âARE YOU DOUBLE CROSSING THE AGENCY!â âKinda.â His face was fairly nonchalant as his eyes held yours again. âKillian!â You couldnât believe this was happening. After all that talk, and trying to persuade you into this. âAfter what they did...â He transposed the files, âare you really THAT surprised?â You folded your arms, hating that he had a point, â...Well no. But I... thought you might be a little more discreet.â âWhat they donât know wonât hurt them - besides a few months ago you were telling me I was double crossing all the people I worked with, so is it double crossing a double cross or is it simply that Iâm an effective double agent?â â... Thatâs a lot of doubles.â âMm.â âI figure thatâs not what the programme and agreement of your release was for. K, if they find outâŠâ He tipped his head, eyes very nearly pleading with you. âIâm not covering for you!â âAccomplice?â âNot in your wildest dreams!â You were grinning - but maybe grimacing, because you thought perhaps youâd get caught up in this too, being part of his damn agreement - and Killian already knew heâd got away with it. You were going to be there for him no matter what he did and no matter what happened, youâd made that promise too long ago and youâd never break it. Not after what youâd been through together. You folded your arms again, âI wonât rat on one condition.â His eyes rolled, âWhat could that be?â âIf youâll agree to use Walterâs biomolecular tech, penguin yourself on missions in the same way Lance does his pigeon transformation.â Killian scoffed, âHow?!â You were sure he wished he didnât ask as you produced a collection of vials from a table across the lab. Killianâs face fell slightly. âYou did not.â âOh, we did!â âThatâs most certainly punishment.â You indicated to the screen, âSomeone brought this upon himself.â
There was silence, before he began chuckling, pulling you into his arms gently - and you were only too happy to accept his hug and a kiss to your forehead. âGeez. The things I do for you!â You moved to catch his lips delicately in âthanksâ. Oh yeah, like you couldnât say the same thing!
