Can we pretty please go back to making it clear what field weāre coming from before we discuss concepts?
If I read one more (unnecessary!) fight about how mental health disorders are or arenāt part of neurodivergence, Iāll start chewing furniture!
This is just personal experience: but guys ā for me, most confusion about neurodiversity/neurodivergence as a topic arose from how we often still donāt clearly separate terms like āneurodiverseā and āneurodivergentā. Not even within the community. Or when it wasnāt clear where the reasoning was based (socially/medically). For me, thatās exactly where things (still) get tricky.
Like, for example, the discussion (at least in German-speaking countries?) about whether ADHD is a developmental disorder or part of natural neurodiversity. In theory, I get why both are considered true. In practice, I personally take issue with the term ādisorderā too. But less when itās used in an only medical context to describe why symptoms significantly impair a personās overall quality of life. With that, weāre back to how ābeing disabledā and āidentifying as disabledā can be two quite different things, even among ADHDers. And why ānot personally using the term disabledā doesnāt mean that ADHD itself isnāt a disability. But I understand that this is a highly sensitive issue, above all where diagnosis and care depend even stronger on this.
My only point is: letās start by asking again whether we really disagree before pointing fingers at each other. #cantdothisanymore #stillinagoodmoodwritingthis #really #idontbite
