This is a genuine question: how do you write about characters being pieces of shit without being bigots as well? How is that possible. Or at the very least how do you go about doing that? Because it's difficult for me to achieve that myself.
it's a little hard to explain, but to me there's a very big difference between 'i'm doing this because of you' and 'i'm doing this because of people like you'. generally as long as the motivating factors are so deeply personal they couldn't possibly apply to a larger group, you kinda manage to escape the inherent bigotry of, say, a male character forcing a female character into the submissive barefoot housewife role against her will. if the logic behind their atrocities is so incredibly focused on one specific person they would ever so much as try to apply to anyone else, it's less of a prejudice and more of deeply problematic fetish. which still isn't great but we work with what we've got.
