Finished the critique for @gloriafrimpong and it went really well!
“I loved it. It was quick, informative, and had a lot of valuable advice. It confirmed things I was concerned about and brought attention to issues I wouldn’t have noticed, since I can’t look at my own writing with fresh eyes.“
I have a free queue so if you’re interested in a critique you can find more details here, or sign up here.
Please reblog <3
Introduction to my blog

Why, hello there
I’m your new editor, it’s nice to meet you! My name is Dee (they/she), and I am a college student majoring in English Writing and minoring in Astronomy. I am a trained tutor for my college’s Research and Writing Center, which I am leaving unnamed for privacy reasons.
What is this blog about? I started this blog because I love reading—especially when it’s free!—and I love editing. There is nothing more fulfilling to me than helping writers mold their work into its best form.
What kind of editing? While I can do other types of editing, I specialize in beta reading and copy editing, as defined below.
Beta Reading This type of editing gives feedback from a reader’s perspective. The author will get comments on how the story comes across to its readers, as well as technical comments on the pacing, plot, and coherence of the story as a whole.
Copy Editing The kind of editing most people expect from an editor. Copy editing checks for spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes—sentence level editing that corrects errors while simultaneously keeping the author’s style. Copy editors also fact check, which I am more than happy to do, but I will only do this by request.
What I will edit:
fanfiction
original works
short stories
novelettes/novellas/novels
experimental writing
essays
academic writing
What I will not edit:
sexually explicit scenes
explicit/extreme violence against women, BIPOC, or the LGBTQIA+ community
incest
rape/non-consensual
fanfiction about real people (e.g. kpop idols, actors)
I prefer reading fantasy and sci-fi, but I am willing to read pretty much anything. I am an avid novel reader, but I am also familiar with comics and TV shows, both American and East Asian.
DISCLAIMER: There are some topics (e.g. abuse) that I will not be able to help with when it comes to research and accuracy. I am not an expert in that field and I have zero personal experience. I am not a professional, so do not expect professional results. I can and will refuse to work with any piece for any reason, including personal reasons, discomfort, if I am already working with too many pieces, etc.
I created this blog for the love of reading and editing. I want to encourage all writers to participate in the wonderful craft of storytelling, no matter what your level of experience is.
That being said, if I have helped you, I would love for you to give my blog a shout out in your published work! Exposure is the best way for me to reach and help more writers.
Please message me if you are interested in my services! :)
“Extraneous baggage”—that was how Albert Erskine, line editor of Cormac McCarthy’s Suttree, described slow sections of the submitted manuscript. McCarthy listened. He spent months revising and cond…
Line editors are often mistaken for copyeditors. Copyeditors tend to polish and perfect work at a later stage, but the confusion is telling. George Witte, editor-in-chief at St. Martin’s Press, has said “many copyeditors do the work that line editors should have done.” Often copyediting is done from a distance, but as with Erskine and Ellison, Gottlieb and Heller, line editors have a direct relationship with the writer. They are a book’s “ideal reader,” according to Witte, and because they have often been the writer’s acquiring editor, are also the writer’s “source of money, the point of contact, the guide through the publishing process, the cheerleader, the writer’s advocate, the person to cry to, or, perhaps, to complain about, the lunch or drinks companion, sometimes the friend, and above all the most attentive and most honest reader of an author’s work.”
Line editors tighten sentences when tension and clarity is missing, but they also give sentences breath when constrained. Beyond removing clichés, they excise a writer’s pet words and mannered constructions. Line editors help sentences build into paragraphs, and paragraphs flow into pages. They keep a writer’s eye and ear connected. A line-editor allergic to praise—who wields only a hammer—can break more than a manuscript. Worse yet, they can break a spirit.

Working with an Editor: Part 2
Working with an Editor: Part 2
Technical Writing a book is something that takes time, money, and effort, but the end result makes it all worth it. You’ve probably had moments where you’ve just stared at your screen or banged your head against your desk, searching for ideas that wouldn’t come. You’ve probably had days where you didn’t feel good enough and days where the words flowed easily. You’ve probably even had days where…
