Is anyone else noticing that link building feels completely different now?
A couple of years ago, I was obsessed with metrics. DR, referring domains, link count… basically anything that looked good in a report.
Now I’m finding that relevance and actual brand mentions seem to matter a lot more.
One thing that changed my perspective was working with SERPsGrowth on an outreach campaign. I kept asking why they were skipping some really high-DR websites, and the answer was pretty simple: our audience wasn’t there.
At first I thought we were leaving opportunities on the table.
A few months later, I realized those niche placements were sending better referral traffic and even showing up in places I wasn’t expecting when testing AI search tools.
I’m still learning, but I’ve stopped treating link building like a numbers game. I’d rather have a handful of links from sites people in my industry actually read than dozens from random publications that look impressive on paper.
Curious if anyone else has changed the way they evaluate links over the last year.
