âHey, James?â
James looks up from his Transfiguration essay, finally. Thereâs ink all over his fingertips, and he discreetly wipes it on his crimson coverlet. No one will notice the stain, probably, or care about it.
âYeah, Evans?â
Lily glances out of the window bordering Remusâs bed - sunlight streams through the translucent curtains that Sirius doesnât see the point of, and forms a halo curving across her crimson hair and curious eyes. And itâs fitting, in a sense, because she certainly looks a bit like an angel, with her hair tumbling down her back and her slightly parted lips and her raised eyebrow and fuck, James is a goner for her again, and again, and again.
âCan we, like, skive off Defense?â James lifts a surprised eyebrow at this, and leans against the base of his four-poster bed.
âIâm intrigued,â he says slowly. âWhat convinced you to - ah, turn over a new leaf, Miss Head Girl?â Lily slightly crimsons as that, and itâs disproportionately adorable.
âWell, look at it!â She gestures at the window excitedly, and reaches over to yank at the curtains. âThe weather is fucking brilliant today!â
âThatâs never stopped you before.â James is chuckling now.
âCome it off, Potter. Itâs our last year here, live a little.â It takes Lily a moment to realize that maybe she shouldnât have said that to James Potter, self-proclaimed âMarauder extraordinaireâ (his words, not Lilyâs). He springs to his feet, and smirks down at Lily, eyes twinkling.
âI think I should be the one telling you that, Evans.â With that, he tilts his head towards the stairway. Before Lily can follow, though, heâs already bounded down the stairs (and judging by the muffled thud and the yelp, heâs tripped on his way down). Lily canât help but smile at this lovable idiot - her lovable idiot - as she grabs her bag and makes her way down to the common room.Â
She never quite gets a good look at James as she heads off to - well, wherever James is going; instead, she catches glimpses of haphazard raven hair and a worn brown rucksack, hears the swish of robes and the sound of his Converses against the floors. Itâs enough to go by, though; this is how James always is, fast and energetic and clumsy and never in one place for too long.
(Maybe thatâs why it took her six years to fall for him. And maybe thatâs why she ended up falling for him, in the end).
Lily finally sees James when he exits the Charms hallway and heads outside. Thatâs where heâs headed, Lily can see it now. The Black Lake is anything but black now, save for the occasional flash of the Giant Squidâs tentacles, and the water looks awfully welcoming. On a hunch, Lily leaves her thick cloak and bag by the archway, and untucks her white button-down as she makes her way to James. The prefect and Head Girl in her protests - it always does.
Live a little, she thinks to herself as she perches herself besides James, on the edge of the lake. James is running the fingers of his right hand across the surface of the lake, causing ripples to radiate from his fingertips, and after a moment, Lily delicately places her own right hand on Jamesâs left. The ripples stop.
James turns around and looks over at Lily, and a stupid little grin spreads across his face. Without thinking about it, she leans into his side and nestles herself in the curve of his torso. And yes, itâs already a warm spring afternoon, but the extra heat isnât out of place here. She feels James lean ever-so-slightly into her too, resting his head gently on top of hers, and sighs imperceptibly.
Itâs a beautiful afternoon, she thinks.
Then, damn him, he flicks his right wrist up. Droplets of water hit her face, and she instinctively brings up her hands. âOi!â she yelps, recoiling. James laughs, and Lily crosses her arms combatively.
Sure, the cool water of the lake actually felt quite nice, but thatâs besides the point.
A second later, Lily plunges both her hands into the lake, and splashes James with a handful of water. James doesnât cry out, but his eyebrows fly into his hairline.
Well, shit.
He rises suddenly, pulls Lily up with him, and as if she weighs as much as a feather, tosses her over his shoulder.
âPotter!â she shrieks, kicking his back furiously but lightly. âPut me down!â He laughs again, and wades deeper into the lake. Lily knows whatâs going to happen a second before it does, and braces herself.Â
He lets go of her, and she tumbles unceremoniously into the water. Itâs shocking at first, and she pushes herself to the surface and sputters for breath, but after a second, it isnât particularly unpleasant. Lily inhales deeply, and plunges into the depths of the lake again. Where is he, where is he - there.
She grabs ahold of his (far-too toned) legs and pulls as hard as she can. Caught off guard, James overbalances, and stumbles down into the water, yelling profanity as he goes. Lily watches him flail for a moment, laughing, before he comes up to breathe. The two are standing now, and James is gasping for breath.
âFuck, Evans!â She laughs harder.
âDonât tell me you didnât deserve it.â
James pauses for a moment. âTrue,â he grudgingly admits.
Lily looks away from James and behind him, at the castle. âWhat time dâya reckon Charms starts?â
James shrugs, a slow grin spreading across his face. âDo we have to?â he says, almost whiningly.
Reaching up on her tiptoes, Lilyâs lips find Jamesâs momentarily, and James relaxes against her. And oh, thereâs something perfect about the sun against their waterlogged uniforms, the wind in their hair, and the two together. It almost pains her to do it, but Lily pulls back.
âNo,â she says. âWe donât.â And with the water at their knees and their lips against each otherâs again, it really is a perfect moment, one that seems to last an eternity.
